Very informative.

Clear and effective.

As a teacher, I appreciate the "common sense" approach that Dr. Giler advocates in her book. I only wish this user friendly book was available when I first began teaching. Dr. Giler addresses the types of teasing which these children must endure. She also discusses the meaning of tone and its significance in others' feeling so that these youngsters can best assimilate into the culture of youth. These issues, so important to a normal and healthy childhood have never been addressed. I hope that Dr. Giler continues to work on these rarely discussed social interactions. Julie A. Hanks, Ph.D.

I am in my late 50s. I had tried to become vegan several times in the past, because of my love for animals. I was just never able to do it.This book got me over the hump. I am now a very happy fledgling vegan. I feel no deprivation whatsoever. My desire for animal foods is fading FAST. The book helped me realize that there are great-tasting vegan versions of practically anything. And if feels so good to be finally living consistent with my convictions.The book is extremely informative as well as inspirational. It's worth the price just to learn about the incredible array of vegan resources that are available out there.The authors mention that one of the things people most regret on their deathbeds is not living in accordance with their true selves - going along with the culture or family or church or whatever, when their real selves want to go in a different direction. That point really hit me. I realized that in my heart of hearts I am a vegan. Maybe you are, too. This book can certainly help you find out.

I bought the book to learn more about the choice to be vegan. While I'm not ready to make that jump just yet, the book was a eye opener on so many levels. It's not simply a list of reasons to be vegan, it offers a comprehensive summary of the ways in which the use of animals and animal products in our foods and our clothing impacts the environment. While I expected that but still found it fascinating, a pleasant surprise was the wealth of nutritional knowledge included. Learning about how my specific food choices directlyaffect my body was terrific. From which foods will lower blood pressure to the choices that will make me generally feel better, I gained so much information that has already informed my choices. Plus, the recipes are spectacular -- easy to make and delicious. As they say in the book, people often love vegan dishes as long as they don't know they're vegan. I've already made a soup that got rave reviews and found a cheese substitute in nutritional yeast that made my palate and my arteries happier. I read the book completely, even the recipes and found it more than satisfying. If you are looking for a great resource about healthier eating, even if you aren't going vegan just yet or ever, this book will more than do the job for you.

Very good if you are over 50 and have decided to adopt a whole foods, plant-based diet. I found some good information about the benefits of changing my lifestyle even at my advanced age (well over 50). It's even good if you are see-sawing about making the commitment. I have been vegan for just a month now and already feel much better, smile more and move a little faster. This book covers just about every concern you might have about making the change.

This is the book that made me commit to veganism after 40 years of flirting with it. I've been a vegetarian, and mostly "vegan-ish" since I was 18, but it's taken me all that time to actually let go of some of my craves, like dairy and conventional baked goods.I loved the entire book, but one feature I especially enjoyed was 'Our Vegan Lives' when Ginny, Carol and Patti answered specific questions like: 'What's in our fridges', 'What's in our vegan homes', 'Tips that helped us become vegan', etc. This book is the one written for my generation with solid evidence-based science, as well as the personal touch. It's a masterpiece!

I really enjoyed this book, and it's one I will keep for reference and reading pleasure. Many vegan resources are aimed at young-ish girls because they seem to be the demographic most likely to become vegan--that's too bad, because people open up to new ideas when they see people just like themselves in it, when they can imagine they will belong. This book offers a chorus of welcoming voices. In addition to the authors, many contributors tell of their journey to veganism and how they are living as vegans. This book is full of useful information: the health and nutritional information are top-notch, there are many great recipes and ideas for quick and easy meals, advice for community, managing family and social situations, work and travel, and a sensitive discussion of care giving and assisted living considerations. Highly recommended!

I am participating in the Eat to Live diet and have been off milk products (except for cheese) for almost a year now. I am 55 and I feel better when not eating animal products. After reading this book I have a better idea on how to be vegan in a non-vegan world. I liked that there is a section of one chapter devoted to factory farming but that is only a small portion of this book. The chapters on how to travel as a vegan and how to talk to people about becoming a vegan are excellent. I recently tested them when traveling to my relatives' house. I installed the Happycow.net app on my phone and we were able to find excellent restaurants, etc. I also brought most of my own food to my relative's home so that helped too. As a librarian who has seen many different cookbooks, etc., this was also a bonus. The recipes look good but I admit that I haven't tried any yet. I prefer Isa Chandra Moskovitz's cookbooks.

This book presents a strong case for eating vegan whether your reasons be for your health or concerns about the animal kingdom. There is much nutritional explanation about the relationships between what we eat and commonly "accepted" diseases. Really helpful is the chart on page 213, "How to Build a Healthy Vegan Meal", the chapter on how to make substitutions for vegan eating, how to stay vegan in a carnivore environment, and many recipes. This book is a good resource for anyone who wants to eat a healthier diet.

I bought this for my mother, but then started reading it myself. Even though I am already vegan, it has great health tips and goes into why it is so healthy for older men and women to go vegan. I truly believe human beings live the healthiest on a vegan diet, and biologically we are best suited for it. Not only that, but as you become older, you want to leave a legacy behind. What better legacy than to find compassion and refuse to contribute to the profitable and pervasive business of animal suffering and torture?

I know the author got in quite a bit of trouble for writing this book, but I really enjoyed it. It wasn't like most of these new military books which read more like a profession of self love than anything - like a certain other SEAL book about a certain sniper. This book read very fluidly, no doubt due to a great co-author and editor, felt very genuine and easy going while not failing to entice strong visuals and powerful emotional responses. You could really visualize where he was and while most of us with never have any idea of what it's like to be there, this felt closer than any movie has depicted. The author was down to earth, proud yet humble, giving credit to not only to his brothers in arms but to the wider defense community. From the large struggles of bureaucracy, morals, politics to the small struggles of where to sleep on a plane full of cargo, the detail and storytelling was top notch. I hope this guy finds the forgiveness of his fellow SEALS and his country because he did a great service and shared a powerful story that humanized these elite fighters who were asked to do far too much in these last two decades,

This is a suspenseful, first-person account of the raid that took down Osama bin Laden in May, 2011. The author, writing under the pseudonym of Mark Owen, was one of the elite SEAL Team Six operators that participated in the raid (his real name has since been revealed as Matt Bissonnette). The book debuted at number one on Amazon. It does not disappoint.The first half of No Easy Day covers Bissonnette's work in SEAL Team Six prior to the Osama bin Laden raid. After a cliffhanger opening that anticipates the climax of the book, the story backs up several years to Bissonnette's Green Team training. He was already a Navy SEAL at this point, but he was trying to become a member of the elite Seal TEAM Six, which is composed of the "best of the best." We follow his deployments in both Iraq and Afghanistan, where the recounting of certain missions serves to establish the proficiency of the author and his team at their job. This is rather standard fare for the subgenre.The latter half of the book is devoted to the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, including the extensive preparations and some of the political aftermath. The actual raid is told in almost moment-by-moment detail, transporting the reader to the compound in Abbottabad. The scene is described so richly that it feels as though we are climbing the stairs with the team as they close in on bin Laden. Several maps and charts help us to picture the location.No Easy Day focuses almost exclusively on Bissonnette's training and deployments. We learn very little about his personal life, which--combined with his intentional pseudonymity--makes it harder to connect with him emotionally. This information was omitted for obvious security reasons. He does share the toll that SEAL life takes on family life, however. "Many of my teammates suffered through bitter divorces. We missed weddings, funerals, and holidays. We couldn't tell the Navy no, but we could tell our families no. And we did often. . . . Work was always the number one priority. It took everything out of you and gave back very little. . . . everything else in the world took a backseat" (106-7). For those wanting a fuller portrait of a Navy SEAL's personal life, see the excellent book by Eric Blehm, Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown, which details the life of SEAL Team Six operator Adam Brown.Bissonnette does not engage in self-aggrandizement or bravado, which has marred some earlier books by former Navy SEALs. The author seems to have a realistic view of himself. He says at one point: "I am not unique or special" (298). He does not hesitate to share instances in combat when he was afraid or made a mistake. He occasionally engages in self-deprecating humor. He regularly dishes out praise for his teammates. Bissonnette says that today's SEALs have "evolved past being egomaniacs" (289). Such professionalism is appreciated.Bissonnette states in the introduction that he has sanitized the book so that it presents no threat to national security. The identities of those involved are masked; special tactics and technology are not revealed; and certain information is generalized. The author says, "If you are looking for secrets, this is not your book" (x). Yet none of these precautions affect the impact of the book. There is still enough specific information to make the action riveting.Despite Bissonnette's precautions, the book is nonetheless generating controversy. Some special operators have challenged his decision to reveal details about the mission, breaking their traditional code of silence. The Department of Defense has threatened to sue because he did not present the book to the Pentagon for inspection prior to publication. The author has responded by pointing out that many people, from the President on down, have revealed details about the mission. He says, "If my commander in chief is willing to talk, then I feel comfortable doing the same" (298). He claims that everything in the book has already appeared in other unclassified sources (xi). I for one am glad that the book was released. It shows that those who commit acts of terror will suffer retribution--perhaps even deadly retribution--for their evil. This should serve as a warning to our enemies.At the end of the book are the names of those SEALs who have paid the ultimate price since September 11, 2001. Bissonnette claims that he is donating the majority of the proceeds from the book to charities that support the families of these fallen Navy SEALs. He encourages readers to donate as well.The book is well-written and a page-turner. Even though the outcome of the book was already known, it maintains a high degree of suspense throughout to see how the situation actually played out. I read it in one sitting. Highly recommended.

Wow! Almost three thousand Reviews prior to mine, so I won't repeat the aforementioned, but rather, put in my own plugs.I have seen various documentaries on t.v. illustrating the situation of the mission, Operation Neptune Spear. This book is different than that of the documentaries. And that is why I wanted to know of this story first hand--by a Special Ops. person who happened to be a team leader, and one of whom had access in seeking out this mass murderer in a compound consisting precisely of enemy encroaching protection. With that said, it happened, not as smoothly as was to be initiated, but with the final outcome to be completed...that of ending Osama bin Laden's further destruction on mankind.If you want a good book learning more of this Seal Team 6, then this is for you. Not only will you learn exactly what went down in the compound, you will be told of this Seal Team by this soldier's narrations, his thoughts, and his conversations. This is a never forgotten mission executed by a certain group of men from our military on the ground who trained endlessly, along with all those involved with listening and watching the best that they could in command posts.I discovered another meaning to a name that had not been explained in a documentary, and that is the word Geronimo. The word had meaning to all branches involved with this mission. Geronimo was to be used in reference to Osama bin Laden if...he had been found, was in the custody of the USA special force teams, and if this mission had been safely accomplished by gaining access back into Afghanistan. Everyone in on this longed to hear that word...knowing the mission was accomplished...waiting the longest and most important 40 minutes plus, of their lives! No one other than Team 6 could see what was happening; the same applying on the helicopters--seeing one crash land and having the author of the book being in that helicopter, so close to the opening of the door that he could have easily lost his life due to the crash landing (not to be attributed by the pilot) but by air factors explained. This happened at the mission's beginning, everyone in communication of seeing it hoping that it did not kill those inside the chopper or hinder a 'possible once in a life time' historical accomplishment. When all was clear and the teams were all basically unharmed, were in their choppers with the body of bin Laden along with his vast wealth of media including discs, drives, tapes, and his own writings, and once across the border of Pakistan and back into Afghanistan as that is where they started from, all those involved could breath and react! Not just those in the White House as we all remember that intense picture, but those in hangers; those who refueled the choppers and for all the other special ops snipers who were in the bushes ready to kill if anyone followed the choppers with the 'precious cargo' who were being refueled; to those at C.I.A. mission headquarters; to Rangers who were ready to do their job; and to the Navy who took the body and did a respectful Muslim burial, though not allowing a trail to his tomb within the dark, deep waters, be of observation. We can not imagine how so many people involved must have felt.When I think about Geronimo, I think back when our soldiers in Iraq searched and stumbled upon a well hidden Saddam Hussein. After a soldier had discovered him and told him that 'President Bush had sent his regards', I then thought of when Paul Bremer walking to his podium those years prior and said to our nation and to the world, "Ladies and Gentlemen...We Got Him!" Years later, proudly again due to our United States Military of Special Ops, President Obama, (who made the decision for the way that this mission would be played out) went to his podium to tell the world of this #1 World's Most Wanted Man, now dead by an undercover operation involving a Special Ops team.Goose bumps still travel my arms when I think back to both and how proud I am to have such an intelligent military working diligently for our nation...behind desks and those on the field everywhere. One can not do without the other, as that is to be.A must read book if ever I have recommended one!This is history in the making!

This book is VERY basic. Contains exactly as it describes, 3 font styles with plenty of pages for drills and practice. Does not, however, give guidelines of any kind, nor does it introduce any creative ideas. Book is lightweight, and aside from the phrases chosen, is not very spiritual in nature.

This book is a really great way to practice calligraphy and also help yourself build your faith. I am so excited to use it, and my lettering has improved.

I was excited to get this book and learn how to do lettering. The price is great, but there is no how-to or instruction in this book. I have to go online to find and print free instructional pages off to show me how to do strokes and learn how to do it before I can use this book. It gives some room for practice and shows a few different kinds of lettering, but this is NOT a How-To or instructional book.

I got this for Christmas and I've already used it quite a bit! It has room to practice the different styles of calligraphy and I'm very happy with it! They have scripture to practice your lettering with and all in all it's a great calligraphy book!

This is a great book for a beginner working on lettering. I thought the p ice was very reasonable and the pages are nice! Would buy this again as a gift!

Wish there were less practice pages and more examples of Lettering for the Lord - but since it's not an expensive buy and the lettering style is so beautiful it was worth purchasing! I like to use tracing paper to practice with it!

The book itself seems to provide a lot of useful information but the editor really tanked their part of this book. It looks as though it was edited by someone with limited skill in the English language who used only the spell checker on their computer. There are lots of grammar errors and even more errors in sentence construction. Mr. de Leon needs to find another editor for his next and future books.

Montaigne's Essays are one of the more enjoyable massive tomes of renaissance writing available, and if reading in English, one has two major modern choices of translation, Screech and Frame.To start with Translation: Both major translations are excellent in their own way, but some differences are of note. When a translation is done, usually the translator will translate the major language of the text, French in this case, and leave quotes by the author from other languages, mostly Latin in this case, untranslated. The translator will provide a note with the translation of the quote, and preferably the source of the quote.This is where Screech and Frame differ considerably. Screech does what should be done, and Frame just translates everything into English with no significant notations other than the person quoted. This means, however, that one may prefer one translation over the other based on this alone. For example, one that wishes to take a more scholarly look will likely use Screech (or the original), and one that simply wants to read for pleasure may have no problem using the translation by Frame. Also, Screech is British and Frame is American, so one may have other preferences for style.As for the Physical Copy:The physical copies of Frame's translation (Stanford and Everyman's) are vastly superior to the Penguin Classics Screech version. The Penguin paperback is thick, but in keeping with the generally small form factor, the print is terribly small, and the paper is of a horrible quality, which is the reason I also purchased the Kindle version.As for the Kindle version:The Penguin Classics Kindle file is much more pleasant to read and deal with than the paperback alternative. However, there are many errors in the Kindle version that are not present in the paperback version. It appears some items get corrected occasionally, but still, it is not nice to charge so much for the Kindle version, and not have it completely proofread and ready for primetime.This actually lead me to have a conversation with a Penguin representative about the quality of the Kindle version, and in that conversation, I learned something I had not realized before. Penguin does not produce the Kindle version. Amazon does. So, all of the quality issues I have noticed in the past about Kindle versions essentially are the fault of Amazon rather than the publisher listed. I suppose the publisher only sells Amazon license to produce the Kindle file and sets price limitations, and Amazon does the rest. This needs to change, because there needs to be more quality control.***EDIT 02/01/2016: SEE COMMENT BELOW BY RAFA. APPARENTLY, IT IS THE PUBLISHER'S FAULT, NOT AMAZON'S.***However, because of the limitations of the Penguin paperback, I would still recommend the Kindle version if one is to read Screech.Five stars for Montaigne's Complete Essays, regardless of which version one chooses to read.

I have three translations of Montaigne - Cotton, Frame (this one) and Screech (no kidding). The Cotton translation was done in the late 18th century and is some what difficult to read. Frame was done in the 1950's and is very readable. Screech is more recent and is also quite readable. Frame simply translates Montaigne's frequent Latin quotes whereas Screech presents the Latin along with the translation. While this may be more scholarly, it is distracting if you don't read Latin.The Frame volume includes other works by Montaigne such as his travel journals. Thus, it is more complete than either Cotton or Screech. This volume is over 1300 pages and is not very portable. Still I recommend it as being more complete and a little more readable.

If you are looking for something rare or specific, you should look which book it is before purchasing. All of them are available on Amazon..HELP FOR STUDENTSSome college professors are adamant that only this book be read. You might need to write papers with citations. This book is very different than the other books. Screech's is better for students and scholars. It includes citations and the very short Latin and French quotes that he uses, though all of it is translated into English for you. The Latin and French line/quotes/references are usually very short. The translations are right next to quotes in parenthesis. If you purchase a different collection, you will have a very difficult time with writing papers because of the varying translations.Overall, this is a phenomenal read produced by a prolific and prominent man. Screech does a great job. This is the best book of the collections that I have purchased, though it is the most difficult to understand. Again, this collection is more for scholars and academics. Montaigne is studied to this day, nearly as much as Shakespeare because of the sheer difficulty of the paradoxes presented, but, they are enlightening and enjoyable. In terms of literature, Montaigne is one of the "trickiest" reads (he calls himself tricky-- it is a bit of his trademark).

The subject of this book is Michel de Montaigne, a 16th century frenchman, famous for writing this book. The topics he covers range from the wisdom of the ancient philosophers to everyday nuisances present in the life of the late 16th century. The overriding theme throughout is his focus on himself, the only subject he is sure that he knows better than anyone else. This book is valuable because he writes about subjects that are still relevant to today, over 400 years later, and will continue to be relevant throughout man's history to come. He asks questions that every human finds himself asking at some point. He focuses on ethics and theology and the human soul, and much more.His writing style is relaxing and candid. The book is broken up into numerous seemingly disjointed sections and can be read for 10 minutes or a couple hours at a time. Montaigne writes in a friendly tone but also covers plenty of serious subjects. This book is unique in providing what life was like for one man who lived over four centuries ago.
