This track series by Jason Reynolds is full of real life moments in the characters he portrays. You feel the characters grow under the track coaches honest, straight-forward feedback and the connections within the team.

My11 year old son really enjoys this author.

I am a middle school reading teacher and these books grabbed the interest of some of my most reluctant readers. The characters are very realistic and the dialogue is authentic. (Surprisingly, some students struggled with the dialogue even though it is written exactly as they speak to one another.) I first bought the series because I have a 13 year old daughter and 11 year old daughter who are both high readers and happen to run track. They tore through the series in one week because they were so interested even though the lives of the characters don't fit their own personal experiences. Kuddos to Jason Reynolds for filling a void in teen fiction with this beautifully written "Track" series.

This is the third volume of a series abut the life and adventures of an unlikely officer of the Royal Navy starting in the late 1890's. The protagonist is more complex than the prolific author's usual heroes in his other series, as is the age in which the story takes place. In any case, he has matured, and he is a much more sympathetic character than he was when this story started.By now, we are at the beginning of 1900, with the protagonist just married and assigned to the British Legation in Peking, as Beijing was then called in all European languages. Not much happens there, apart from rescuing some missionaries, and this is followed by a return Shanghai and taking command of a protected cruiser, as our hero's first naval command. Not much happens again, until he captures an American gun runner and later participates in the sinking of an old Chinese cruiser. Fortunately, the periods in which not much happens, are filled with social events descriptions of the events in China, and of the life of expatriates there, especially in Shanghai. The author has done his research, and this book is positively edifying in a pleasant way. Indeed, this book struck me as about 25% action, and 75% description (not to be confused with filler). There is indeed, much to learn, as the political situation in China was very complex, the Boxer Rebellion was starting to spread, and there were more and more incidents as the clock ran down to what became to the Siege of Peking from July 1900 and probably best known to readers from the film "55 Days in Peking."All in all, this book is not so much a page turner as a pleasant read. It ends in June 1900, and no doubt, our hero will have much to do with the clashes that took place from July, much more than just the siege. I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment of his life and hope that it will continue into the years that followed. All the same, I rated this book at four stars, because the author's scholarship was too often marred by his obvious dislike of the British Empire of the time. This is an arguable view, but it would have been more convincing had he not described most of his senior characters so shallowly and sometimes almost as caricatures. Of course, for readers sharing Mr. Wareham's views, this could be a five-star book.

This is the third book of this series chronicling the naval career of Magnus Campbell now known as Captain Lord Eskdale RN. As the Boxers power grows atrocities against foreign missionaries increases leading to the necessity of military intervention. The "Godmen" and often their families are not popular with either a majority the peasants nor their overlords making them a target. Lord Eskdale, assigned as the Naval Attache in Peking, out of necessity becomes involved in such a rescue complicated by several factors. He later returns to sea and sometimes finds himself questioning the accepted perception of the Chinese by the foreign powers. Whatever his personal opinion may be he is first of all an officer in the Royal NavyThis series offers a look at a China, dominated by the Great Powers, in the final years Qing Dynasty leading up to the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. Although this is a work of fiction historical characters such as John Jellicoe who later commanded the Grand Fleet at Jutland in WWI appear in the book. Please remember that this is historical fiction and some literary liberties are taken.Overall I have enjoyed all three books of the series and am looking forward to the next book

This author - Andrew Wareham - is remarkably prolific. Even though the characters for his different series often have some similar characteristics, he still keeps it interesting. One thing I do object to - All his lead characters seem to have this inherent sense of what it the right thing to do at any time. They react instantly rather than having to think about it sometimes like most of us do.I read every one of Mr. Wareham's books as soon as they come out and am rarely disappointed. I do wish he would add to his Man of Conflict series - probably my favorite. Or maybe have his characters interact between series??

I get tired or writing about how amazing Wareham and his novels are. I read this is in two days. Can't wait for Book 4. Series is set in China before WWI and concerns the unofficial "war" between the great countries over who will control China. The dueling navies are still in the age of steam. The Boxer rebellion is gaining strength. The characters are "real." The action and intrigue are pretty much non-stop. I just don't know how Wareham cranks these out (at least two novels a year). Who cares?

Continuation of previous books. Not a series to be read out of order. Magnus continues his service in China leading up to the Boxer Rebellion. Book is nicely written, but the fun for me is the philosophical world of institutional racism that was the world around 1900. The author does a nice job of showing the way most Europeans saw each other, and nonEuropeans. Not a deep book and most characters including the main character are fairly shallow.

I may be a bit prejudiced. I have read all of mr Wareham's books and I like them all very much. This third book in The Earl's Other Son series is no exception. The theatre is the China region where the great nations play their Great Game. Mr Wareham explains along the lines of his story what that was all about. Again an inspiring history lesson which does not in any way diminishes the thrill of lord Eskdale's sea adventures. As usual, I can not wait for the next one in this series.

Wareham is one of my favorite current authors. He writes a good action yarn, but adds cultural color that gives dimension to the story. In this book we see the ending days of sail, the rise of a different breed of commander, an evolving British navy, and a glimpse of an American navy growing but still not quite matured.

I liked the book overall, although I did get a bit bogged down in the politics of the Chinese, the warlords versus the Empress. The descriptive language gives a good impression of what the situation for day to day duty for the Royal Navy on China Station was like. I liked it well enough to look forward to the next installment!

Review

"Libraries are replete with books on church history, reflections of renowned theologians and analyses of past culture and society. However, few volumes apply historical developments to an understanding of contemporary challenges and their implications on the future. Southern Baptist Identity is a valuable compilation confronting this formidable task. With contributions from notable denominational leaders, this volume acknowledges the phenomenal growth of Southern Baptists but recognizes the impact a changing world and postmodern society will have on the future of its churches and collectively on the Southern Baptist Convention. While readers will not necessarily agree with the insights and conclusions of each writer, they will find the diverse perspectives valid as they grapple with the contemporary realities of denominational life and trends."―Jerry Rankin, Former President, International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention"The Southern Baptist Convention is preparing for a new generation of global witnesses. To understand the purpose and passion of the world's largest cooperative network of evangelical churches, read this book. I am grateful for this scholarly insight and spiritual challenge as we seek to fulfill the Great Commission in the twenty-first century."―Jack Graham, pastor, Prestonwood Baptist Church; Former President, Southern Baptist Convention"All Baptists should draw water from these wells of provocative essays and lectures in order to avoid historical amnesia or political euphoria. We are reminded that we dare not be content with kicking the convention can further down the road; instead, we must be forward-leaning, asking the hard questions about present and future. This work calls us to a rigorous and serious mapping of the contours of our convention road." ―Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church, Naples, FL

This book candidly observes where we have been and where we are, and it offers some biblically faithful steps to help us journey on from here. Every Southern Baptist (especially leaders) should read this book and be prepared to implement plans to achieve the stated goals, or they should be prepared to argue persuasively against doing so.

It was awesome! It was great learning about what I believe. Not finished yet, but so far great book to read on being Southern Baptist.

I found this helpful in looking at the SBC and where they have been and where they are going. I would recommend.

I received the book in excellent conditions.

Dockery does a great job with this book and sharing the views of the SBC. I am very pleased with the copy that I received.

Obviously, this book is written about Southern Baptists by Southern Baptists for Southern Baptists, encouraging them to remember the past, consider the present, and look to the future. But do you have to be Southern Baptist to benefit? Absolutely not. There are elements that any minister can apply to either his/her movement or his/her local church. The first half of the book sets a foundation based on the history and teachings of the Baptist movement. The second half challenges us to be evangelistic and open to change the negotiables of our faith while maintaining the non-negotiables of doctrine or what makes Baptists unique, such as a regenerated membership, foundation solely on Scripture, and an autonomous fellowship.Every minister should read this book, especially Southern Baptists interested in making their congregations and denomination stronger.

This collection of essays from many of the best known conservative leaders within the Southern Baptist Convention traces the history of the convention and charts a course for its future. The future, in the view of these pastors, scholars and leaders, is to go back to the core biblical values that marked the SBC in the past while seeking to understand how to engage the culture with the gospel.Recurring themes in the book include the need to avoid the programmatic and pragmatic approaches of the past without neglecting entirely what organized efforts like the Cooperative Program can accomplish. The necessity of regenerate church membership is also often mentioned as a key factor churches must face in the years to come. The plateau/decline in baptisms is pointed out as a factor indicating a lack of evangelism among Southern Baptists. It seems that the conservative resurgence of the early 80's has yet to bear fruit in many respects. These essays say that the SBC must address the stagnated state of some 90% of their churches by recovering the biblical gospel and the, in their view, distinctively biblical heritage of Southern Baptists.I was challenged and encouraged most by the essays from Ed Stetzer and Danny Akin, but there is much to commend in each essay. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Southern Baptist life and the future of the Convention.
