4.5 stars. The book was a lot better than Love, Lies and Spies; it felt like Anstey took all the critisism of the the previous novel and did a good job aplying it to this one. As a result the story was less silly and way more engaging. I really liked the balance between the mystery and the romance. Both had the same measure of importance to the plot and certain part of lightness. The only problem I have to mention, I felt the book needed some triming. At parts the story was dragging and it took me way to long to read it for story of this sort.On other hand I really liked the characters. I liked that Lydia, while still a proper Regency heroine, was portraited as capable, smart and independent person. I liked that Anstey tried to talk about the restrictions women had to deal with at the period. And it felt very satisfying how the marriage proposition was dealt at the conclusion of the story.I liked Robert, I liked how funny, ready-witted and nice in core he is. I appreciate the respect he has for Lydia, that he sees her more than just a pretty flower. He wasn’t just a love interest, this is his story as much as it is Lydia’s. Their romance was very natural and believable, mostly because they always treated each other as friends on equal terms. So 50-60 pages less and it could be 5 star review. I think I will eagerly read Cindy Anstey next book.

Duels & Deception is a delightful, fantastic, romantic romp in the past, with a heroine who isn't quite willing to force herself to fit into the expectations of her day. I enjoyed Lydia's attempts at controlling and shaping her future, and the build of her relationship with Robert. Her kidnapping results in a mystery to be solved that helps complicate the story line and add a flavor of suspense and urgency. This story does have an interesting little twist, which I won't spoil by revealing. However, I did enjoy the fact that it wasn't completely predictable, while still delivering a happy ending for the heroine. While written as a YA novel, this adult enjoyed Duels & Deceptions very much and hopes Cindy Anstey will continue on with the series.

Having read and collected Regencies since the heydays of Georgette Heyer, early Mary Balogh, Emily Hendrickson, Gayle Buck et. al., reading this was like poufing Redi-Whip instead of artisanal Strauss heavy cream atop my strawberry pie. IOW, very lightweight - innocuous, but repetitive and a little clumsy. It's always tricky, the process of having the heroine and hero fall in love in genteel refinement. The authors mentioned above managed it very well - not every time, but quite often. This is especially true with a spirited heroine. If you want to see how a truly skilled author pulls it off, try Heyer's Venetia, or The Grand Sophy.Lydia and Robert show very little charm, spirit, or humor during their interactions. It's a rather dull tale, actually. I'm sorry to say this won't make it into my permanent collection.

This review is premature, as I'm only about 15% into the book. But I must speak; the plodding, wordy, leaden prose of this book could not be farther from Jane Austen's work. And the characters -- lots of words, not much life to them so far. Again, a kind of anti-Austen trait.I'm hoping that the plot will outweigh the delivery mechanism, so I'll keep reading. But I am already sadly disappointed by this book -- the only comparison to Austen is that it is set in the Regency period and among the landed gentry. Makes me wonder if all those reviewers have ever read Jane Austen.

Unlike her pervious book, this one was a little more predictable and way too slow at building up to climax of the story. The premise sounded very exciting - a kidnapping, a forbidden love, and duels which it delivered but not in an exciting manner. I did like the main characters Lydia and Robert. I wanted to know what was going to happen to them and genuinely cared if they ended up working things out. Just a little more drama and excitement would have bumped up the rating for me.

This is a beach read for people who like Austen but want less of the 19th century sense of women's self-deprecation. It's light. It's fun. Lydia is a delightful character, and the plot has enough surprises to keep the book from being predictable.I liked Love, Lies, and Spies, but this one is better.

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub, by Audrey Wood

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4 In this humorously original tale, various members of the Court, all clothed in elaborate Elizabethan dress, try to dislodge the King from his bubbly tub. Instead they are drawn into it with him, to "do battle" with toy ships and warriors; to eat a lavish feast; to fish and to dance. It is the young page who finds a solution, finally, by pulling the plug. Much of the delight is in Don Wood's meticulous oil paintings, which juxtapose the starched, overdressed, "shocked" demeanor of the Court with the King's twinkling, sensual, even lascivious manner. Minute details in the paintings emphasize this contrast; the red-haired naked King frolics while the fully-clothed courtiers emerge dripping from the bath with literally all their starch taken out. A voluptuous book whose rich range of colors and tones reflect the passing hours of the day. As in the Woods' Napping House (HBJ, 1984), the few simple words of text per large, well-designed page invite storytellingbut keep the group very small, so the children can be close enough to pore over the brilliant, robust illustrations. Susan Patron, Los Angeles Public LibraryCopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

An absolute classic, sustained through the ages and still loved by children today. I loved this book as a little child, about age 3 or 4 when I first read it, in the early 80s. I am Deaf, and my Deaf professor and his daughter, who is hard of hearing, also love this book. He read it to her when she was growing up, and by read, I assume he signed it to her in sign language. No one knew I was Deaf when I was 3, and I could not always tell what was going on, but this book is so beautifully illustrated, the faces on the characters are so expressive, and there is so much color and things to look at in the pictures that I imagine it is a reason that the book resonates with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. I purchased this book on Amazon for my friend who recently had twin girls. I bought it for their first birthday. She has older children, 10 and 12, and they also love the book. I am not entirely sure why, but it seems to be a good book for children with different disabilities, and can be appreciated by many for its story as well as the illustrations.

I thought that 20 months might be too young for this book, but it's one of my favorites, so I got it for my son. He is old enough to find the book hilarious, and he will occasionally get out of the bathtub without crying if I preface it by reciting the last part of the book.I'm not saying that this is a baby book; the pictures are amazing, and the story is funny. I read it to my 3rd-5th graders, and they love it. Honestly, you could spend 20 minutes looking at each page, and still miss some cool detail. Don and Audrey Wood are among my favorite children's author/illustrators, and their books deserve a place alongside your Maurice Sendak and Mo Willems books.

I typically read a few of the low reviews and a few of the high reviews. We had this book 25 years ago when our kids were growing up. I was invited to a book baby shower and I immediately thought of this. One of the reviews here was particularly critical of the juvenile plot! So note...this is a kids book...not a Pulitzer Prize adult book. But it does have an adult sized underlying message....don't let common sense and doing the right thing stand in your way of questioning authority. I won't ruin the plot....gotta buy this one.

Children enjoy the ridiculous, and an authority figure who won't get out of a bathtub is certainly that. Like many picture books, Don and Audrey Wood's whimsically illustrated "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" is geared toward 4-8-year-olds but would appeal to the love for the absurd that resides in readers of all ages.A major theme of King Bidgood is that the solution to what seems like an impossible problem is often quite simple and can be solved by a mere child. The young page in this story enlists the help of all his "betters"--a knight, a queen, a duke, and the entire court--to get the king out of the bathtub, but in the end, he (a simple servant boy) outwits them all. While the others invent elaborate needs that the king must attend to--battles, feasts, fishing, and dancing--the page simply pulls the plug.Much of the book's humor lies in the characterization of the king and his court. Rather than get out of the tub or reject the court's expressed needs, the king tries to satisfy the needs while remaining where he's at. He gladly welcomes the knight to battle in his tub, the queen to feast in his tub, the duke to fish in his tub, and--to every child's delight--the entire court to dance in his tub. These are feats that can only be accomplished through pure, fun-loving imagination on the part of the illustrator and the readers. As the book progresses, the court's facial responses are grossly exaggerated, their expressions of amazement and dismay heightening. And when the court fail in their attempts, they try to preserve their dignity, however wet and bedraggled they may be. The king, on the other hand, is completely at ease until the very end of the book, when suddenly the page adopts a look of immense satisfaction and pulls the bathtub plug, and the king is left astonished and fumbling for a towel. In addition to providing humor and developing characters, the illustrations provide a rhythmic framework of light for the plot, alternating between the well-lit bathroom and the ever-changing quality of light in the castle hall, where the moon rises and falls. Within the general rhythmic framework of the illustrations lie fascinating details. The more one looks, the more one sees. The cake in the feast scene has a miniature king-in-bathtub figure on top; the knight in the battle scene accidentally leaves the bathroom with a tiny ship on the end of his scabbard . . . An observant reader will also notice that the chain to the bathtub plug is visible in every picture, as a foreshadowing of the solution. The text, also rhythmic, is unrhymed, but each time the king invites folks into his tub, his plea ends in a delightful three-word repetition: boom, boom, boom; yum, yum, yum; trout, trout, trout; and jig, jig, jig. In the end, though, the king is stunned into silence, and the last repetition--or last laugh, you might say--is not his own, but the tub's: glub, glub, glub. The book will leave children clamoring for more, and Don and Audrey Wood have plenty of others that will satisfy, including the award-winning "The Napping House," which has in common with King Bidgood a delightful brand of visual slapstick distinctive to the Woods. Both books would make an excellent addition to any child's or classroom's library.

My kids love this book so much, we had to buy a second so they each can have a copy. We also bought one for the class book exchange. The other child loves it too. We have so much fun making silly voices for each of the characters and talking about the details we find in the pictures.

The illustrations in this book are amazing. Be prepared your family will want to read this every night. I also got the napping house. I have to recommend that one as well. And the ryhming in the story is so easy to remember don't be surprised if by the 3 read your kids are reading along with you. Love Love Love this book

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub is a rollicking story of an unmannerly king. The marriage of the lyrical text with lush romantic illustrations in oil on pressed board lay bare the opulence of this self-indulgent monarch. The succulent double-page, full-bleed spreads revel in the grandeur of the idle rich and extend the text of this story in which a king refuses to exit his bath despite the best efforts of all at court only to be thwarted by his seemingly helpless page in a show of wit. Although young children will be mesmerized by the unadulterated beauty of this work, it is a rare opportunity to help high school students recapture the magic of poetry while teaching the mechanics of it including not only poetic and sound devices but also repetition, tercets and couplets, and the impact of structure.

My daughter was obsessed with this book when she was about 15-16 months old. We read it everyday and she liked to point out different things on each scene, e.g. fish, cake, fork etc. she’s now 17 months old. She still likes it a lot. The ending is clever.

A collection like this for trumpet should have these songs transcribed from the concert key to Bb for trumpet. These tunes are inconsistent. Some of them are in Bb, some of them are in the original concert key, and some others are in different keys all together. The first one I noticed was "Stella By Starlight." In this book it's printed in the concert key and a trumpet player would have to move every note a full step up to play it with a piano player in the original key. It would be much better for the trumpet player to get these tunes under their fingers in the correct key first. I just got this book and these errors are immediately apparent. I may have noticed some errors to the melodies too while thumbing through the book. Perhaps I'll make an update to this review as I identify more of its issues.A great collection of songs, of course, but a big disappointment that it's not truly a book arranged for trumpet as advertised.

Great selection from the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. The songs are located on one page or across the next page which doesn't require page turning to continue playing.

An excellent set of American jazz standards with guitar chords as well. They are simple enough to pick up quickly, but lend themselves to interpretation. I use this for both trumpet and my flugelhorn for the ballads and mello songs.

If you play the trumpet you need this book!

My grandson loved it!

I am better at reading bass clef even though I am playing trumpet, and because this was in lower treble clef range I could read and play it all. It was well worth the investment. All of these songs are easy to play.

I simply love this Item I can read it so clearly! This book is my number one tool for now on.

Great beginner/intermediate book. Too easy for my high schooler but she has fun sight reading them.
