Trying to expand my world by seeking out nonfiction titles from publishers outside of the U.S. Came across this title because it made the 2019 Outstanding International Books list for USBBY.The author, Wab Kinew, is member of the indigenous group Midewin, an activist and politician, and lives in Canada. He is also musician (rap/hip hop) and you can watch him sing versions of this song on YouTube. The book references indigenous people who are "heroes" (past and present) for all communities. Some of the figures will be recognized by children (Sacagawea & Jim Thorpe), but many will not be. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce students to unfamiliar, heroic figures and ask the question that Kinew asks in his book, "You're a person who matters. So what will you do?"Some suggestions for an interactive read aloud:*find a video of Kinew singing a version of this to introduce students to the author and his music (watch in advance because there are some versions that are more appropriate than others)*read the book aloud for the joy of it*if you can, project it and ask students to read along with you; it's poetic and best read aloud*define "hero" for the students in kid-friendly terms so they can use this definition to explain and elaborate on their understanding of the text*read aloud, stopping to ask questions like---Why do you think Kinew chose this figure to include? What in the text makes you think so? What can you infer (using your prior knowledge about what it means to be a hero)?-How do Morse's illustrations support the idea that this person is heroic?-What are questions you have about this figure?-What is the role of the title "go show the world" in this book? How is this connected to Kinew's introduction to these historic figures?A lot of potential. Would be a great book for small groups to lean in and read together and discuss. Lots of room for written responses as well.Don't skip the author's note at the end. Reveals themes that are woven into text and illustrations. There are also short bios about each of the figures - worthy of reading aloud to students. This would also be a good mentor text or launch for writers in a workshop setting. What are other historic figures we can add to this book? How would you reveal their heroism in just a few lines of poetry with an illustration? PLUS Kinew, himself, is a hero--why might we think of him as a hero? How could we add him to this song?

Many people ignore the contributions to society made by the Indigenous peoples of North America. This book highlights a handful of our Indigenous heroes in a poetic easy to read format. At the end of the book there is information on each person highlighted in the book. The writing and illustration are great for any elementary age child. As an Indigenous teacher I am always looking for books about Indigenous peoples written by Indigenous authors. This book has been a great addition to our class library.

Great kids book with great illustrations.

This is an uplifting narrative of famous Indigenous heroes, people for young kids to look up to and emulate. It is a way for young people to feel good about their history and to learn about their heroes, both old and modern. This is something that young kids, especially of Indigenous descent will enjoy.

Bettyville: A Memoir, by George Hodgman

Amazon.com Review

The Amazon Spotlight Pick for March 2015: When George Hodgman left Manhattan for Paris to visit his aging mother, he didn’t realize it would be the beginning of an unintended, and indeterminate tenure as a caregiver. Did I mention that it’s Paris, Missouri? They say you can’t go home again, and in Hodgman’s case, you can understand why he wouldn’t want to—Paris hadn’t proven to be the most hospitable place for someone coming to terms with their sexuality. This was compounded by the fact that Hodgman’s parents didn’t approve of who he “turned out to be,” which was as specific as they were willing to get on the matter. Any gaps in their understanding were filled with an insidious silence that kept this otherwise loving family at arm’s length. I haven’t forgotten what this book is called and, no doubt, you will fall in love with the impossible and endearing woman that is its namesake. But at its heart, Bettyville serves as a poignant cautionary tale about the dangers of leaving difficult things unsaid, and in these pages, Hodgman practices what he preaches. –Erin Kodicek

Review

Nautilus Book Awards Gold WinnerPraise for Bettyville“A remarkable, laugh-out-loud book . . . Rarely has the subject of elder care produced such droll human comedy, or a heroine quite on the mettlesome order of Betty Baker Hodgman. For as much as the book works on several levels (as a meditation on belonging, as a story of growing up gay and the psychic cost of silence, as metaphor for recovery), it is the strong-willed Betty who shines through.” —The New York Times“A lovely memoir . . .You won’t finish this tale dry-eyed.” —People, Book of the Week“A gorgeously constructed memoir . . . Hodgman creates an unforgettable portrait of his mother, Betty—a strong-willed nonagenarian struggling against the slow-motion breakdown of her mind and body. He evokes her with wit and tenderness.” —The New York Times Book Review“Without a doubt my favorite book of the year. Wise, witty, and heartbreaking . . . a surprisingly profound and hilarious look at aging, mothers and sons, fathers and sons, growing up gay and small-town life in America.” —Nathan Lane, “Who Read What: Books of the Year 2015,” The Wall Street Journal“A humorous, bittersweet account of Hodgman’s caring for his aging, irascible mother.” —Vanity Fair“Hodgman has written what will be seen, even years from now, as the quintessential book on taking care. . . . His desire to empathize, his focus on goodness, his search for hope allow him to find the beauty in the hour of now.” —Chicago Tribune“An intimate, heartfelt portrait of a mother and son, each at the crossroads of life . . . Hodgman’s sharp wit carries the book ever forward.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune  “A superb memoir . . . Hodgman is by turns wry, laugh-out-loud funny, self-deprecating, insecure to the point of near suicide, and an attentive caregiver despite occasional, understandable resentments. . . . I have read several hundred American memoirs; I would place Bettyville in the top five.” —Steve Weinberg, Kansas City Star “In his tender, sardonic, and fearless account of life with Betty—who has never acknowledged that her son is gay—Hodgman delivers an epic unfolding of his lifelong search for acceptance and love.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Hodgman paints a witty and poignant portrait of a son and his mother reconciling their differences and learning, among other things, how to cook, come to grips with caretaking, understand unspoken sexuality, and treat each other with patience, love, and self-respect. Surely we all have a beautifully complex and hilarious (if not semi-dysfunctional) relationships with our mothers, but none of us are likely to commemorate it with the skill and humor of Hodgman.” —Los Angeles Magazine“An exquisitely written memoir about the complicated but deeply genuine love a son feels for his courageous, headstrong, vulnerable mother in the twilight of her life. George Hodgman is stunningly clear-eyed and yet so darned big-hearted. Bettyville is just wonderful.” —Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle   “The idea of a cultured gay man leaving New York City to care for his aging mother in Paris, Missouri, is already funny, and George Hodgman reaps that humor with great charm. But then he plunges deep, examining the warm yet fraught relationship between mother and son with profound insight and understanding. This book looks outside, too, offering a moving lament for small-town America. Hodgman tenderly evokes the time before family farms and small businesses were replaced by meth labs and Walmarts. Yet he’s not sentimental about that lost world—he knew its cruelties firsthand. As George and his mother come to terms with one another at the end of her days, the book begins to shimmer with something much more rare than love: a boundless, transcendent, and simple kindness. Bettyville is a beautiful book about the strange plenitude that comes from finally letting go of everything.” —Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home   “Bettyville is a beautifully crafted memoir, rich with humor and wisdom. George Hodgman has created an unforgettable book about mothers and sons, and about the challenges that come with growing older and growing up.” —Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club“This is a superior memoir, written in a witty and episodic style, yet at times it’s heartbreaking . . . filled with a lifetime’s worth of reflection and story after fascinating story.” —Library Journal (starred review)“Hodgman writes with wit and empathy about all the loss he’s confronted with. Betty’s poor health is mirrored by the failure of towns like Paris, whose farms and lumberyards are now Walmarts and meth labs. Coming out in the age of AIDS, he lost the people he was close to when he had nowhere else to turn. . . . That doesn’t mean Bettyville is without humor—far from it. Paris eccentrics (one woman shampoos her hair in the soda fountain) compete with Hodgman’s colleagues in the office of Vanity Fair. . . . This is a portrait of a woman in decline, but still very much alive and committed to getting the lion’s share of mini-Snickers at every opportunity. When things are left unsaid between parents and children, it leaves a hurt that can never be completely repaired, but love and dedication can make those scarred places into works of art. Bettyville is one such masterpiece.” —BookPage“The book is instantly engaging, as Hodgman has a wry sense of humor, one he uses to keep others at a distance. Yet the book is also devastatingly touching. Betty is one tough cookie, and she is crumbling. Hodgman as a young man came out around the same time AIDS did, complicating his already complicated feelings immeasurably. There’s a lot for Hodgman to handle, yet he does, despite the urge to give in to his own sadness and his own former drug addiction. A tender, resolute look at a place, literal and figurative, baby boomers might find themselves.” —Booklist “Bettyville is a gorgeous memoir. I was completely engaged, not just because of George Hodgman’s great ear and his sense of timing, but because he delivers Betty to us in such a manner that she steps off the page . I felt transported to a better place, to a time period and a web of relationships with which we can all identify,  no matter where we grew up. Beyond the humor and the pathos, the quotidian and the bizarre, there remain profound lessons about life and love that I will carry away.” —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone “George Hodgman achieves something stunning with this book—by paying such deep, loving attention to his mother’s (admittedly colorful) life, he offers us the chance to pay close attention to our own strange and beautiful Bettyvilles, which in the end is all we can ask of any art. This bejeweled pillbox is rich and funny and heartwrenching and might just you cure you of your ills; if those ills include loneliness or feeling like you don’t belong—you are not alone.” —Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City “One of the great benefits of reading memoir is that it offers the reader more people to love. I love Betty, and I love George Hodgman, whose beautiful book this is. Read Bettyville. Laugh, weep, and be grateful.” —Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life “Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea. This story of a sensitive Midwestern boy coming to terms with his homosexuality, his drug addiction, his clueless parents, his all-out war with shame, is nothing short of epic. It begins as a simple trip home from fast-track Manhattan to Paris, Missouri, to care for a failing mother, but by the time we are through, we have descended to an underworld, witnessed a plague, traveled all nine circles of hell, and emerged exhilarated by the grit and valor of our remarkable guide. It is, in every sense, a tale about the power of love.” —Marie Arana, author of American Chica “With great tenderness, honesty, and a searing, sardonic humor, George Hodgman has written a love letter to his mother, at once a penance and a tribute.  In doing so, he has given us Betty, a character for the ages. This is a beautiful, illuminating book.” —Dani Shapiro, author of Devotion “When I read the first few pages of Bettyville, I immediately connected. The detail is poetry and, yes, George Hodgman tells a story that is all our stories if we grow up different, struggling not to hurt those we treasure. But what I will most remember is the human struggle of Betty—the woman at the window, the woman at the piano, the woman whose desire to help others represents the best of small-town America. The silence she was taught and the complications of our parents’ journeys to be there for us, as best they could, is what I will take away from Bettyville, where she will always reside. Hers is the quiet love that outlasts the distances and lets us survive.” —Richard Blanco, United States inaugural poet, author of The Prince of los Cucuyos: A Miami Childhood

It looks like you'll be enthused or underwhelmed, and I'm with the 1/3 of the reviewers who are underwhelmed. In fact, after hearing so many good things, I was disappointed. Certainly it jumps around from theme to theme, but that didn't bother me as it does some other reviewers. It simply wasn't compelling; the treatment of being gay in the 1980s, dealing with the dementia of a parent, coming home to a declining middle America -- all good topics, but none treated with the incisiveness and specialness I expected in a book so highly regarded by so many. On the plus side, the author is very clever and very witty; many lines are very special, and I laughed out loud a number of times, which I'm not induced to do easily. For a native Missourian (I'm a Missourian but not a native), the descriptions (albeit with some liberties) of real places and times will be special to you (so my fellow book clubbers tell me). So, go ahead and read it -- it's a quick read, and the humor is worth it. Just don't expect so much, and if you start with that mindset, you might feel like its a 4-star or 5-star read.

I'm a hard sell. When someone tells me a book is funny, I invariably wind up wondering why s/he found it funny -- because I definitely did not. I tend to ignore most reviews of books (or movies), preferring to decide for myself on the merits, or lack of them in a given piece of work. That said, I chose to review Bettyville because I was actually intrigued by the cover--the very reason we've always been told not to judge a book. But the photograph had an authentic feel to it that rang a small bell for me. So I got the book. And I truly loved it. I loved George Hodgman and his mother; his father, too.Hodgman's great gift is to present the connective tissue between reader and writer, the thoughts and feelings and events that knit us together in a manner achieved only by the most profoundly truthful and deeply felt telling of lives lived. In spite of our obvious differences (male/female, straight/gay, etc) Hodgman's feelings mirror my own in too many ways to enumerate. He made me laugh repeatedly; he moved me often. I felt his irritation, his anger with himself, and his good-hearted impulses toward others. I knew him because he reveals himself so completely, so courageously, so hilariously. For example: "Just a typical American family, torn between love and homicide, but united in our own way." One just has to laugh at something so absolutely true. This book deserves recognition and accolades. Read it and feel your heart open and then constrict, then open again. The parent in me wants to adopt the little boy in George. The child in me wants to be friends with that lonely boy whose isolation feels remembered to me. And the sister in me wants to help George prepare some treats for Betty, and then persuade her to put on her comfy old wrecked sandals so that we can all go out for a nice, easy walk.

"Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea."Wow! Writers kill for reviews like this. George Hodgman has my admiration for completing and publishing "Bettyville," and I feel bad because I wasn't as moved by it as others were, both here and in the media. I liked reading about George and Betty and sure it might have rambled a bit here and there, but I thought it was good. A little long, but good. I wondered why there was no real resolution to the tension that builds as we all worry about "What's gonna happen to Betty?" George doesn't take us there. I suppose that's not necessarily a bad thing.I think George has tapped into a new vein of literature -- Baby Boomers coming home to take care of Mom and Dad in their last years. I've been through it, along with millions of others, and there is a comfort in knowing others are coping with the same issues and events.I guess I felt like there was an overarching sadness about George not being able to be who he truly is with his folks. I understand why. He didn't want to disappoint them. But still . . .George didn't have "the talk" with Betty. But he did get her to say "You could do worse" about the doctor. And that's something right there.

“Habits of secrecy are damaging things.”Home Fire, long listed for this year’s Mann Booker Prize, is Kamila Shamsie’s much acclaimed 7th novel, and the first of hers I’ve read though I’ve long admired her essays. Shamsie uses the old Greek myth about Antigone, to underpin a very modern story following a British Pakistani family based in London. Note: I would recommend not re-reading Antigone beforehand unless you want spoilers to almost every plot point in the book (I refreshed my failed memory afterwards ).Isma Pasha is in her late 20s, quiet and hard working, about to start a graduate program in the States. Her life is finally in her own hands after helping raise her much younger siblings, twins Aneeka (the headstrong beautiful one) and Parvaiz (the dangerously aimless one). Their parents are long dead, their father a jihadist, often absent through their childhood, yet still a powerful pull. The handsome son of a controversial political figure in London enters their lives, and the novel races from taut beginning to shocking end.“For girls, becoming women was inevitability; for boys, becoming men was ambition.”Shamsie is a brilliant psychological writer, and her characters inhabit class, race, and gender in varying and vivid states. The scenes are sharply and finely drawn, the dialogue precise and clever, and the plot vibrates with increasing intensity. There is a bit of hysteria and Hollywood overblown-ness towards the end, though in fairness, Greek tragedies aren't exactly understated either. Neither, for that matter, is the war on terror or the war on the west. I'm also a little over fraternal boy-girl twins being portrayed as mind-meld ESP close. One of the most powerful lessons Home Fire drove home for me was how the government programs that pursue and punish home grown radicals end up devastating their families. Isma barely knew her father, and her younger siblings never even met him, yet his jihadist life and mysterious death haunt them long after, not just psychologically, but legally, logistically, inescapably. Rifts are created within their family and community, educational and professional ambitions are disrupted, their very movement through the world thwarted. It’s terrifying to see these effects ripple through and to begin to understand how Muslim communities, and by racist conflation, people of color, are affected by Western anti-terrorism programs and policies.Home Fire is a novel for our times, stretching from family ties and community to the wider sweep of global terrorism, religion and radicalism, immigration and nativism, and what we do for love and war. The book will keep you turning pages, but moreover, its gift is its resonance, making the intimate a deeply political act, and the political honing unerringly home.

Brilliant, beautiful, and full of irony, Shamsie's story eclipses Sophocles' original. A principled young woman (Aneeka-Antigone), devoted to her erring brother (Parvaiz- Polynices), seeks to bury his body. Her practical sister (Isma-Ismene) urges moderation and compromise. Orphans of a tragic father (Pasha-Oedipus), the siblings' fates are entwined with each other, and with power politics (British animus for Muslims and Pakistanis, in Home Fire).A narcissistic, ambitious politician (Karamat-Creon) opposes the brave woman, in his pride and insecurity. Her lover (Eamonn-Haemon), the politician's son, eloquently pleads to his father on her behalf. His wife (Teresa-Eurydice) appeals to the politician's best self, his needs, and his desires. The media-chorus reflects popular judgments. Love and loyalty are compelling, in diverse relationships, but pride leads to tragedy, inevitably.Shamsie's characters are richly developed and complex - especially the sisters. The women are strong and intelligent, passionate and dignified. Social tensions and cultural conflicts deepen the reader's empathy and understanding. This book is a pleasure, in language and imagery, intellectually and emotionally.

Political strife, a family torn apart multiple times, love lost and found, and tragedy make up Kamila Shamsie’s novel HOME FIRE.Isma, the eldest sister, a devout Muslim and the head of her British family, has practically raised her younger sister Aneeka and brother Parvaiz, who are twins. Their mother and grandmother have passed away. Isma has gone away to graduate school in the States. Parvaiz has left town to supposedly travel, while Aneeka is pursuing a law degree. They know only anecdotes of their deceased jihadi father who left to fight in Afghanistan.Isma meets Eammon, the handsome son of the home secretary, once a rival of her father’s, who has denounced his Muslim background, married to a wealthy American, and worked his way up the political system. Eammon infiltrates, by accident or perhaps not, her family back in London and hooks up with the younger sister. When he tells his father of his impending plans, all hell breaks loose. This is the real world. Where ISIS is stronger than young love. Family members take sides. And politics have the upper hand in the modern world.

I have read all of Shamsie's previous books, this is probably her best work yet. She tells the stories of Pakistani immigrants, some of whom seem to be fully assimilated in British society, and others who reject the society they live in, and even work against it. But of course life is much more complicated than we see and hear it on the news, and that's what makes this novel work--it successfully highlights the complexities of human nature. What seems obvious, isn't always that obvious. The novel keeps you engaged till the end with unexpected outcomes and situations.

Review

In his search for the true face of Isaac Brock, Guy St-Denis has unraveled a mystery spanning two centuries as to which portrait accurately depicts the ‘Hero of Upper Canada,’ making this the most original study about Brock to appear in decades. - Tanya J. Grodzinski, Department of History, The Royal Military College of CanadaGuy St. Denis has a gift for putting neglected corners of History under a microscope, and revealing their forgotten but remarkable stories and casts of characters. Few stones are left unturned in this new fascinating blend of military and art history. The research is impeccable, the judgements balanced and the writing fluent and accessible. This is a master-class to be enjoyed by scholars and general readers alike. - John Sugden, author Tecumseh: A Life and Nelson: The Sword of AlbionGuy St-Denis has given us an offbeat and engaging study on the often confusing subject of Sir Isaac Brock’s portraits. There is more here than one might expect, and St-Denis’ fine research and astute detective work serve the topic well. The result is a fascinating-and definitive-treatment of the subject. - Don Hickey, author of The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict

#14,883 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Wow, where to start. Let me first say that I was waiting for this sequel like a kid at Christmas. I even pre-ordered it so I would get it as soon as it was available and then stayed up late checking my kindle until it appeared and at the risk of being exhausted at work, I stayed up and read front to back all night long. Well, the happiness I felt at 2am was long gone by the time it was 5am and I'd finished reading this book. It was nothing like its predecessor "Bared to You" which was a wonderful read with strong, mature characters who were interesting and pushed you to the point of not wanting to put the book down.I don't know who the people were who showed up in this book. Eva a sassy, strong young woman of 24 turned into a needy, whiny, weakling who phoned in her robotic performance. As for Gideon, he was an alpha male who commanded attention with a cool, dark veneer and intelligence made even more enticing by his secret past and love for Eva. But, for this book, he too phoned in his robotic performance and became a two note of sex and violence. I was looking forward to these characters fitting the original title of the book "Deeper in You" because I thought that's exactly the direction this book would take the reader but it didn't even come close. This leads me to think Ms. Day herself knew this book wasn't going anywhere and therefore changed the title to "Reflected in You" because that's exactly what large parts of this novel were, a reflection back to the most filler parts of "Bared to You." It seems this book was written under the assumption people would read it without having read the first due to all the over-telling of places, events, and secondary characters. And yes I understand the reflection part is supposed to be Eva reflected in Gideon but I hardly find that to be true given she was an open book and he was a closed one.I want to say if you decide to take on a subject such as Child Sexual Abuse or any form of abuse it should be treated in a manner that is respectful and intelligent for those out there who have really suffered from abuse. It's not something to be taken lightly and research is required before putting information out there, yes even in a fictional book. This is the problem I had with "50 Shades of Gray" along with the general bad writing and plot, but I digress. I get that Eva and Gideon are victims who have been pre-disposed due to their abuse to use sex like an addict uses drugs - when they're happy, sad, angry, bored, lonely, etc. to feel good about themselves and their relationship. But, Gideon was made to appear like he was using Eva as his sex toy and Eva was just happy he would show up to use her. The scene in the limo was the worst ever - not romantic in the least. None of the repetitive sex scenes were what I would classify as "HOT." There was so much hair fisting in every sex scene I seriously wondered if these people would show up bald in book 3. And, while I'm on repetitive, Hello- raised/arched eyebrow is the new biting lip. Geez everyone's response to anything was always a raised or arched eyebrow - I guess this means no one in the book had botox.Getting back to plot fails - I read this book twice because I really thought I was tired and it wasn't as bad as I initially thought, but it was. There was so much potential here from "Bared to You" like Eva facing her own abuser and using her Krav Maga skills to kick his a** maybe even kill him in self-defense then Gideon would have to deal with a woman who took control of her own problem while being submissive in the bedroom - that would be something I'd like to see him work with. And, that would be a true reflection of him since I think he probably killed his abuser. There are many other plot fails, but the biggest is to bring in a non-descript character to run down the Cliff Notes of what happened to Nathan and for anyone who's watched one episode of" Law & Order" knows that was a complete fail and just plain lazy writing. If you didn't want to get into the Nathan thing why even put it in the story? It did nothing except make Eva look like a desperate women and Gideon a thug - not the refine "urbane" New Yorkers they've been painted as. Not to mention the whole "event" and most of the book was predictable from chapter 2.I'm going to be completely honest and say I feel like this book was dumb downed to match in my opinion the "50 Shades" series. And if that's true then this book was written for the money and not for the art evident in I paid $3.82 for "Bared to You" and this book is $9.99. Sad being picked up by a publisher killed this series. I would not recommend.

Audible Review: This is the same narrator from books 1 and 2. Overall, a good narrator. I don't exactly enjoy her Gideon voice, but I am very picky about that and it's probably a me issue.Story Review: While I enjoy getting as much of this couple as I can get, this is my least favorite book so far.Gideon and Ava spend the whole book pretending not to be a couple. You know why because of the ending in book 2. Personal preference has me wanting to read a couple together, not separate. As one threat comes to a slow close, a new one pops up with a reporter trying to make Gideon look nasty because of her own agenda. These past women in his life are annoying and tiresome. The worst is Corrine. My biggest pet peeve about this book was Gideon is still constantly catering to Corrine. I don't doubt his love for Ava and I do not think he wants Corrine, but he needs to cut her loose. It's disrespectful to keep going to her when all she wants to do is come between Ava and him. I don't care that he feels guilty. He shouldn't. Corrine broke it off with him and she made her bed.Ava still has Brett trying to get back with her and yet I'm actually not bothered that much by it. For one, Gideon deserves to feel what that's like since he won't cut Corrine loose and two, Ava is not encouraging Brett. In fact, she has been pretty insistent to him that she is in love with Gideon and he doesn't have a chance. Should she cut ties to a friendship? Yes, but why should she if Gideon won't show her the same respect. I am usually much harder on the female in books but in this instance, I agree with her.I enjoyed the ending but I hate that when a good thing happens a bad thing follows closely behind. That can get a bit tiresome, as well. I am, however, still looking forward to book 4.

I started this series years ago and really enjoyed books 1 and 2. I do remember this book being delayed and after awhile the series became another book on my TBR. So I decided to finally get back to this series and read books 1 and 2 again, which I still love. This book, nope, nada, no!I was annoyed 95% of this book. Eva lost her appeal, Gideon was acting shady, and the secondary characters were so annoying.Eva - I don’t understand why she lets everyone step all over her. She had no backbone and is not a strong lead anymore. She lost her appeal and her “zing” in this book. The whole Brett storyline was disappointing.Gideon - while I understand why he acted the way he did, he should of communicated better with Eva. His loyalty to Corrine was just annoying and unnecessary, especially at the end.Secondary characters- Eva’s mother was always annoying but somewhat tolerable in the first two books, but for some reason, she was downright insane and dramatic for no reason. I wished Eva would’ve put her mother in her place and kept her there instead of backing off. The whole not telling her father what happened was a low blow, but to then justify why her mother kept it from him was just stupid. He’s your father!!! He should have known. If anything he probably could’ve help with her mother’s actions. Clary, was just an idiot throughout the book. He was a horrible BFF, especially his actions in the second book. He is a hot mess who has no right to give any opinion on anyone’s personal life. He annoyed me and was so ughh...If I can describe this book with one word it would be childish. Everyone in this book was a child with adult jobs. No one communicated, no one had common sense, no one respected each other, and the whole back and forth was getting old. I’m disappointed in this book and will not read/buy books 4&5. The sparks between Eva and Gideon was gone. They played this back and forth game with Brett and Corrine that the appeal of their love for one another was lost. I can’t understand why or how they can put the feelings of their ex’s before each other. Between Gideon running to Corrine, who by the way disrespected Eva on multiple occasions and then had the nerve to kiss Gideon in front of her, was a WTF moment for me. After all of that, Gideon still would run to Corrine every time she cries. Why? Over some unfounded guilt that happen years ago. Then there’s Eva and Gideon. She knows he wants her back. You would think she would decline and break all ties with him out of respect for all parties involved, but nope! She instead goes on a “date” with him, goes to an event with him and make plans to see him on a weekend - huh! I can’t with this book or the characters. This will be the first time I stopped reading a series without completion. Usually, I try to stick it out to get to the epilogue, but I don’t think it’s worth it. This series had such high hopes and ugh... failure for me. So disappointing. Okay, rant over.
