Trying to expand my world by seeking out nonfiction titles from publishers outside of the U.S. Came across this title because it made the 2019 Outstanding International Books list for USBBY.The author, Wab Kinew, is member of the indigenous group Midewin, an activist and politician, and lives in Canada. He is also musician (rap/hip hop) and you can watch him sing versions of this song on YouTube. The book references indigenous people who are "heroes" (past and present) for all communities. Some of the figures will be recognized by children (Sacagawea & Jim Thorpe), but many will not be. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce students to unfamiliar, heroic figures and ask the question that Kinew asks in his book, "You're a person who matters. So what will you do?"Some suggestions for an interactive read aloud:*find a video of Kinew singing a version of this to introduce students to the author and his music (watch in advance because there are some versions that are more appropriate than others)*read the book aloud for the joy of it*if you can, project it and ask students to read along with you; it's poetic and best read aloud*define "hero" for the students in kid-friendly terms so they can use this definition to explain and elaborate on their understanding of the text*read aloud, stopping to ask questions like---Why do you think Kinew chose this figure to include? What in the text makes you think so? What can you infer (using your prior knowledge about what it means to be a hero)?-How do Morse's illustrations support the idea that this person is heroic?-What are questions you have about this figure?-What is the role of the title "go show the world" in this book? How is this connected to Kinew's introduction to these historic figures?A lot of potential. Would be a great book for small groups to lean in and read together and discuss. Lots of room for written responses as well.Don't skip the author's note at the end. Reveals themes that are woven into text and illustrations. There are also short bios about each of the figures - worthy of reading aloud to students. This would also be a good mentor text or launch for writers in a workshop setting. What are other historic figures we can add to this book? How would you reveal their heroism in just a few lines of poetry with an illustration? PLUS Kinew, himself, is a hero--why might we think of him as a hero? How could we add him to this song?
Many people ignore the contributions to society made by the Indigenous peoples of North America. This book highlights a handful of our Indigenous heroes in a poetic easy to read format. At the end of the book there is information on each person highlighted in the book. The writing and illustration are great for any elementary age child. As an Indigenous teacher I am always looking for books about Indigenous peoples written by Indigenous authors. This book has been a great addition to our class library.
Great kids book with great illustrations.
This is an uplifting narrative of famous Indigenous heroes, people for young kids to look up to and emulate. It is a way for young people to feel good about their history and to learn about their heroes, both old and modern. This is something that young kids, especially of Indigenous descent will enjoy.
