The previous editions of "100 Classic Hikes in Northern California" set a very high standard for hiking guides covering the vast, varied, and beautiful landscapes of Northern California - and this new edition is frankly even better. The biggest improvement is the maps - gone are the flat drawings and tangled trail markings of the past, now replaced by straight-forward topographical maps with a clear route in red (with of course side trails, landmarks, roads, etc, all easy to take in at a glance). It would be nice if campsites were consistently marked (full-service campgrounds are usually depicted, others sometimes not), but they are mentioned in the text so it's not a dealbreaker. Another upgrade is the "Getting There" section with details on finding the trailhead, including GPS coordinates. An infobox contains details like 'best season to go' & elevation gain/difficulty, and accompanying trail descriptions are clear and informative. The trail selection is good too, with a varied sample across the state and a range of difficulties/distance.As good as the book is, there are a few nitpicks - it's almost crazy to complain since so many iconic trails are covered, but I do think they missed a few classics: Grizzly Lake, Devil's Punchbowl / Wilderness Falls, Snow Mountain, the Palisades, Salt Point State Park, the Independence Trail near Nevada City (that flume!), Tinker Knob, some of the other approaches on Mt Shasta. There's definitely room, since there are eight(!) variations of similar (some almost identical) lake hikes in the Desolation Wilderness, plus nearly every possible trail near Lassen seems to be included - surely those could be condensed into several of the best, then pack a few more in the "Extend Your Trip" addendums at the end of each hike (which often just mention other hikes in the chapter - yes, we can already see them on the next page and on the maps - not very helpful). Variety is good! And while it's nice there are pictures for each hike, the quality doesn't quite measure up to the high standard found in the other "100 Classic Hikes" guides. There's always room for improvement! That being said, this is a good option if you want a one-stop resource for NorCal. The binding and pages feel sturdy and high-quality, but the book is also bulkier and heavier than most - I'd probably use a copier for pages as needed. If you're from out of state and just visiting a certain area like Lake Tahoe, Lassen, Shasta, or San Francisco, I'd consider a more focused book - Falcon has reliable guides on National Parks and wildernesses, while "60 Hikes Within 60 Miles" has a good one for SF, and Moon publishes nice guides for both (the downside being no topograpical map). Hiking Northern California by Bubba Suess (what a name) is another great alternative/companion piece.

We live in the Bay Area and this beautiful, thoughtful guidebook has deepened our enjoyment of Northern California’s beauty. Gorgeous color photographs and descriptive information unveil the majesty and adventure of these trails. The book also makes a great coffee table reference for inspiring and planning what the next hike will be.Â

this book is very thick but so full of knowledges of Accounting standards. i think its gonna be fun to read it!!

Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with the style of a British textbook, but I found it very difficult to follow. The text rambles from one statement to another, with no logical flow, structure or summaries of introduction or conclusion. It's certainly a thorough treatment of the field if your interest is understanding differences in international practice, although it's not targeted at someone who wants to learn to actually perform the accounting.

International Space Station: Architecture beyond Earth

Review

This book thoroughly chronicles the history, development, engineering, habitation, design, and, finally, “architecture” of the International Space Station. Weighing 422 tonnes, the ISS is still circling the planet every 90 minutes at about 17,500 miles per hour, coequal in the author's judgment to CERN's Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. The book proceeds diligently from the 1960s to today, dividing American habitation in space into seven chapters. The ISS was constructed primarily by Russia and the United States after 1972, with contributions from Europe, Japan, Canada, Italy, and Brazil, and it still represents the most ambitious and the most complicated habitat ever conceived, contrived, and constructed by sapiens. This book culminates seven years of work by the author, embracing four valuable appendixes, more than 100 terms in the glossary, over 300 illustrations, 500-plus footnotes, and over 1,200 index terms in 400-plus pages. This heavy tome far replaces several smaller, outdated NASA paperbacks and reference guides with a much larger scope, a greater attention to detail, and a fully fashioned explanation of the complicated economics, politics, technologies, etc., of space exploration. This book definitely serves the general public. The author is a British architect who moved to California and has long specialized in the architecture and design of space exploration vehicles. Verdict Excellent for STEM education and lots of other disciplines. (Library Journal)I'm not aware of any book on the ISS that comes close to what Nixon offers here. (Inside Outer Space)

While the writing and information is well done and exciting to be able to learn, the book in general is a let down. The book is printed on cheap paper and is rough finish. The paper causes the images to be less brilliant and enjoyable. The photo layout is by far the biggest let down. Images are scaled to very small and mostly unusable images on the page. I don’t understand this as there is miles of wasted white space around the pictures which could AND SHOULD be occupied by the images. I purchased this book to assist building a scale model of the ISS. I WAS REALLY disappointed with arrived. Even the diagrams of Station development are distorted by the layouts. The drawings hold copious amounts of days but they are shoved into tiny spaces on the page. I’m not sure who edited this book. But with a new maybe less design centric layout it could be redone using the same text, photos and diagrams to produce a MUCH MUCH better and more usable book. Until then if you’re a model builder or visual person I would wait for a rewrite and do what I ended up doing. Hit the official ISS NASA Website.

great book

When we think about space exploration, most of us summon up images of rockets and astronauts in spacesuits – the hardware associated with reaching a destination. But beyond the realm of science fiction, few of us have ever thought about what that destination will look like. Even fewer have been involved in conceiving the architecture of space. The International Space Station is a building designed to be constructed beyond the confines of Earth. It is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken, but for many people it is also a home. That is what makes the Space Station – and this book – so remarkable. David Nixon tells the story of the Station’s long development in exacting detail, but he also invites us inside so that we understand it as a building – a place where astronauts from many different countries live and work together. US astronaut Nicole Stott adds another perspective – a personal memoir of what it’s like to live there – the sounds and smells and thrills of being in space.Nixon writes as an insider – one of the few architects invited to work on the Station’s design – which makes this a landmark publication. He also knows how to write, which makes exploring this book a pleasure!
