This book is appropriately titled-- Farwell's true gift is he has the gift of clarity in articulating WHY things are done, WHAT is the meaning behind it, WHY this symbol is what it is, etc. In my opinion every Episcopalian needs this book. I left the tradition because nop one ever explained to me any of the questions I had surrounding liturgy. I've come back and Farwell has helped me immensely. The liturgical piece of our tradition cannot effectively be achieved via explanation in a pamphlet or flyer. It's more complicated than that. My son is discerning a call to the priesthood; I gave him this book for his birthday.
I found the story of the Mask in the introduction to be an important concept for all Christians to understand. I used it in an Adult Formation class in my parish.The explanations of the Sacred Space, the Ritual, and Bodily Motions answers many questions that newcomers to the Episcopal Church may be hesitant to ask.I highly recommend this short but important book.
This book will serve as a faithful guide to those seeking a deeper understanding of liturgical practice, particularly in the Episcopal Church. The author, while taking a strong position on many issues, also allows for expanded possibilities, based on local custom or particular theological perspectives. I found this book not only a helpful guide but also a moving testimony to the power of Christian ceremony.
I would recommend this to anyone begging to understand what the liturgy is, how it functions, and why churches in the prayer book tradition hold so firmly to it.
Howard's original The Liturgy Explained seems more succinct and less verbose. I liked Howard's imagery of ritual because it seemed to have a more familiar tone. This book is okay but I will continue to use the older version with my newcomer classes. they can still be found though they are out of print.
