Review
"American Prep is the most comprehensive and accurate book on the American boarding school experience I have ever read. Ronald Mangravite captures the many facets of a boarding school education with remarkable clarity. Without bias or agenda, he shows why boarding schools are a powerful educational model which prepares children from all parts of society for success as adults."Thomas SheppardDean of Enrollment Management, Lawrenceville School“This book is so well-written it is ridiculous. The depth of thought that has gone into it is impressive; it is coming from a very centered place that will speak to the heart of any parent or child considering this particular road trip. I found it very moving as I reprocessed my own prep school 'career ' in parallel with reading it...The examination of school costs and financial aid support is particularly illuminating."Phil DeMuth, bestselling author, Forbes contributor, Lawrenceville alumnus“As parents who stumbled upon boarding school as a viable alternative for our daughters almost four years ago, we wish we would have had a resource such as American Prep to better prepare us for the process. The insights on parenting boarding school students are invaluable to all families considering or already in the process of sending a child to boarding school.â€Lia Yaffar-PenaSt. Timothy’s School parent“Exceptionally comprehensive, American Prep is both a good read to familiarize oneself with U.S. boarding schools and a detailed reference guide to draw on throughout the boarding school experience.â€Paul Sardina Culver Academy Alumnus and Parent“American boarding schools are NOT what you see in the movies! They have evolved into inclusive, supportive communities while continuing to deliver the sort of academic and character-based education for which they have been renowned. Through candid descriptions of life at today’s schools, and detailed road maps through the admission and financial aid process, Ronald Mangravite provokes what will be an eye-opening revelation for many people: an American boarding school education is both extremely appealing and surprisingly accessible.†Ian GraceyDean of Admission & Financial Aid, Groton School"This is a very thorough book and especially useful for international families. We have needed a book like this for decades; I wish American Prep would have available when I went to school. Read it, then keep it as a reference…a treasure trove of information!"Diego Munoz-TamayoThacher School alumnus, Choate Rosemary Hall parent, Deerfield Academy parent“If American Prep had been available to us when we started our search, the road to boarding school would have been significantly less daunting. I highly recommend reading it and referencing it throughout the process."Lisa Cloughen, Portsmouth Abbey School parent

At times a bit general, but a good primer for a family that does not have boarding school experience. I particularly thought the advice for students and parents once attending was helpful. Wish I read this a year or more ago. Although I found it informative there were times I disagreed with the advice. In addition some parts were repetitive --the book needed better editing. I bought the Kindle version and had a $1 promo from Amazon. Worth $5, but perhaps not much more.
As a grandparent trying to assist my daughter in making education choices for her children, I found this book exceptionally well written and informative. Mr. Mangravite's work is just what the title promises - an insider's guide - but it's also much more. It's a very smart, sensitive exploration of education in general. The author knows that what works for one kid won't work for all. Even if you ultimately decide that private school isn't right for you, Mr. Mangravite will have helped you to ask the right questions. As a former student, teacher, and parent of a private school student, and a very active alum, his perspective is balanced and thorough. Highly recommended.
I knew a bit about boarding schools but it was a comprehensive guide. I actually thought there would have been a list of all the boarding schools with rankings etc. similar to colleges - BUT - this does not. However, there was enough material in the content to give me a good idea about the boarding schools that the author felt was in the top ranks.
As European parents living in the U.S., we were advised to consider the boarding school option - but how does one begin? This book has been very important for us - the one source we found that helped us through the entire process. We particularly found the "boarding school basics" and the "boarding pros and cons" chapters very useful as we started to explore our options. If you are also new to this, there is a chapter where the author describes the application process in great detail with lots of useful tips and information, links to websites, etc. We now feel well prepared for the boarding adventure.
If you are even thinking about prep school -- as a parent, or as a student -- this is the one you need to read. Mangravite takes you on the whole journey and delivers a "you are there" experience.
Exceptionally specific and informative. I have friends considering prep schools for their son, and this book has been a godsend to them in helping them choose.
Very basic. We were looking for a book that had descriptions of the individual schools not a general how to apply to prep schools. It could be title "how to get into prep school for dummies."
I could not recommend this book highly enough for anyone considering boarding school for his or her child. It is incredibly insightful, both for parents & children. It provides a detailed roadmap of the boarding school process with invaluable tips as to what to do & what to avoid. My only regret is that I didn't read it earlier. It is truly an insiders guide. I applaud Ronald Mangravite for compiling such a thoughtful, insightful, comprehensive book. It is an invaluable resource. Definitely worth buying.
