I just stumbled on to John Verdon, and I'm really glad I did. This debut is well worth reading. I was surprised at the number of low reviews, but after reading a few it seems there is some confusion, lots of complaining about this "mystery" novel. Well, it's a suspense novel! Two totally different animals. There is a very intriguing puzzle to be solved by the police. Yes, I figured out the culprit ahead of them, but that's fine in suspense. Sometimes knowing who the bad guy is adds to the suspense. The point is in how they will figure it out. Will everyone survive the nightmare? How will the hero save the day? Also, the personal problems of the hero add another layer to the story that isn't included in a mystery novel. Verdon does a fantastic job of gradually revealing the complex dynamic between this married couple, and I found myself rooting for that relationship. I loved watching the hero, Dave Gurney, slowly come to realize some things about himself. Great character development. And the fact that he admits, at least to himself, that his wife is smarter than he is doesn't hurt!

Enjoyable read. I particularly like the main character Dave Gurney for numerous reasons. First, his cerebral approach is grounded. His mathematical analysis allows the reader to vicariously participate. Albeit, the author hides some of Gurney's enlightenments presumably for surprise effect. He is not perfect with a number of issues that are relatable. He possesses self scrutiny, doubt, and insecurity. His correct decisions aren't automatic. They require preemptive thought and active action. His relationship with his wife is typical and not perfect. But reasonably realistic. As far as the plot there is one major flaw. 'My dear Watson' it is elementary to any detective work that any person without a credible alibi is automatically a suspect. Dermot is the prime suspect. The mail came to his PO box. Therefore, it reasonable to assume that he is the one who initiated communication with the victims. How could Gurney ignore that possibility just because the villain claimed that he had no idea where the mail came from? And from the reader's point of view Dermot was for sure the murderer because there were no other suspects that the author bothered to develop in the story.Lastly, there were some suspenseful moments. But, the author didn't develop them. Such as the vulnerability of the Gurney's wife. The author could've created a race between the killer and Gurney to get to her. Instead, this is more of a mystery. How was the murder committed? What were the hints and the murderer's motivations? The advertisements that this book is hard to put down weren't true for me. However, it was Interesting enough to continue. So much so that I plan to read the next installment in the series.

Think of a Number is one of the best mysteries I've ever read, and Dave Gurney is one of the best detectives ever created. He's brilliant, battle-scarred, conflicted, and only sporadically self aware, but he's working on it. Verdon's portrayal of Gurney's marriage is spot-on. David and Madeleine's sniping and petty annoyances with each other are a realistic part of married life. If you don't recognize this, then you're probably headed for divorce soon. Feeling irritable toward each other isn't a deal breaker. Everyone who's in it for the long-haul experiences these day-to-day snippets of vexation. Deep and enduring love, however, lies alive and well, under the surface, emerging often, and profoundly. I'm looking forward to spending time with Dave and Madeleine, on their farm in upstate New York, in the next Dave Gurney mystery. The mystery itself, and the way Dave solves it is unique. He risks his life, and lays bare his soul, but is at the same time, methodical and patient, until he's reckless and impulsive. What a pleasure to experience his thought process and actions! The murderer is almost Dave's intellectual equal, but has a ton more hubris about it. Verdon's psycho is an eloquent and diabolical genius. He sets up each crime scene, controlling the evidence and the clues. Dave has to solve the initial, intentional conundrums, then think below the surface and try to get ahead of this monster.I'm going to order the next one right now.

This is the kind of mystery I like best -- one that is puzzle based. Unfortunately, all the puzzles were, for me, resolved before the end of the book. The final reveal wasn't a surprise since I'd reasoned it out earlier. The book is well written, however, and cannot be accused of lack of character development. The protagonist is fully realized as a flawed but engaging person. His wife is a little flatter. We see her responses to him and her effects on him, but I wish she would explain her inner self more. The puzzles in the mystery are good. I figured out the first one almost immediately, but I don't think everyone else will. I kicked myself for not figuring out the main puzzle to which the book's title alludes. Now I know the answer it is so obvious! How could I not figure it out? Maybe I was enjoying too well how the author played it out. There are lots of stupid, arrogant, realistic police, and some solid, admirable, realistic police, so you can take your pick according to your prejudice or experience. A few I wanted to smack. One I wanted to know better, and I hope, if there are further books (I haven't checked), that she will come forward as a more fully-fleshed out character. I recommend you pick this one up and enjoy it as I did.

One of the most interesting and captivating books I've read in a long long time. I love the way the author narrates his story. Oftentimes, it makes me feel so absorbed in the story that I actually look forward to my long commute (I also have the audio version). It might be a bit slow at first but if you give it time, I promise it will be worth while. I love each and every single characters and you get to know them more and more with each passing book (I am on his 4th book now). I really hope John will keep this series going and produce at least a book a year!!
