This is an impeccably researched and referenced account of the Theranos saga. As a long-time observer and sometime competitor of Theranos I watched this tale unfold whilst working at a couple of established IVD companies. Everyone I knew who had ever developed an assay or instrument knew this was smoke and mirrors, impossibly too good to be true. What I never suspected was just how personally dishonest EH had been, and for how long the complex deception was maintained. Whilst I've met a few egregious individuals working for big companies, there are enough checks and balances (QA/RA, Med/Sci Affairs, CLSs and other professionals etc) in place to stop harmful devices getting out the door.The subject matter - developing devices and assays - is a complex dry topic, difficult to write engagingly about. But JC does a workmanlike job and I read this in one go after its midnight Kindle release. My only nit to pick is the poor editing: there are so many uses of '....named....' as in 'an engineer named John Smith' or 'a restaurant named Joe's Bar' that it got irritating. Find/replace 'named' with a comma would have worked fine in most cases. The text was also repetitive - eg '...an award named after Channing...' gets at least 2 mentions. But not enough to lose a star.Kudos to the good people at Theranos who had the courage to get the story out and for JCs persistence into a headwind of legalistic intimidation. I've heard Theranos is now a case-study for MBA students: this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about 'disrupting' the medical devices industry. There are lives at stake.

I started this book and could not put it down. It's a horrifying true story of a driven entrepreneur whose only overriding goal was to become insanely rich. And she would do anything, any unimagineable thing, to get there.Elizabeth Holmes leveraged her family's high profile connections to draw in early investors and supporters, who were not very inquisitive on details, nor very skeptical in nature. Drawing on the good name and reputation of these early supporters, she was able to build an impressive roster of other supporters with stellar reputations in tech and venture capital circles. From there, it was just a matter of stage managing the house of cards she was building.Holmes crafted a Potemkin village that had fooled investors, customers, and visiting dignitaries. Her product demonstrations were outright theater, staged managed illusions worthy of David Copperfield. Theranos employees in on the ruse were assured it was just temporary, until the actual product could be perfected and the results repeatable. That day would never come. Those on the outside who also worked in this field had well founded and grave doubts about how Theranos could be touting a product that seemingly defied both logic and physics. I bought this to read with my son because it had such good reviews but I have to be honest, the cheese jokes, puns and wordplay really start to lose their appeal as the book goes onStory is fun, sort of a journalist mouse's version of treasure island. Like I said, would like it more if it laid off the cheese jokes - there were usually 2 per page at least. I get I am not the target audience but even my kid was sort of over it by the middle.The best part of the book by far is the literal text with numerous words and phrases written in special graphics and fonts - very fun way to spice up the readingOverall I think 3 stars is just about right for this book. I wonder if the series gets better as it goes on?

To be fair we aren’t finished with the book but we are 3/4 of the way through. I bought this book for my 9 year old reluctant reader. He’s reading it aloud to me and we both are so over it. We’ve pushed through because it’s been good practice but the story line is lame. I’m sure different personalities will have differing opinions but neither of us really like the book. I asked him for his rating and he gave it 3/5 but I’d give it a 2/5. This is our first and last Geronimo book. We’re trying the Time Warp Trio next.

My six year old son loves these books, and I love that he's excited about reading "chapter books." He can finish a "Magic Tree House" book in an hour, but was intimidated by or uninterested in (or a bit of both) the other chapter books I showed him. He's now read two Geronimo Stilton books, and is asking for more. Win!

Me and my daughters (3 and 6) love Geronimo and his adventures. We started with a kingdom of fantasy book and decided to start from book 1. It a book filled with lots of pictures and things to keep the kids fixated. I def. recommend this book to be added to your collection!

I read the books and then talk to the kids about it to make sure they are reading / understanding the books and they really enjoy them, pay attention and remember the story line...

I just recently found this series and I love it! The way the words are "illustrated" keep reluctant readers intrigued. It is one of the favorites in my classroom. Great read aloud series! Geronimo Stilton is a mouse who seems to be drawn to adventure and mishapes. I can't wait to read more from the crazy mouse!!!!

My son and I read this book together and we both loved it. He's nine years old and it was wonderful to be able to laugh and enjoy this book together. The story was fun and clean and just so very funny even for an adult to read. This whold series is fun to read with your kids!

I just finished reading Riaan Manser's account on his epic circumnavigation of Madagascar. The feat of paddling 5000km cannot be underestimated of course, this guy has some guts and determination most of us would dream of. On the other hand, the written account of it left me a little cold.It seems like the writer sat down after cycling through Africa and thought what can I do now that has not been done before, will test myself and put my life in danger? Sometimes it looks like he is really going after some trouble as his inexperience comes through. And he seems like he is getting a fix out of it, repeating how this and that could lead to his death.This is no trip like the ones by Tim Lydon, Brian Wilson or Chris Duff for example, where a back to the roots connection with nature is sought after. Here, Manser paddles around Madagascar while dreaming of the next satellite tv to watch rugby and a plate of spaghetti bolognaise to satisfy his appetite. The latter happens as he carries no food or water other than some Nescafe sachets and "energy juice"! He thus becomes dependent on the locals, the very people he often calls thieves or money beggars at best. He follows a routine where landings are always made at some village, trying to find some water, food and shelter (even asks for people to let him sleep in their porch!) while trying to avoid being jailed due to the political turmoil or having his stuff raided.The book is not helped by the written style either, I felt more like I was listening to the writer going through his day in day out adventures rather than writing a deeper insight on his extraordinary trip.

After reading the African bicycle adventure, this was a big dissapointment. This trip sounded more like an extended holiday than a tough adventure. Also the holier-than-thou attitude, and little life lessons are getting a bit much! Not a great read... Would not recommend it.

I know one star says I hate it, and hate may be a little to strong of a word. Disappointed may not be strong enough though either. I would say that the concept of the book left me with high hope and this "adventure" story certainly is a let down from there. I can't speak personally on Riaan Manser as I've never met him but his portrayal of himself in the book certainly makes me happy I never have. Here is someone on an expedition that most paddlers would give their eye teeth to be on yet over and over again the author seems to disregard the amazing chance he's been giving to see a part of the world in a way that few will ever get a chance to, to talk about getting to the next big village or city for a plate of spaghetti or to a TV to watch his favorite rugby team. If you want to read about a great life changing paddling experience read Chris Duff or Victoria Jason, if your interested in listening to a self indulgent author go through the motions day after day of paddling to get to the next village(where he has very little interaction with locals other then asking for food and shelter) simply to be able to be to put the "first to accomplish" stamp on this type of trip then feel free to buy this book. Its not the worst book I've ever read but certainly close to making that list. Roja Dove's splendid take on perfumery, its methods, history and mystery, is as precious to me as the perfumes I own, now that scent has become a passion second only to the novels I write. The book is equally resplendent with information to feed a perfumista's/o's mind and glorious photos for our eyes to feast upon. It begins with an explanation of smell itself, goes on to describe how perfume notes are extracted from flower, citrus, resin, etc., includes a sumptuous glossary of raw materials and explains the key aspects of perfumery. Then the history starts of great perfumes and their perfumers--stories from the birth of modern perfumery up to today--and ends with the ones Roja Dove personally created (please, God, may I have a bottle of Roja before I die?). It ends with his thoughts about the future. This book has become a prized possession. Should an emergency arise, I might well be found running from the house with my purse, a sack of fragrances, and The Essence of Perfume. Time permitting, I'll have on shoes. I can't recommend this book more highly.

I had no idea I was getting such a magnificent volume. There is everything to love about "The Essence of Perfume." It can be a coffee table book to peruse casually. The photography of the classic bottles and advertising is a delight to the eye. Some of the short descriptions of fragrances make for quick reads. Or else you can dig into the "meat" of the book -- the history of the fragrance houses, the crafts persons that created the perfumes, the structure of the various scents, and the luminaries associated with the scent or the brand. Both an artistic and scholarly achievement. And it is all splendidly and elegantly presented. It's a "keeper," and I'm delighted to add it to my library.

Wow! This is probably the most visually gorgeous book I own (and I collect beautiful books on fragrance and perfume). Even though I dearly love my Kindles, I did order this as a hardback book, and I am so glad I did. The extravagant beauty of the art and photography and the feel of the pages create an experience that is alone well worth the price of the book. That said, "The Essence of Perfume" is also a fabulous read.I highly recommend this to anyone who loves fragrance - buy the hardback. You won't regret it!

This is a wonderful volume - lavishly illustrated and well researched. Everything you ever wanted to know about scents, their history, how they are made, the array of materials used, etc. The great design houses are well profiled. For me the most fun is Dove's selection of 55 of the greatest perfumes (since 1889) with comments on their content, place in history, and importance in the art of perfumery. Color photos of the elaborate bottles accompany each profile.I have been using an online sample company and obtaining decade by decade vials of the reviewed perfumes and it is great fun. Dove is the "best nose in the business," having worked for Guerlain for 20 years, and now producing his own scent lines. His rich sensual Unspoken is my favorite of his.I have read other scholarly books on the subject and they can be rather cloying, like a heavy floral, but Dove's is breezy and easy to read. My only peeve would be he needed a better editor - there are many typos and incorrect spellings of names. Small point though.Enjoy!

This is THE BEST book on perfumes. I know the rest, I've read them all (well, almost all) in various shapes, sizes and formats:)But this one, THIS one, is second to none. As the previous reviewers have already noted, it's magnificent, splendid, gorgeous, and lavishly illustrated. And even that is an understatement. This book is ALIVE. It literally talks to you, takes you by the hand and carries you away on an amazing and incredible journey into the world of the fine art of scent. Even more than that, this book is a piece of art itself.

If you're looking for a book to give you an in depth history of perfume, how it's made and how it works on our sense of smell, this is not that book. Instead, this book is a kind of wonderful "sampler" that gives a bit of information on a variety of aspects of perfumery. Dove touchs on not only the perfumes, but also a bit of information about the houses that created them and the eras in which the perfumes were conceived. The book opens with a full-color glossary of images and descriptions of raw materials that are used to create the "notes' in perfumes as well as examples of perfume pyramids that diagram how those notes fit into a perfume's structure. Like I said before, it's not in depth, but it is written in such a way that it makes sense to anyone who is just starting to want to understand how perfumes are structured. Next it moves on to explain the various perfume categories or "families", like florals, orientals, chypres, etc. After that he moves into information on some of the ground-breaking classic perfumes by Coty, Guerlain and others, followed by descriptions of eras (the 1920's, 1930's, etc.) and the perfumes that were introduced in those time frames as well as some background information on the people like Christian Dior or Estee Lauder who brought you those scents. The book closes with unbelieveably gorgeous examples of vintage perfume bottles from a time when the bottle was as important as the scent that it held.This book is a visual treat and a nice addition to the collection of anyone who studies and collects scents or perfume bottles.

Absolutely beautiful full color coffee table book packed with insider info. Printed on heavy paper, this effort is exactly what I would expect from a consummate professional nose like Mr Dove. Very informative sections on natural ingredients, the classic perfumes and the people behind them. Top notch.

A well-written biography of Mary Jones (Mother Jones) that is an honest account of her early life, as best as it could be pieced together, and her life as an activist in the U.S. labor movement. Author Gorn honestly points out many of the exaggerations and embellishments from Mother Jones's autobiography. However, Gorn's overall assessment is a complimentary account of an amazing woman rising to recognition during a time when American women had very little power and opposition to women suffrage was rampant. Very much worth the read.

Way too much detail about unions, too little known about Mother Jones herself

Gorn brings history to life with this one. I read it while riding the train to work back and forth every day for a week and was transported to the turn of the last century. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to know more about Mary Harris Jones and her life and times. I would highly recommend this book for history nerds like me.

This book was assigned as a text for a 21st Century Movements in History course but I couldn't put it down. It is expertly written, easy to follow and great as a resource text. Mother Jones is the labor movement and the protector of children. I only wish more schools would teach about great leaders such as Mary Harris Jones.

Instead of wishing the negative chatter away, we just need to learn to turn it down a few notches so that we can instead hear God's voice above all.The author offers suggestions on how we can do this as well as his own personal experiences of his own negative internal chatterbox.I enjoyed this book because I have trouble with my own internal chatterbox. Mine likes to ruminate on past conversations and it also worries about things I cannot control. This was a hard book for me, because it really hit me right where I needed it to. The book is all about the voices we listen to - in our head, in our heart... and how we often (far TOO often!) listen to the wrong ones. I think girls are especially susceptible to this, but I'm sure guys do it too! The author tell us that "this book is built on four confessions... meant to function like noise-cancelling headphones for your mind, heart, and soul." He goes on to tell us that they are:Confession 1: God says I am.Confession 2: God says He will.Confession 3: God says He has.Confession 4: God says I can.While these four confessions seem simple, even simplistic, they are each true. There is Scripture to back each one of them up. And they each have power. But they aren't going to change our lives unless we believe them, and trust that God is who He says He is, He will do what He says He will, and I am never going to be alone because He's always with me. That is incredibly powerful!The book goes into great detail about each of these, and expounds on why the confessions are important, but also why the thought behind each of them is important. He does a fantastic job making it seem like anyone can learn to move past that inner voice, the voice that is NOT the voice of God talking to us, but a voice that is only speaking things to make us doubt ourselves, and to doubt God too. The author makes it clear that while there's no way to completely be rid of the chatterbox, there are ways to help silence it. As someone who has a very noisy chatterbox (and is also a chatterbox herserlf, ha ha!), I really appreciated the way things were presented in this book. Nothing that was shared was earth-shattering, but it was good, sound advice with practical ways to change how you look at things. It's important for us to understand that we're not supposed to listen to the chatterbox - we're supposed to listen to the still, small voice of the Lord. He doesn't talk to us to confuse us, and when we're feeling conflicted about something, it's highly likely we've been listening to the chatterbox!At the end of the book, the author gives you the website for this book - [...] - and invites readers to visit the site, click on "Calling all Chatterboxers" and find all sorts of additional information. I went and checked it out, and while I couldn't find that link to click on, I did find some great video clips of interviews with people I know from other books and studies. They included: Dr. Henry Cloud, Shaunti Feldhahn, Christine Caine, and Mandisa (among others!). He bases his assertions on personal experiences, experiences in the lives of his church members, and on biblical examples such as Joshua (the basis for the title to the book). This is the first book that I’ve read by Furtick, but I am very familiar with him. I listen to the Elevation Church podcast regularly and I thoroughly enjoy Steven’s heart and passion as a speaker. He’s absolutely one of the most gifted presenters that I’ve ever heard. He’s also involved in their worship ministry and has written or co-written several of the more popular worship songs that have come out of the Elevation worship group.Furtick’s book opens strong. The begining of the book is filled with highlighter-worthy quotes that will leave you pondering them long after you’ve moved on to the next chapter. There is no shortage of bulletin board one liners here. Two of my favorite ones were:“….if you ever encounter a theology that doesn’t directly connect the greatness of God with your potential to do great things on his behalf, it’s not biblical theology. File it under Heresy.”And“if the size of your vision for your life isn’t intimidating to you, there’s a good chance it’s insulting to God.”These are powerful and profound statements and Furtick excels at this, not just in this book but also while he’s preaching. It’s one of the things that make him so exciting and engaging to listen to. My issue with the book is that it seems to me that Furtick had a really great idea and point, but didn’t really have enough material to fill an entire book. This would have made a great Sunday morning sermon (and probably did). It would have made a great little set of worksheets for a small group bible study (and probably did). But I can’t help but feel like it falls short as a book. There is too much unnecessary “filler” material and repeating of points to get the book long enough to call it a book. Where in the beginning I was soaking up every line and enjoying the encouragement and fresh perspective, through the middle I found myself reading just to finish the book.Another area that I think Furtick excels at in his speaking but might have fallen a little short in this book is in his way of using his language choices to relate to people. The book opens with Furtick talking about how amazed he is that Elevation church held a worship service in the same arena where he had seen the band U2 play a couple of years before. Later on he makes some cultural references to things (such as Nintendo’s WII video game system). Even in the write up blurb for the book on the Amazon home page, two statements he makes about the book are: “This book is not a Snuggie”. “The words on these pages will not go down like Ambien”. And while all of those references make perfect sense to me and anyone else reading the book today, I just wonder if it will affect the potential longevity of the book as far as potential future readers are concerned. I recently read a book by the late D.L Moody. The book was written before 1900, and yet it was as fresh and powerful for me as it was for people the day it was published. I just have to wonder if Furtick’s choice of examples, phrases, and word choices will hinder future generations from being able to connect with it.I think some of the book is excellent. I think more of the book is pretty good. But unfortunately I think a lot of the book is just ok and kinda rambles on. I still love listening to Furtick and I would read him again, and while I think there were some excellent points made in the book, I think overall this one is just OK. I give it three out of five.
