This is the first in a series about thirteen year old fraternal twins, Bryce and Ashley. In this first book, we learn their backstory. Their father died in a plane crash while their mother was pregnant with their younger brother, Dylan. Since then, they've moved from Illinois to Colorado, their mother re-married, and they became Christians. This is a fast-paced book which has the usual tribulations that tweens experience as well as a mystery that seems to follow them. I have to say that this book does end on a shocking cliffhanger so be prepared to want to read book two Stolen Secrets (Red Rock Mysteries Book 2)!

Seem real to me and kept my attention.A mom and her three kids move to colorado. She is a writer and has a new husband.Her first husband was killed in a plane crash. She was pregnant with thier third childat the time. The oldest are twins.Ashley and Bryce Timberline they are 13.They now have a older step sister and a new stepfather.Thier is a bully at school that is threatening them. He wants to take their 4 wheelersthat they ride to school each day.They go with thier stepdad for a weekend getaway to see some of Colorado history and to bond. When a musuem gets robbed the day they are thier.It gets dramatic but in a good way. I will read more books like this.Good and clean book can be read by anyone2005 PUB Tyndale House Publisher

The man returns and after a harrowing fight and flight scene, leaves the family for dead after ramming their vehicle into a frigid lake where it sinks with all onboard. How will they escape? The authors artfully weave a strong spiritual thread with adjusting to a blended family and real life middle school “situations” into this high action, page turning suspense.

The dual narrative is a neat feature, but it causes really short chapters. The narrative itself isn't bad. The story isn't wrapped up neatly with this book, though, you need to keep reading in the series (I assume, I've only read this first book) for some details to be concluded. There is definitely a cliff hanger at the end of the book that will probably floor kids, but about which adults will likely be able to take some decent guesses. Overall, I recommend.

My son is 9 years old, has ADHD and a hard time reading. He got a kindle for Christmas in hopes to help with his reading. As I was searching for books to download on Amazon I couldn't seem to find any he was interested in until I found the Red Rock Mystery books!! We listen to Family Life Radio and hear these stories at 7 pm eastern time and you just can't help, but to get sucked in to the mysterious events that go on in the stories. Even my 4 year old daughter loves to listen to them. So when I found the books I was so excited to see they were just as interesting as the ones on the radio. It puts you on your toes, making you not want to put your kindle down and just keep reading. My son loves to read it and can't just read 1 chapter, but ends up reading 4 or more! So happy we found these and we'll definitely be buying more.

Cucumber PicklesView larger Cucumber Pickles Pickled cucumbers, or simply “pickles,” are a quintessential fermented food. The first record of pickles comes from ancient Mesopotamia. Such diverse historical figures as Aristotle, Julius Caesar, Shakespeare, Amerigo Vespucci, and Thomas Jefferson are reported to have been fond of pickles. Indeed, Amerigo Vespucci, after whom America was named, was a pickle vendor before he became a world explorer. Pickles play a significant role in the food culture of many countries, from North America through Europe and into the Middle East. Preparation: 1. ) If your cucumbers are at all soft, if you bought them at the store, and/or if you suspect that they might have been picked a while ago, you can perk them up by soaking them in ice water. 2. ) Trim the blossom ends off your cucumbers. These ends contain enzymes that can contribute to “hollow pickle syndrome. ” 3. ) Combine the chlorine-free water and salt in the pitcher, and add any starter or vinegar, if using. 4. ) Place the seasonings and tannin providers at the bottom of the jar or crock, followed by the cucumbers. 5. ) Pour the brine into the crock. 6. ) Weight everything down in such a way that it stays submerged. 7. ) If needed, cover the top of the jar or crock with the cloth, and affix the cloth with the rubber band. 8. ) Store at cool room temperature. I had purchased other Fermenting books before I bought this one. I should have started out with this one instead. Cover many types of foods, vegetable, milk meat etc. The best thing is that he explains what started to use and why. Also has some good recipes that don’t take much time but give good results. If you are starting with Fermentation, I would recommend this book. You might save money by not buying other books that really don’t explain what you need to know.

This is a fabulous book; I'm loving it so far! The author does a great job of taking the "scary" out of fermentation. He also does a great job offering non-mainstream information without being militant about food choices. (Not that anyone reading a book about fermentation is likely to disagree with him, but still...he's tactful, not pushy.)One of my favorite things about this book is the almost step-by-step development of it. Ferments are divided into several larger categories (like fermented vegetables vs. fermented dairy). Beyond that, though, the entire book is set up roughly from easiest or simplest to the most complicated, with chapters building on each other. That makes this a great book to work through in order (more-or-less), ferment by ferment, as a sort of textbook to learn the processes. I haven't gotten very far in terms of actually completing the recipes -- only to sauerkraut, which is first -- but that's the plan and I'm feeling more confident about learning with this book than others I've read.I would have liked to see a "what do I do when...?" section, because I did run into some issues while preparing my kraut. None of them were major, but I was thankful I had some people to ask, because I would otherwise have found myself a little "stuck." Most notably, he doesn't address (unless I missed it) how to get your food to stay under the surface of the liquid. As this is something I have consistently had difficulty with when making any preparations that involve leaving vegetable matter to sit submerged in fluid for a while, I doubt I'm the only beginner likely to run into this, and I wish he had tackled it.Still, I'm pretty excited about this book and it's beautiful step-by-step recipe photos, and would highly recommend it for beginners like me.

I am only on chapter 2 and although the information by the end of the book may be valuable, I felt compelled to inform potential buyers of one thing .... it is very wordy. I'm finding the book cumbersome to read because the author is very conversational and talks about making our own food and taking control "especially at a time in history when many of us feel at the mercy of events, governments, corporations, and industrial food producers." I'm more of a 'just the facts' type of person. I want to learn about fermenting, not sit by a fireside drinking wine and having a leisurely philosophical discussion about it. I have already ordered a different book hoping for information that gets to the point faster.

After spending the last couple of years making drinks that go fizz, it was time for me to turn my attention to foods that go fizz... in a good way.I already had a couple of fermentation books (Art of Fermentation, Cultured Food Life), but once I got this one it quickly became the only one I turned to. At any one time I usually have at least three of the recipes contained herein bubbling/festering away. (Currently Carolina slaw, crème fraîche and yogurt.)The pictures are clear, the explanations are thorough, and everything's shown and explained so well you can't wait to just do something - provided the ingredients are on-hand, of course. And most importantly the results are great! (Or in internet-speak, nomnomnom.)One of my dogs even liked this book - so much so that he took it off the bookshelf and consumed half the introduction while I was out one day. It's that good of a book that although the recipes are still all intact, I'm considering buying it again so I have a pristine copy to be able to leaf through and mull what to try next.

I just made my first jar of Sauerkraut and it was great. This is so amazing for two reasons.. one I never ever cook and two, I used to hate store bought sauerkraut. This is a well written easy read with great photos to help you though your first batches of fermentating stuff. lol. They gave me ideas on equipment (minimal but important to have the right stuff), then the recipes were drop dead simple and yet really really taste. I feel like a kitchen star! This book would make a great present for anyone interested in making their own Real food.

I checked this book out from the library and liked it so well that I bought myself a copy of it. It clearly explains how food fermentation works and includes recipes to follow. It gives you enough background information that you aren't just following the recipes, but are fully understanding how they work. I particularly like that it explains how you can adapt recipes to suit your own needs. Most cookbooks want you to use their recipes exactly, but this author encourages you to change them in ways that please you. The recipes are easy to follow and modify. They include full-color photographs of the steps so you can see what you should be doing instead of just reading about it. With it, I was able to make my own yogurt, strain it, and use the strained whey to start my own fermented vegetables. I am very happy with this book.

Second book to the series, enjoyed alot. Don't want to give too much away but will say you won't be disappointed.

I was very taken with this installment. I mean, I love Sandra's work, but this one really sinched it. I followed along the characters journey as they met with what seem to them as insurmountable problems. The characters were so realistic and believable. The scenes were so vividly described, they came to life before my eyes. One great read after another isn't at all bad when I get the benefits of enjoying such a smooth flowing storyline. The personalities of the characters were in stark contrast and you worry what's going to happen now. Unexpected surprises with twists and turns that you weren't sure what would happen next. The characters and scenes were intriguing and so life like that it was easy to lose myself in it. I was captivated from the start. My total focus and attention was on the pages. I couldn't put it down until the very last word. I had to read it again. I couldn't help myself. I love to sink into a good read. That's what we read for and this is one I can't get enough of. I highly recommend this read to everyone. Sandra did a phenomenal job bringing this tale together beautifully. Great job Sandra and thanks for sharing.I received an ARC copy for this story.

5 starsI received a free copy of The Jealous Husband by Sandra Becker and this review was given freely.The Jealous Husband takes place two years after The anxious Bride and contains the multiple challenges faced by Miriam and David, the changes in the still bitter and vindictive Abram, and Heather's relationship trials with Samuel as he works in the outside community. There is a lot of drama, jealousy, some misunderstandings and heartbreak, but ultimately the ending is a happy one full of forgiveness and love.

This second book in the series brings crises, discouragement and difficult problems to all the main characters. But sometimes, crises are needed to move people into new places or ways of thinking. It was satisfying to watch the six couples move beyond their problems, finding solutions that brought forgiveness, repentance, peace and love. I loved The Anxious Bride, and can't wait to read The Worried Mother.

Good read although husband acted very immature most of the book. As the second twin he had always been in his brother's shadow. Although he got the lady he was not secure in his position.I enjoy the books I have read by Sandra Becker.

Sure, I don't spend hours and hours looking at magazines or watching dirty videos anymore, but I do have a battle going on in my mind on a daily basis to look at women lustfully.I really am thankful to the author for the tips he has shared in this book which have helped him overcome sexual battles he is faced with on a daily basis, as all of us Christian men are faced with them. I have already begun to use some of the ideas in this book to my success in overcoming my problem with lust. I think that the main thing I've drawn from this book so far is the importance of staying connected to God on a daily basis. The author talks a lot about not giving up and always seeking the Lord's help in times of struggle and temptation.This book is filled with excellent scriptures, sound advice and good techniques for winning the battle that Christian men face. I believe it's a must read for every Christian man, young or old.

About the Author

Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered. wow this volume was amazing, it's taken me a couple of issues to get used to this new artists style and while i do miss Guy Davis, i feel like this is the first volume where i finally got completely on board with the new artist.i won't spoil any of the story for you just know it's amazing and wraps up some lose ends from the past, and has without question the most BRUTAL fight scene in any hellboy comic

I wish BPRD as a whole would get a bit more, idk, flashy i guess.They have a nice universe but in comparison to Hellboy I never feel like they get any storylines really done.Johann Krauss is my fave so this one did stand out to me, I'm so glad they delve into him more these days

Even though I miss Guy Davis' art - this artist is great and I will make the adjustment I'm sure. All of the Hellboy family of comics are great fun and this collection carries on that tradition.

Mike Mignola has been an "artists' artist" since he first blew everyone away in the mid-late eighties, emerging from behind a Walt Simonson/Jack Kirby fusion with his now unmistakable atmospheric and angular chiaroscuro style. Just as he was becoming one of the biggest names in comics, with books like the 'prestige' format 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight' tailor-made to showcase his brilliance and originality, he decided to jump ship. Leaving superheroes and the 'big two' for the creative freedom of Dark Horse, he joined Frank Miller and John Byrne as part of the 'Legend' imprint of creator-owned titles. When 'Hellboy' debuted, the strength of the art obscured the insecurities Mignola felt as a writer. The first mini-series, 'Seed of Destruction', was scripted by John Byrne, but 'Wake the Devil' saw a rapid development in his abilities as a storyteller, as he broke free of the assembly-line mind-set that reinforces a distinction between writers and artists at Marvel and DC. His honesty and utter lack of pretention has always been admirable, and from the start he explained 'Hellboy' as a vehicle for his obsessions with pulp fiction and gothic horror, with a reckless approach to plotting that was often decided by an urge to draw a giant ape with bolts in its neck (for example).The scope and complexity of the 'Mignolaverse' grew exponentially when the BPRD and Hellboy went their separate ways. John Arcudi took the 'Plague of Frogs' storyline in exciting and always unpredictable directions, and Guy Davis emerged as a singular artistic force, with Eisner awards confirming the critical and popular acclaim he so richly deserved. When Mignola chose Davis as artist on the first 'Plague of Frogs' arc, he was best known for his run on the Vertigo series 'Sandman Mystery Theatre', which was not the best representation of his abilities. Given their seemingly opposing artistic styles, it is a testament to Mignola's judgement that he saw the potential in Davis, who is now considered the most imaginative monster artists ever, perhaps even better than Mignola himself. The Hellboy and BPRD books have become the most reliably entertaining and artistically brilliant titles on the shelf, using a combination of respected veterans and gifted newcomers: Richard Corben, John Severin, Duncan Fegredo, Ryan Sook, Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon, Paul Azaceta, Jason Shawn Alexander, Peter Snejbjerg, Ben Stenbeck, Sebastian & Max Fiumara, Scott Hampton, Kevin Nowlan, Jason Latour... and so on. Pound for pound, Hellboy, BPRD, Abe Sapien, Witchfinder, Baltimore and Lobster Johnson have the best art in mainstream comics.With Volume 4 of the 'Hell on Earth' storyline, the reader gets two entertaining tales, smaller in scope, that serve to develop newer characters and resolve one of the original series best narrative threads. With Guy Davis gone, Mignola's unerring eye for talent is proven once more, with two exceptional new artists who each put their skill to the test on their respective stories. 'The Devil's Engine' is illustrated by Tyler Crook, who has a style similar enough to Guy Davis' pencils and inks to keep the unique look of BPRD intact, but uses a flawless European 'ligne claire' that contrasts with the sketchier, suggestive rendering of his predecessor. 'The Devil's Engine' begins with Agent Devon trying to escort the teenaged danger-detector Fenix back to BPRD headquarters. What promises to be an aggravating train-ride with a hostile girl who may or may not have useful premonitory powers, soon turns into a nightmare. After she freaks out and leaps from the moving train, Devon is forced to follow. She provides all the proof he needs of 'useful abilities' when the train crashes violently into a deep crater, killing the passengers. Their close call provides little relief, however; terrifying Hammerheaded monstrosities force them to seek refuge in an overturned trailer. Their desparate battle for survival makes for an exciting tale, and Crook proves himself to be among the very best artists in comics.Both of the stories in this softcover collection are great, but it is 'The Long Death' that steals the show. Johann heads north to find his former boss, Ben Daimio, whose shocking secret about his mysterious death and rebirth in South America resulted in the massacre of several BPRD agents. It also destroyed the colossal human body that Krauss had been able to inhabit, living once more as a human, instead of a vaporous ectoplasm in a containment suit. When the Jaguar-god that has possessed Daimio faces off against Daryl, the Wendigo, it is one of the best issues of the year. The writing is excellent, but the art of James Harren is truly something special. He renders the violence between two legendary creatures with an exaggerated style that is stunning; this three-issue mini-series put the comic-world on notice -- James Harren is a f***ing superstar. It's a fun read all around, but the art alone is worth the price-tag.

"The Long Death" was definitely my favourite of the two 3-issue stories collected in this volume. Johann leads a team of agents to British Columbia to investigate a spate of bloody killings carried out by a were-jaguar and former BPRD colleague, Daimio. But Johann goes prepared to stop Daimio's bloody rampage once and for all.As good as the story is, the artist James Harren deserves special mention for his outstanding work, drawing what is one of the goriest BPRD stories I've read in a good while. He draws the Wendigo amazingly too, giving him this profound sadness in his silent panels, and the Wendigo's close-up expression on his face before fighting the were-jaguar? Extraordinary. The background art is beautiful too, he really captures the stillness and eeriness of the snowy woods at night perfectly.There is a massive fight between Wendigo and were-jaguar in this story that I didn't expect to be as epic as it was but Harren does a marvellous job with the action. The characters move on the page and I loved how Wendigo's movements seemed believable despite his figure being wholly unreal.Not that "The Devil's Engine" is bad, it just isn't as inspired as "The Long Death". In this one Agent Devon is escorting Fenix and her dog, Bruiser, back to BPRD HQ but finds trouble when their train derails and some kind of spider monsters chase them in the middle of a desert. It's a testament to Mike Mignola and John Arcudi's storytelling abilities that they're able to take 2 characters, Johann Krauss and Agent Devon, who, when the series started out, were solely background characters but are now the leads of a book - and you care about them as much as you would if it were Hellboy and Abe in their roles. Johann especially is becoming more and more likeable.Duncan Fegredo who draws the covers for all the issues has to be mentioned. He is simply the best. Each one of those covers blew me away. He takes Mignola and his team's outlandish monster creations and turns them into things of utter beauty. That first cover of "The Long Death" where Johann is walking in the woods is wonderful as is the cover of the second issue to "The Devil's Engine" with the careening lorry with the monstrosity atop it, and when Dave Stewart's colouring them? Comic book nirvana. I wish these two would draw everything Mignola wrote, they are an unbeatable artistic duo.This is an excellent fourth volume in the "Hell on Earth" series proving that Mignola only gets better with age. I don't know where it's going but Mike Mignola's creating a helluva comics tapestry with all of his books that are swelling literally into the dozens and seem to overlap in the most brilliant ways. I re-read "BPRD, Volume 6: The Universal Machine" recently because I love that book but it turned out to be fortuitous as the Wendigo character in Abe's story from that book reappears for the first time since then in "The Long Death". Also, if you want to get the most out of this story, check out "BPRD, Volume 8: Killing Ground" to find out who this Daimio chap is and how he came to be a were-jaguar. You can still enjoy this book without reading either book but "The Universal Machine" is seriously one of the best books Mignola's ever written so it's well worth checking out. Nobody else is doing monster comics this good - can't wait to read more in this brilliant series!

This it has done -- and this it continues to do.As the Chairman of the editorial committee presiding over this new edition, Mr Justice Longstaff notes in the introduction that ‘the approach since the first edition of these Guidelines … has been to reflect and categorise the awards (that) courts were actually making as to where the members of the committee felt they ought to be.’This, he adds ‘remains the prerogative of the courts.’ He therefore urges readers to remember that ‘this is a book of guidelines, not of tramlines.’ The result nonetheless, is the presentation within a clear, precise format, of a framework by which damages in personal injury cases can be logically assessed based primarily on previous judgments, although it is pointed out that no two cases can ever be alike.The figures updated for this new edition reflect the awards made by the courts in 2013, plus increases that reflect the pace of inflation since then, at a rate of 3.4%, to include the decisions of the higher courts on quantum. These figures incorporate the 10% uplift in general damages recommended by Sir Rupert Jackson and are presented in emboldened type. The “pre-uplift” figures, by way of comparison, are listed in plain text.There is a considerable amount of new material in this new edition. For example, head injuries, as distinct from brain injuries, are discussed in chapter three and there is increased emphasis on such areas as minor injuries, ectopic pregnancy and mental anguish.As all judges involved in hearing personal injury cases will automatically receive a copy of this book, it would seem obvious that no personal injury lawyer should be without it.
