About the Author

Fulton Oursler (born Charles Fulton Oursler) was an American journalist, editor, and writer. He was a notable author of mysteries and detective fiction under the name Anthony Abbot. In the 1920s he aided Harry Houdini in his crusade against fraudulent mediumship. After touring the Middle East in 1935, Oursler became very interested in religion and Christian ethics in particular. In 1943 he and his family converted to Roman Catholicism. Some of his books include Spirit Mediums Exposed, A Skeptic in the Holy Land, The Precious Secret, Father Flanagan of Boys Town, The Greatest Story Ever Told: A Tale of the Greatest Life Ever Lived, and Lights Along the Shore. I missed reading the "Greatest" books years ago when they first came out. Too busy with kids and job. Recently I have been going to to read a lot of books I missed. this one is just so fulfilling. Few of us are historians of any achievement, and it is difficult to appreciate the life of Christ without a context in which to view it. Putting all of the events of his life in a chronological sequence set within the history and culture of his time makes his life so much more real to the reader. For the layman this is truly a gift. I do wish I had ready it much earlier in my lifetime, but better late than never. I will surely read the rest of the trilogy.

This is a straight forward re-telling of the story of the gospel in a novel-like form. Oursler takes no liberties with the gospel message, but he does add some color to the story with historical details about the way people lived at the time. The types of housing, the food they ate, their modes of travel and even the details of Mary and Joseph’s romance give more substance and connection to the life of Jesus.I enjoyed the book very much, especially reading the story of Jesus’s birth at Christmas time as I was. Written in the 1940s there are some phrases that seemed racist, and some caricature characters that were unnecessary, but overall the message is heartfelt.

Wow, that was some story. There was a part about 40 pages from the end that I stopped, I knew how it ended and I didn't want to read that, but I did. When Jesus was arrested in the garden and then when Peter denied him, I cried a little. Humankind hasn't come very far have we?

I can't put it down! Excellent story of the life of Jesus and filled with historical facts told in form of an exciting novel! Great for someone who finds the Bible hard to read and follow. I purchased for a family member who said she didn't want to read all the biblical who begot who!

If yo have never read the bible and want to get an idea in story form, this is a great book to help you understand the bible.

This book and the other two that are in the trilogy are really wonderful. If you want to read the Bible in a language you really understand that isnot a fiction novel read this. Mary, Joseph and Jesus come alive on the pages. It firmly keeps true to the bible event by event. To use a pun ; it's the gospel truth. I recently bought this for the fourth time! Over the years, people borrow it and I NEVER seem to get it back. You will reread this over and over and somehow find your beliefs to be stronger.

I didn't realize I was getting an original discolored copy. I was still able to read it. Good price and quick delivery.

At first, I read the reviews and thought it would be suitable for a younger toddler (not school aged) and then when it came home, I realized this book might be a little advanced for a younger reader ( mine is 3). Little boys especially, may be interested in space but they also have short attention spans and anything more than a sentence or two will not keep young toddlers interested the way a shorter, more kid-friendly book would. My toddler gets tired of the words halfway through and just turns the pages and looks at the pictures. And that is how he "reads" the book.Despite the wordy and somewhat grown-up-level references ( theres a page that talks about how constellations were named etc. Irrelevant.) the book seems to be a favorite of my sons right now, particularly because we've introduced him to astronomy. I always loved having space and astronomy material growing up and I can only speak for myself as I was a child and I preferred more pictures and facts in my books.Little children tend to want interesting stories or a challenge (think puzzles or hands -on approach) to keep them interested. This book did not have a story nor was it a picture book. Nonetheless, it is a good book to teach about space but it will require more involvement in order to teach your child about what really is "out" there.The pictures are kid friendly but they tend to lean more towards a page layout of space with some pictures relevant to the words written. If you are looking for a richer book with many many pictures of planets, black holes, etc then this is not it. It is somewhat boring for a toddler as far as activity level and captivating pictures go.But for the price, it cant be beat. Especially with the knowledge that is given throughout the pages.If you have a toddler that will sit still (mine wont.ever) or you have an inquisitive older toddler this is perfect.Nonetheless, it is a good book to have in your childs space library.

Great book for a preschooler. Though there may be too much to read through in one sitting for some children, it can be read through in pieces. It is age appropriate and includes a few details for each idea. The simple illustrations are done through attractive collage work; their straightforward design makes the book very clear and accessible. A young child can get a solid foundation in Space basics from this book.

This book was written by an adult who knows a lot, but doesn't dumb it down for kids. My almost 3 year old is obsessed with space and loves this book. He asks me to read "What's Out There? A book about space" nearly nightly. He prefers this to his space fiction books. He now points into the sky to show me the gibbous moon. What more could a mother ask for?

My first-grader found other books on the solar system more interesting last year, but now that he can read, he really likes this one. He knows more about space than I do and has something new to tell me whenever he comes over and sits down with this book for half an hour. And that's exactly why I bought it. Nice illustrations, short, succinct text. Not every first-grader can read, but I'd recommend it to third graders for sure.

This is a very informative book. It doesn't present the subject matter in a super exciting or super flashy manner, but it did teach my four-and-a-half--year-old twins a lot about our planet's place in the solar system and held their attention quite well. One of my kids kept asking me "Why?" at various times during the book, based upon a sentence I had just read to her, and the very next sentence always answered her question. That tells me that the book is interesting enough to hold their attention and laid out well enough to immediately respond to a child's questions raised by the material.

Our three year old grandson is fascinated with space and has memorized all the planets, He has been fascinated with this book and asked that it be read to him several times. This is a well written, highly educational book for an inquisitive three year old. Both text and illustrations made the book a success with him. Highly recommended!

My 5-year-old loves this book -- he read it constantly for a few weeks. It has plenty of information to be fascinating to him, but the language is appropriate and concepts are explained well but in a concise way. I was surprised that it was so small when it arrived (didn't pay attention to dimensions), but it was very well worth buying.

If you've got a youngster that is into outer space, this is a great book to help explain some of the introductory and intermediate questions your kid will have in an entertaining format. There's a good amount of information covering a broad spectrum of topics, from the phases of the moon to why the sun "sets" and the composition of the planets. Cool artwork, my son loves this book and has learned the names of all the planets but he sorta fades out for the second half of the book, I think it's targeted towards a bit older child. It gets into some of the different aspects of our space missions, and planet composition which he's not quite ready for.

Not that her other books aren't good, it's just that some are better than others. This one definitely stands out. It starts with Dr. Isles who heads to a pathologist conference in Wyoming. There, she met up with an old college buddy, his daughter and his friends. When their car brakes down in a mountain, the group takes refuge in one of many abandoned cabins. Little by little Maura and the group find clues suggesting that something had went terribly wrong. Homes and vehicles were abandoned; windows were left open and food left waiting on the table to freeze. At the climax of the story, it almost becomes a completely different monster. It becomes focused on cults and corruption. The first half of the story is focused on fear and survival, key elements of a good horror story. The story always remains suspenseful until the very end(and I mean that). There is a shocking revelation waiting behind every other chapter. There is also a lot going on in Maura's personal life and by the end she will have to make a decision that will greatly affect her love life. This is one book in the series that you must not miss out on. Personally, I felt that the focus on mythology in The Mephisto Club and archaeology in The Keepsake nearly over-shadowed the plot of those books. But Ice Cold starts off like a really good and realistic horror movie and then turns into a manhunt. I prefer this one over the last two titles in the series and I strongly recommend it.

How will a ski trip turn into a life and death situation? Why does everyone back in Boston believe that Maura is dead? How will Jane Rizzoli convince the authorities to keep searching? And what will Jane, and then Maura, uncover about the mysterious happenings at Kingdom Come?I was on the edge of my seat as the suspense built rapidly, and at every turn, a new threat would present itself. I rooted for Maura, and even as danger mounted, the author offered a glimpse of Jane and her husband, Gabriel, an FBI agent, working to follow the clues and discover what had happened to her. There were several realistic characters who played a part in what unfolded in this story, including a young teenager who helped Maura, and a ferocious social worker who turned out to have a surprising history. This was my first read from the series, but I’ll be back for more. 4.5 stars.

I loved this book...it's hard for me to give anything 5 stars, but 4 stars for "I liked it" didn't seem right! First of all, I'm a fan of the TV series, so I enjoyed knowing and visualizing the characters. It started out slowly for me. I thought Maura was going to be whiny and wasn't prepared for her seemingly hang-dog attitude. Maybe that was how she started on the show and I may have missed those first episodes. I also LOVED the fact that Rizzoli was happily married with a child and still the Rizzoli I have come to know and love.Once you get to the crux of the book, things just kept happening and I couldn't put it down. It was fast-paced and a very enjoyable read. I use books like this to escape, to experience something emotional and just to enjoy...it's not necessary for me to learn or read what some folks calI IMPORTANT BOOKS all the time. If you're looking for a little escapism and excitement and can't-wait-to-find-out-what-happens-next reading, this book is for you! If, as some others say, this is the 'weakest book of the series,' I can't wait to read more from Tess Gerritsen...I'm so excited to find a new author who already has several books for me to read. It's the best present EVER!

Having been a fan of the TV series for a couple of years, I finally decided to read a book from the author that spawned it. Tess is an excellent write of cop fiction. The the TV show is not really too close to the book, like most adaptations, but that is OK. It allows the reader to distance themselves from what they have seen on TV. I hate reviews that tell you all about the story, so I will skip that past and say that it is a well written story, with a believable cast of characters, a mostly realistic plot, and style of writing that kept me up late to finish it. Tess does one thing that is rare in the flood of self-published writers I normally read, she knows how to write a serial. This is a complete, stand-alone work. You do not have to have read the other books in the series to know what is going on (though I would have liked a little more back story on the relationships, they were not required for the story line).I read a lot of books, but pay for very few and I do not mind that I paid for this one. The right writing and excellent editing made the ..ory a joy to read, something lacking in the 'FREE' books I normally read. As long as you don't expect the TV series, this is a great book for a fast read.

Unfortunately this story is very real in many isolated communities. People looking for a place to belong, no matter what the cost. Ice Cold reveals the monsters who take these lost and lonely people. They turn them into mindless sheep willing to do anything to gain favor with the master.Tess Garretson does a masterful job describing the lives of these communities. Between Jane and Maura she lays bare the awful truth amid lies and lust. This is truly a spellbinding revelation of how people can be bent and twisted and have absolutely no concept of what is happening to them.This is one of those novels you just can't put down.

If so, you'll love the second edition: not a word has been changed. You won't have any problem finding the new materials: it's all in a new section at the end of the book. As the authors point out, cost considerations precluded revising the text of the first edition.What's in the new material? A page or so of updated historical information, a discusssion of the second military model unknown when the first edition went to press, nice photos of Trans-Oceanic wannabe's from RCA, Hallicrafters, and others; photos of some of the Zenith companion radios, and some other items of interest.What's missing? Much has happened in the collector world since the publication of the first edition, and an expanded list of parts and suppliers would have been welcome. There's an ever-growing network of resources for Zenith collectors that should be included in the book. Additionally, these radios aren't getting any younger, and an expanded section on maintenance, repair, and restoration would be helpful. More detailed information on electrical restoration would be especially useful along with discussion on building and using battery packs as many collectors want to run their Trans-Oceanics on battery power.Should you buy the second edition? Should you buy another Zenith Trans-Oceanic? Of course! If your first edition is getting a little dog-eared, you'll get the same book plus some new material. As a Zenith collector, you'll want to add this book to your Zenith resources. Hopefully, when it's time for a third edition, the authors can do a true cover-to-cover revision.

This is a very interesting book. Although not a repair or restoration manual, it would have been great if the schematics for the various Transoceanic models had been included. This modest addition would have made this book truly excellent.

If you enjoy T.O.'s as much as I do, this book is a must have.Not only does it cover the history of the Zenith Corporation, it also covers the entire product line and it includes examples of the original Zenith T.O. ads.

I really can't say anymore about this book than what has already been said; it is a fantastic work, and anyone who owns a Trans-Oceanic, or is thinking of buying one need to have this book.It is full of nostalgia, history, amusing anecdotes, and well... just very amazing stories about not just a radio, or a company, but a nation and an era that has slipped by us. This isn't just a book, it is a time machine.

This book tells everything you want to know about these legendary radios. A time gone by!

One of the best books in the Haynes series covering space subjects. Lots of excellent and mostly rare pre-flight, production and early design photos, illustrations and diagrams. Well organized and *very* detailed outlining the hardware and issues surrounding the near-loss of Skylab barely a minute into the lauch of the orbital workshop. I have about a half a dozen other hard cover books about the Skylab program, mostly NASA published, and this one is at the top.Finally, I would recommend picking up the Haynes Saturn V manual as well as the last chapter in that book about Skylab dovetails nicely into this book.

I bought this book hoping that it would have decent photographic coverage of the exterior of the vehicle. I know that the three crews that travelled to Skylab could dozens of in-flight inspection photos for the NASA and the contractors who built the thing. But alas, I didn’t get what I wanted. The book does a good job of covering most aspects of Skylab. However I’ve seen all of this in other volumes. I didn’t pick-up on anything new here.

With the exception of official NASA publications such as the Skylab News Reference and Skylab: A Guidebook, which were published prior to launch, books focusing on the design and operation of Skylab have been hard to come by. Although Haynes' output over the last 18 months has been extremely inconsistent, this is one of their most detailed books in a long time, and probably the most in-depth single-volume study of the Skylab hardware currently available.Reading this "manual" is somewhat like drinking from a firehouse. Like the Mercury spacecraft manual Dr. Baker wrote last year, every page is crammed with technical insights and diagrams. The majority of the book is a technical description of the station's four main components, their development, and their operation, along with the most important systems. A quick browse-through reveals details such as the thickness of the OWS tank section (3.12 mm), the type of heat transfer fluid used in the heating pipes (Freon-22), the mass of the Fixed Airlock Shroud (22,749 lb), the material used in the structural shell of the MDA (2219-T87 aluminum), and the dimensions of each of the four film vaults. The meteoroid shield, solar panel deployment mechanisms, and thermal control system, all of which would be key elements in the Skylab story, are all described in fairly extensive detail, along with equipment such as the various medical, solar and earth science experiments.Since raw technical details aren't helpful on their own, this book is extensively illustrated with photographs and original technical diagrams. Many of the photographs (most are in color) show hardware elements in various states of assembly, along with internal views of modules and mock-ups prior to flight. Besides the basic cutaways views of each module, this book includes diagrams of obscure details such as OWS wiring troughs, the trash airlock, the OWS/ S-II interstage manufacturing plane, the ATM experiments canister, and so on. I counted more than 175 diagrams and pieces of line art, the most in any Haynes book I've ever owned. This is also the first time I've seen a coherent explanation, accompanied by diagrams, of the series of events that nearly doomed the station during launch.The book falters somewhat in the last 35 pages, which presents a study of the three manned visits, potential re-boost missions, and the final fate of the station. This section isn't too bad considering the space constraints, but the author covered the subject in much greater detail in his massive 1981 "History of Manned Spaceflight." The science experiments were covered in much greater detail in the two NASA publications mentioned earlier. Finally, the book can be somewhat dry and heavy going in places. That aside, if you're looking for a "one-stop shop" for technical details on Skylab, this is probably the place to go. It's not exactly beach reading, but if you're a serious space geek, you can really get lost in this.

Tons of photos & diagrams.A much easier read than NASA tech manuals, if not as comprehensive or hefty.
