This is a wonderful book. It has clear directions with good accompanying photographs for making felt, buckram, and straw hats of various kinds, plus explanations of several kinds of trimmings. I have found this and Classic Millinery Techniques by Albrizio, which covers dressmaker sewn hats and buckram techniques as well as trimmings, to be essentials for learning the art of milinery. Both have inspiring photographs of modern finished hats.Addition: Two things I noticed about this book. One, apparently British hat blocks never have tie lines which all the brim blocks and some of the head blocks I have used do. Tie lines (grooves in the wood) makes life much easier as instead of all the pinning shown in this book, you use a cord with a slipknot and tighten it in the groove, pulling the felt or material to get it smooth. Two, this woman does everything by hand! You can use a sewing machine for many steps and save a lot of time, and most people will not know the difference.

This book is excellent! The techniques for the felt hats are pretty much exactly what I learned in a millinery class that I took at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. The designs are fresh twists on classic hats and there are definitely a good variety of hats to learn. There are photos of each step of the process for each hat, which helps visual learners like me. Sarah also explains all of the supplies that are needed as well as the different materials needed for making each hat. This is a great book for anyone looking to learn millinery in a modern format.

Great book, Id recommend this book to anyone interested in milinery techniques. Good quality book, all color pics, clear precise instructions and templates. 128 pages with glossary.

This book is not what I expected. It is for miners (sp?). Too hard for me.I gave it FOUR STARS, though, because it is a good book, and would be good for someone with a little experience, and the money to put into the equipment.

About the Author

C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia's honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution's highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students. David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans. Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee's research team's primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney's primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the author of research papers in number theory and topology and is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

I rented this book for my differential equations class at the University of Utah. I thought the book was very straightforward and easy to understand. The writing is good I thought. Just go to class, work the exercises, and you'll be fine. There are parts that are a bit hard, but that's just math/physics/engineering for you. The examples had a good mixture of trivial to difficult, as did the exercises. One positive thing about the physical aspect of the book is that it's light and small--perfect if you keep it in your backpack.I think the only thing I'd suggest is for the PDE section to go a little bit more in depth. Granted, we only covered PDEs for the final week or so, but it would've been nice to better understand that. I don't think I fully "got it."

This book isn't bad for a diff e q textbook. It tends to lean a little heavily on simple examples, but otherwise, it's a pretty solid textbook. The explanations are pretty good and the material is easy to follow. There's only a couple errors in the solutions in the back of the book, but otherwise, the book is pretty solid. It's definitely one of the better diff e q books I've seen.

I've compared this side by side with the previous edition, and all of the questions are the same. You could absolutely make it by with the previous book for much cheaper.Regarding this book, it's a great book. Very informative and to the point. Small for a textbook, not a pain to carry around.

This book is great if you know Differential Equations. I had a professor that did not teach intricacies well, he gave us the basics and left us to learn the harder stuff on our own. This book sucks to learn from as it is not clear at times on explaining concepts and jumps through steps that are helpful when learning a process. There are great examples that are relative to the real world in this book which is what I liked best about it. The problems I have with this textbook are similar to the problems I have with most math textbooks. It's written by professors for professors and leaves the students scratching their heads...

The textbook is very well organized and the logic is presently fully and clearly. Plenty of graphical representations to help you understand. The only complaint I have is that this textbook is virtually identical to two others from the same authors, basically cut and paste with only a few different sections. Imagine my joy at getting to buy 3 expensive versions of the same textbook for 3 different courses! But of those 3, this is probably my favorite rendition. Overall, the textbook itself is great. Just try to buy it once.

This book picked up where my professor left off and allowed me to pass my differential equations class. Great as a supplement to a course or as a stand alone resource for independent study. The format is familiar to anyone who studied high school level math in the US, which speeds up the process of learning the course material.

This book is horribly written. The only reason anyone in my class bought it was for the homework problems in the back. It takes complicated concepts and makes them even more complicated. The good news is the poor quality of the book caused me to attend every lecture and take copious notes. It took (LITERALLY) 1/10th the time to learn from the lecture, than to try to decipher this book.Horrible! Proof that being an expert and Ph.D. in a subject does not necessarily coincide with being a good author or teacher.

I bought this book for my son going to college . I did not use it but he likes it.

I am a parent of two college students, who both attend the same smaller Midwestern University, and am starting the search with our third son. I have read extensively on the topic because it's interesting and very important. I buy-in to Loren Pope's premise that small liberal arts colleges can provide an educational experience that is better than larger research universities (which I attended) and Ivy schools. He cites believable reasons for the advantages of the small college experience. His strong advocacy for these small colleges is valuable because it can help students to consider many great schools that they may not otherwise consider. For this reason alone, I recommend this book. His advice on how to research schools in a rigorous way and ask the important questions further strengthens the book's value. His application and interview advice is also helpful. His contrarian views and thoughtful ideas will help the reader think differently about choosing a college. With so many books on choosing colleges that contribute so little insight to the process, it's worth noting that this book stands out. The strong foundation and compelling central idea, however, are undermined by three issues that diminish the practicality and credibility of the book.First, I am not convinced that the author has proven his case. While inclined to agree with his premise, I did not find his argument persuasive. Yes, students probably get better teaching at a small liberal arts college. He cites a quote by a former Ivy administrator at least four times as evidence that the most prestigious schools fail in their mission. To help my son make a good decision, I need more than redundant anecdotes. Other than his continual assertions that an Ivy education is overrated and that the teachers only care about their research, I did not take-away many tangible reasons why attending these prestigious institutions provides such a poor college experience. My Ivy league friends would testify otherwise.Second, I'm not clear on whether the author thinks that there is a preferred list of small colleges that are "best" or whether he advocates for most small colleges. He is clear on his "favorites", and these represent the "grade A" schools he touts, but how does the student know which of the hundreds of small schools make the grade? What about smaller universities? Do some of them provide an excellent education? I'm convinced that this is true from my older two sons. He does provide excellent questions that should be asked at any college, but the book doesn't provide enough guidance to inform the reader of the key considerations for identifying the strongest small colleges. For this reason, the book is not as practical as the reader would hope.Third, if you are going to read the book, and I think you should, be aware that it is loaded with assertions that are stated as if they are fact. I continually found myself either agreeing or disagreeing with the points being made. This means that you'll often have your own biases confirmed, which while always comforting, it doesn't necessarily help you make more informed decisions. And when you disagree, there aren't any citations or sources to help you probe deeper. I agree with another reviewer that many points need to "be taken with a grain of salt."On the whole, this book provides a valuable perspective that will help students and parents think more broadly and intelligently about the college search. Just make sure you keep doing your research to find the right school rather than relying too heavily on one source.

But after reading most of those, I would always return to this book.I may know more than the average person about the topic. I had applied to schools at various levels. My siblings had too. That epiphany reminded me of that one clear day in my childhood when I thought my father was not nearly as dumb as my teenage attitude knew him to be, and I had the nerve to ask him, "Dad, where are the best students for your graduate studies coming from -- name the schools." He immediately spat out many of the small ivies in the northeast. I did not want that as mother would be too close. Then he said these strange words, "Grinnell, MacAllister, Carleton, U Chicago, Pomona, Pitzer, Occidental . . ." Loren Pope would agree - one hundred percent.I then knew dear old dad was not so dumb after all. And, neither was Loren Pope when he delivered this grand endorsement of the liberal arts education.This book tells you why small liberal arts schools are not second fiddle to the larger and better known universities. The well known liberal arts schools are pearls. They are where Ph.D.'s go to teach. And the students, through that amazing nuturing process, mature to become much better minds than when they walked their first steps on the campus grounds. And, many have become so beloved by their alumni that tuitions are not as forbidding as they may have been in the years of sweater-clad bobby-socked coeds. I actually used this book to write an Android application that runs on my phone, and that I use every day. It leads you through the process, and when you are even partially done with the book, you can use the tools to create and install an application, as well as debugging, etc. I am an experienced programmer (over 30 years) and I have written in Java before, just not recently.Why not five stars? Well, I found one thing particularly irritating: At the end of each chapter, there are questions that you can try to answer, and then there are answers. The questions should be designed to teach, but there are too many questions of this sort: "True or false, there are six ways for the camel to walk through the eye of the needle?" False, there are five ways. Questions in a book like this should be designed to teach you - and simply remembering that there are five or six options to do something does not teach anything. The question should teach, the answer should teach, whether you get it right or wrong. Because the questions are poorly designed, they test memorization, not comprehension.The book is well organized - you see things you can use early, and then you build on those.About half way through the book, you start using other reference books, or the excellent web resources. But the book is always there.I believe that they are wrong in that they divide the book into "sessions"/chapters and sessions are supposed to be one hour. Some were significantly longer than an hour, especially those that required you to install something on your computer, some were much less. I ended up ignoring session boundaries, chapter divisions, and the like, and just worked through the book until I got tired of it, then went back to my application.While I was given a print copy of the book by Amazon Vines, I bought a kindle copy so that I could search the text. I found that the tables on the Kindle Copy were not that useful. That was the final factor in my four star review.

If you have a reasonable beginner's background in JAVA, use this. I don't; I will always be wondering what I'm doing wrong. Other quibble/roadblock: the screenshots are about two inches on a side. I had to use a magnifying glass to read them (it does work, but should I have to?).I'm going to try to finish this, but have had better luck with mybringback.com's video tutorial so far.Not so exciting update: I gave up at chapter ten; too many:-unexplained errors using the author's code,-too many hours spent trying to fix them by myself first and then with the code-not enough explanation after the first couple of chapters (I managed pretty well, but I have superior Google-fu).I'm sure there are better books, somewhere.

I got this book in the hopes of learning the syntax of android programming. My background is java, which the book suggests you know. The issue with this is, THE BOOK DOES NOT GIVE YOU ANY INFO ON THE LIBRARIES NEEDED TO IMPORT! If you do not know what that is, DO NOT buy this book! As I read through the book, it gave me a great background, but it threw information at me with no background info, which is needed in order for you to know what to do with it. The book babies you in what to do, but doesn't really say what to do with it after you have done it, maybe on some of the libraries. For this reason, I cannot justify telling anybody to buy this book. It essentially makes you go search for the background info yourself, and in that case, your better off just learning it from the android page on google... for FREE! That being said, I learned a little, but I cannot say I learned enough to make a fully functional app that actually does something productive.

I have been through several SAM's Learn ... in 24 Hours books. This is my first time to use the Kindle version, and it is also the first time I have found the instructions in the book to be so inadequate without the source code provided by this website. In Chapter 10, the difference is quite dramatic! The Eclipse provided emulator, often, won't even work based on the code instruction supplied from the book itself.While this method of instruction forces me to delve deeper into the intricacies of Android development in order to make it work, which will, in the long run, probably teach me more about the process, I find it very frustrating along the way.Am I the only one who feels this way? I don't know. I haven't experienced this method of instruction before. It would be nice, if after experiencing the frustrations of getting the code to work, there was some kind of a disclaimer stating " You probably noticed that this didn't work as you were instructed to enter it into your code. That is because you must ..... ".A little frustrated, but I will not give up. I will get thru it! Maybe I'll be better off for it.

This is not your typical 24book, here is a project we will be working on throughout the book. Here is the code, type it in and lets play with it. The book tells about functions and then list woefully inadequate instructions in the Example section to try. No help with an ide you are probably not familiar with and no examples to see if you have accomplished the example. I would have prefered an out of date sdk version and even an out of date ide to load up and follow along with. The 24 hour books are very good, this slipped by without the usual standards.

I am a computer programmer with no experience writing android apps. This is a great intro book for people like me. I can't say how it will work for non programmers.It starts out getting you set up with the right environment. (Eclipse with the Android SDK).It has great lessons getting you started with screen designs/testing/coding/etcI would recommend this book.

When it comes to computer books, this book is off the charts.One final point is you might moan about the cost of securing your computer or network but if it gets breached the cost is likely to be much higher.
