I am a parent of two college students, who both attend the same smaller Midwestern University, and am starting the search with our third son. I have read extensively on the topic because it's interesting and very important. I buy-in to Loren Pope's premise that small liberal arts colleges can provide an educational experience that is better than larger research universities (which I attended) and Ivy schools. He cites believable reasons for the advantages of the small college experience. His strong advocacy for these small colleges is valuable because it can help students to consider many great schools that they may not otherwise consider. For this reason alone, I recommend this book. His advice on how to research schools in a rigorous way and ask the important questions further strengthens the book's value. His application and interview advice is also helpful. His contrarian views and thoughtful ideas will help the reader think differently about choosing a college. With so many books on choosing colleges that contribute so little insight to the process, it's worth noting that this book stands out. The strong foundation and compelling central idea, however, are undermined by three issues that diminish the practicality and credibility of the book.First, I am not convinced that the author has proven his case. While inclined to agree with his premise, I did not find his argument persuasive. Yes, students probably get better teaching at a small liberal arts college. He cites a quote by a former Ivy administrator at least four times as evidence that the most prestigious schools fail in their mission. To help my son make a good decision, I need more than redundant anecdotes. His negative perception of the Ivies is based on his extensive experience and a few very old quotes (as another reviewer points out) of challenges faced by Ivy grads from the 50's. While I respect his experience and passion for small colleges, he doesn't provide the critical reader with enough evidence to believe his case. Other than his continual assertions that an Ivy education is overrated and that the teachers only care about their research, I did not take-away many tangible reasons why attending these prestigious institutions provides such a poor college experience. My Ivy league friends would testify otherwise.Second, I'm not clear on whether the author thinks that there is a preferred list of small colleges that are "best" or whether he advocates for most small colleges. He is clear on his "favorites", and these represent the "grade A" schools he touts, but how does the student know which of the hundreds of small schools make the grade? What about smaller universities? Do some of them provide an excellent education? I'm convinced that this is true from my older two sons. He does provide excellent questions that should be asked at any college, but the book doesn't provide enough guidance to inform the reader of the key considerations for identifying the strongest small colleges. For this reason, the book is not as practical as the reader would hope.Third, if you are going to read the book, and I think you should, be aware that it is loaded with assertions that are stated as if they are fact. I continually found myself either agreeing or disagreeing with the points being made. This means that you'll often have your own biases confirmed, which while always comforting, it doesn't necessarily help you make more informed decisions. And when you disagree, there aren't any citations or sources to help you probe deeper. I agree with another reviewer that many points need to "be taken with a grain of salt."On the whole, this book provides a valuable perspective that will help students and parents think more broadly and intelligently about the college search. Just make sure you keep doing your research to find the right school rather than relying too heavily on one source.

When I was a parent of a senior, I became engulfed with the gossip and happenings of college admissions. It really became a chronic habit to ask others about their child's latest quests. And, when I investigated, I started with this book - start with the best.There are many other good books with clever names. But after reading most of those, I would always return to this book.I may know more than the average person about the topic. I had applied to schools at various levels. My siblings had too. We had attended good to great schools. And, our father was a professor at two major universities -- those with ivy on their walls.When I read this book, a bulb lit. That epiphany reminded me of that one clear day in my childhood when I thought my father was not nearly as dumb as my teenage attitude knew him to be, and I had the nerve to ask him, "Dad, where are the best students for your graduate studies coming from -- name the schools." He immediately spat out many of the small ivies in the northeast. I did not want that as mother would be too close. Then he said these strange words, "Grinnell, MacAllister, Carleton, U Chicago, Pomona, Pitzer, Occidental . . ." Loren Pope would agree - one hundred percent.I then knew dear old dad was not so dumb after all. And, neither was Loren Pope when he delivered this grand endorsement of the liberal arts education.This book tells you why small liberal arts schools are not second fiddle to the larger and better known universities. The well known liberal arts schools are pearls. They are where Ph.D.'s go to teach. And the students, through that amazing nuturing process, mature to become much better minds than when they walked their first steps on the campus grounds. They are truly "learning institutions."Liberal arts schools epitomize the concept of higher education. And, many have become so beloved by their alumni that tuitions are not as forbidding as they may have been in the years of sweater-clad bobby-socked coeds. Many of the schools loved by Pope are so well endowed that they are "need blind" with their admissions. Perfect admissions concepts at what are deemed nearly perfect learning environments.His simple advice -- the ivies (for undergraduate) are overrated and liberal arts schools are either underrated (those we know about) or HIGHLY underrated (those we know little if nothing about).Chock full of statistics and years of experience, Pope basically created a new image for many liberal arts schools. He is the Don for arguing the merits to liberal arts education. He unfortunately died recently, and should probably have a scholarship named after him at most of the liberal arts schools in America. He is the progenitor of liberal arts educational superiority. His written beliefs were contrarian to the ivy state. He was the original. This book was the original's original publication of these beliefs. This is the bible of why liberal arts education is one of America's greatest resources.

I read and reread this book so many times for a whole year in search of a college for my son. I am very grateful to Loren Pope. Originally, I read older version through interlibrary loan, then hoping that it is updated on ' some favorites ' section, I purchased this copy. There were some good updates. But not on the school choices. As he has that famous College That Changes Lives, it does not really make sense to duplicate those forty schools.

I actually used this book to write an Android application that runs on my phone, and that I use every day. It leads you through the process, and when you are even partially done with the book, you can use the tools to create and install an application, as well as debugging, etc. I am an experienced programmer (over 30 years) and I have written in Java before, just not recently.Why not five stars? Well, I found one thing particularly irritating: At the end of each chapter, there are questions that you can try to answer, and then there are answers. The questions should be designed to teach, but there are too many questions of this sort: "True or false, there are six ways for the camel to walk through the eye of the needle?" False, there are five ways. Questions in a book like this should be designed to teach you - and simply remembering that there are five or six options to do something does not teach anything. The question should teach, the answer should teach, whether you get it right or wrong. Because the questions are poorly designed, they test memorization, not comprehension.The book is well organized - you see things you can use early, and then you build on those.About half way through the book, you start using other reference books, or the excellent web resources. But the book is always there.I believe that they are wrong in that they divide the book into "sessions"/chapters and sessions are supposed to be one hour. Some were significantly longer than an hour, especially those that required you to install something on your computer, some were much less. I ended up ignoring session boundaries, chapter divisions, and the like, and just worked through the book until I got tired of it, then went back to my application.While I was given a print copy of the book by Amazon Vines, I bought a kindle copy so that I could search the text. I found that the tables on the Kindle Copy were not that useful. That was the final factor in my four star review.

If you have a reasonable beginner's background in JAVA, use this. I don't; I will always be wondering what I'm doing wrong. Other quibble/roadblock: the screenshots are about two inches on a side. I had to use a magnifying glass to read them (it does work, but should I have to?).I'm going to try to finish this, but have had better luck with mybringback.com's video tutorial so far.Not so exciting update: I gave up at chapter ten; too many:-unexplained errors using the author's code,-too many hours spent trying to fix them by myself first and then with the code-not enough explanation after the first couple of chapters (I managed pretty well, but I have superior Google-fu).I'm sure there are better books, somewhere.

I got this book in the hopes of learning the syntax of android programming. My background is java, which the book suggests you know. The issue with this is, THE BOOK DOES NOT GIVE YOU ANY INFO ON THE LIBRARIES NEEDED TO IMPORT! If you do not know what that is, DO NOT buy this book! As I read through the book, it gave me a great background, but it threw information at me with no background info, which is needed in order for you to know what to do with it. The book babies you in what to do, but doesn't really say what to do with it after you have done it, maybe on some of the libraries. For this reason, I cannot justify telling anybody to buy this book. It essentially makes you go search for the background info yourself, and in that case, your better off just learning it from the android page on google... for FREE! That being said, I learned a little, but I cannot say I learned enough to make a fully functional app that actually does something productive.

I have been through several SAM's Learn ... in 24 Hours books. This is my first time to use the Kindle version, and it is also the first time I have found the instructions in the book to be so inadequate without the source code provided by this website. In Chapter 10, the difference is quite dramatic! The Eclipse provided emulator, often, won't even work based on the code instruction supplied from the book itself.While this method of instruction forces me to delve deeper into the intricacies of Android development in order to make it work, which will, in the long run, probably teach me more about the process, I find it very frustrating along the way.Am I the only one who feels this way? I don't know. I haven't experienced this method of instruction before. It would be nice, if after experiencing the frustrations of getting the code to work, there was some kind of a disclaimer stating " You probably noticed that this didn't work as you were instructed to enter it into your code. That is because you must ..... ".A little frustrated, but I will not give up. I will get thru it! Maybe I'll be better off for it.

This is not your typical 24book, here is a project we will be working on throughout the book. Here is the code, type it in and lets play with it. The book tells about functions and then list woefully inadequate instructions in the Example section to try. No help with an ide you are probably not familiar with and no examples to see if you have accomplished the example. I would have prefered an out of date sdk version and even an out of date ide to load up and follow along with. The 24 hour books are very good, this slipped by without the usual standards.

I am a computer programmer with no experience writing android apps. This is a great intro book for people like me. I can't say how it will work for non programmers.It starts out getting you set up with the right environment. (Eclipse with the Android SDK).It has great lessons getting you started with screen designs/testing/coding/etcI would recommend this book.

The book has a lot of very valid information. It focuses not only the software approach of white-hat (good guy) hacking, but also social engineering. I learned that you should keep your passwords protected with some software, not only write on paper. I also learned that there are such things as hardware keyloggers can be used to get anyone's password quite easily. Lots of great tips in this book on how to protect yourself from the bad guys. It covers everything and all the chapters are divided up in an understandable fashion. When it comes to computer books, this book is off the charts.One final point is you might moan about the cost of securing your computer or network but if it gets breached the cost is likely to be much higher. That's especially true if you are a company or organization.

ThatÂ’s the principle behind this elegantly understated book, which places photographs taken by photographer Berenice Abbott in the mid-1930s alongside present-day photos of the same locations shot by Douglas Levere, whose work has appeared in such magazines as Forbes and People. In some cases, the contemporary images are remarkably similar to the Depression-era ones; take, for instance, the New York Telephone Building, which, aside from a new name (Verizon Communications Building), seems unchanged by time. Others are utterly different. In 1937, the WanamakerÂ’s department store occupied the corner of Broadway and east 9th Street, and its façade was covered in billboards; today, a 15-story apartment building and diner stand in that same space. Some duos are similar, but with one altered element—like the absence, in 2002, of an elevated railroad track blazing through Herald Square, as it did in 1936. ItÂ’s clear that Levere took care to re-shoot the photos from virtually the same angles that Abbott used—which is much easier said than done. The text that accompanies each pair of photos underlies the difficulty of LevereÂ’s task. For a photo depicting Fifth Avenue shoppers dashing around, Levere had to rent a double-decker bus, but since he couldnÂ’t get permission from the city to stop in traffic, "the bus driver feigned an emergency, placing orange cones on the road and opening the bus hood to allow Levere to take his photograph at precisely 1:10 P.M." This is a beautiful book. Perfect for anyone who loves new york city.

I'm fascinated by "then and now" picture compilations. That said, this book does have some really good examples of the genre, however they are surrounded by much less interesting and really unimportant locations throughout NYC. It's a mix. If you like to see how a great city changes, this will have some utility. As a former native New Yorker, I found enough to make me glad I'd bought it but not enough to delight me.

Then and now photobooks of American cities are steady bookshop sellers but it is not until you turn over the pages of 'New York Changing' that you'll realise that this is how it should be done. Douglas Levere, with help from Berenice Abbott, has created a brilliant photo record of the world's premier city.To start with Abbott created the perfect architectural record with the 1935 to 1939 WPA sponsored project when she shot just over three hundred photos of the city (you can see two hundred of these in 'Berenice Abbott: Changing New York', ISBN 1565845560) and Levere has retaken over a hundred of these with eighty-one appearing in his book.Unlike other inferior books of the genre Levere has taken the utmost care with his project. Not only using the same type of camera and lens as Abbott but waiting until the same season and time of day to freeze the moment six decades later. A fascinating page of technical details at the back of the book explains more. The eighty-one photos are divided into four chapters with the majority taken in Manhattan. On each spread Abbott's photo is on the left and Levere's opposite, Bonnie Yochelson writes a straightforward caption for all of the images.With the help of 200dpi printing, quality paper and elegant design these photos (and the book) look just stunning. In the middle of the depression Berenice Abbott began a five year, WPA funded project to document in photographs New York's transformation from the 19th century to the modern metropolis of skyscrapers. The result was published as 'Changing New York.'Sixty years later Douglas Levere went back to the same sites of 100 of Abbotts photographs and took another picture with the same angle, the same view, and usually even the same time of day (to get the same sun angle) of the same scene.The result is this book, 'New York Changing' which shows these pictures arranged next to each other. That way, the only differrence between the pictures is the changes that have come about in the basic structure of the city.This is a beautiful coffee table book, except that seeing one set of pictures makes you want to turn to the next set, and you've soon gone through the whole book.Highly recommended.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has even a passing interest either in New York or photography-or both. It reveals much about New York in recent years, about Douglas Levere's fanatical and skillful photographic obsession; and it reminds us of Abbott's remarkable accomplishment during the 1930s.In a CNN interview, Levere described his re-photography project modestly as a snapshot of New York at the end of the last century that we can compare to Abbott's snapshot of New York in the 1930s. Through such a comparison, he said, we can learn "what we've done to this place we call New York." While this is true, his use of the term "snapshot" suggests a kind of intuitive casualness, which is far from the truth, at least in terms of Levere's own photographs. Although Abbott's views of New York were sometimes taken intuitively and occasionally even randomly, Levere's photographs are anything but. One immediately senses and appreciates his faithful replication of every shadow, every angle, every framing, and every bit of lens distortion in Abbott's original photographs. His scrupulous attention to the details in her work is especially remarkable because Abbott's techniques did not make his task easy. She created vexing puzzles not only by tampering with some of her lenses (to double their magnification, according to the book's introduction), but also by taking some of her Financial District photographs blindly over the edge of tall buildings because of her fear of heights.It is striking that Levere's project is so different from Abbott's in process, but similar to a certain extent in effect. Abbott's project was primarily a sociological study imbedded within modernist aesthetic practices. She sought to create a broadly inclusive collection of photographs that together suggest a vital interaction between three aspects of urban life: the diverse people of the city; the places they live, work and play; and their daily activities. It was intended to empower people by making them realize that their environment was a consequence of their collective behavior (and visa versa). Moreover, she avoided the merely pretty in favor of what she described as "fantastic" contrasts between the old and the new, and chose her camera angles and lenses to create compositions that either stabilized a subject (if she approved of it), or destabilized it (if she scorned it). Levere, on the other hand, started with Abbott's camera location, camera angle, lens, time of day and time of year, and recorded what appeared within his camera's viewer. Clearly Levere's images seem unlike Abbott's in intent. Yet because of the broad range of new and old subjects that he has recorded, when juxtaposed with the even older subjects in Abbott's images, his project, too, creates a similar fantastic impact.Moreover, despite the near-randomness of Levere's subjects, one imagines that Abbott would be pleased that his photographs are able to tell us much about the culture of late twentieth-century New York. By comparing his work to hers, we are repeatedly reminded that New York is, like all vital cities, an ever-changing manifestation of the people who live there: their enterprise, love and fashions as well as their dereliction and spite. Such an interpretation is reinforced by Bonnie Yochelson's richly insightful captions. But Levere's project will be even more significant than that for future historians. Because his project began in 1997 and ended in 2002, it also offers us one of the best (though unintended-and perhaps for this very reason twice-as-compelling and ten times as chilling) records of New York in the months leading up to, and immediately following, September 11, 2001, when the entire world was reminded that New York is a manifestation, too, of people who do not live there at all.

Jordan through my seminary's online learning program: CALL, via the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. I recommend this book to seminarians, the newly ordained, old-timers who never learned best practices of financial management of parishes, vestries, treasurers, church bookkeepers and parish administrators. Respecting the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved with church money from the time it hits the collection plate, is counted, deposited, posted, reconciled and is spent or invested is critical. I learned how easy it can be for anyone with access to church money commit fraud and embezzlement if leaders don't take responsibility to insist on creating and following well-documented processes that include regular oversight. I'll use and recommend this book for as long as I serve in the Episcopal Church.

Every Episcopal priest needs to read this, as does every treasurer, vestry member, bookkeeper and parish administrator. I use it in training new church bookkeepers who don't have ecclesial experience and it is fantastic. He leans hard on the side of doing things right—which is what is needed when churches tend to cut far to many corners in this area of their ministerial life. It is practical and yet complete. An EXCELLENT resource.

Mr. Jordan's book is a great resource for those who work in the parish, especially clergy, vestries, financial staff, and volunteers helping with any sort of money. This book would be especially helpful for those in seminary preparing for ordination and work in the church, school, or some other Episcopal institution as most seminaries do not spend a whole lot of time dealing with these matters. The book is very thorough but not overly complicated for those who don't have a business or financial background, and is a good book to go back to again and again when financial questions arise.

This book was absolutely worth it. Barrett changed my whole perspective on the test and really helped me understand what I needed to do in order to get a high score. He clearly explains how the SAT is made and why understanding this is so crucial to doing well on it. I used this book all summer to study for my SAT and got a 1550 on my first try!!

I read this book so carefully and took so many notes that I can say I literally spent at least three entire days with it. And it payed out! Went from 1220 to 1460.

This book is hands down the most useful book you could use to raise your score for the New SAT.I’m a rising junior scheduled to take the SAT this October, and so far my family’s spent hundreds of dollars on outside tutors and tuition programs to teach me the “hidden secrets” of the SAT and understand the ins and outs of this standardized test. Amazing test prep. A weekish before the SAT I realized I should probably study, so off I went to Amazon to find a book - there was no class, tutor, or online video that I felt could really help me in the amount of time I had left. I saw the Black Book at the top of the page, but after hearing it had 600 pages immediately looked for another option. I read online about the best books to use and eventually came back to this behemoth. Okay, 600 pages or not, I guess this was the book. I got the book that week before my first SAT, and, while trying to read 600 pages seemed impossible, actually reading the book wasn't as hard as it initially seemed because the way they write is easy to understand and engaging. Plus, probably over half of the pages were walkthroughs of the first four practice tests so there wasn't actually 600 pages you have to read every line of. The walkthroughs, though, were invaluable as they helped me understand how to work through all of the problems multiple different ways (you can see how others might answer that you never thought of, and that might actually be better). If you don't have a lot of time before the test, or you don't want to read all 600 pages, you can just do one or two of the walkthroughs and that will reduce a lot of pages. For me, each night I read one test section's material/tips, did the first practice test on that section (I printed the practice tests out myself-they aren't in the book), and then scored it and evaluated how I could improve using his walkthroughs. This meant that after four days I had read about the reading, math, writing, and essay (the book is structured in that order) and had finished the first practice test. After that, I did one whole practice test and reviewed it using his walkthroughs for the next two nights. At this point, my score hadn't improved a lot since the first practice test, but each time I had encountered new problems that I wasn't sure about and after looking at the walkthroughs felt confident in being able to do next time. On the day of the test, I felt much better about my timing, skills, and the test's structure overall because of Mike and Patrick's book. One of the questions I had gotten wrong and reviewed in a walkthrough the night before actually appeared on the test! Not yet sure of the score, but I can say it didn't seem as hard as I thought it would be solely due to their solid advice and practice walkthroughs. 10/10 recommend to anyone, whether you have a lot of time to study or not!Update: The first SAT I took (June 2018), the one I wrote this review about originally, I got a 1500. I wanted to take it one more time, but I then procrastinated studying again and with one week left reviewed the book and took the remaining practice test that the book covers. I also looked back over the printed practice tests I did the first time, finding where I commonly made mistakes. For the August 2018 SAT I got a 1530. This book was amazing not only for how to think about the test, but also just to review concepts for both math and grammar.

SAT Prep Black Book: The Most Effective SAT Strategies Ever PublishedHands down best thing I ever did. I have a exam on Nov 4 and I just received this book today. Spent the night reading the first 70 pages. This book just made me realize I can have better marks than what I was hoping for. I was skeptical about getting even a 700 on reading and writing section. After the first 70 pages and using the methods written, I answered a couple of questions without even reading the passage. I was completely blown away by it. Best 29 bucks ever spent. With this knowledge I am looking forward to get around 780. This book completely stated the exact mistakes I was making reading a passage, and how it prevented me from getting answers right. I still have yet to read the writing and math section, but I am optimistic that the book will help me in those sections as well.To be honest this is my first review, and Mike Barrett, I would like to thank you for helping me out here. Your book helped me understand the test better and reduce my stress and anxiety.I would definitely recommend people to buy it. If you are expecting practice questions and other stuff like you find in Kaplan, barron's and Princeton review, you wont find them in the book. But whats inside will completely amaze you. So simple yet never thought about.

We have tried every product out there, and ALL of the kids do well following the strategies outlined in this book -- and some with some very dramatic increases over a short time. It's absolutely the best guidance on SAT strategies (and their ACT book, too). You will NOT be disappointed. Please know you do have to buy the Official ACT guide to make the best use of the guidance, however.
