With as much anticipation as a 12 year outside Barnes and Noble waiting for the midnight release of Harry Potter #7, I pre-ordered Meehan’s Bartender Manual so it would arrive freshly on my doorstep publication day; 8 hours later, and 260 pages into his manual, I already know this book will be as influential as many of the defining cocktail books of our era that built my mixology hobby - death & co, liquid intelligence, potions of the Caribbean. Although I can yet to comment on the second half (yes I’m reading it front to back) I can recommend with utmost confidence you should buy Meehan’s new manual if you want to be on the forefront of our cocktail revolution; he has taken his decades of experience and vast weath of knowledge and placed it at your fingertips with insights and wisdom stated clearly, efficiently, and beautifully. I’ll give some examples:-Cocktail History: Meehan condenses many worldwide threads of cocktails history (tiki, prohibition, punch, the dark ages aka 60s/70s, our newest revolution) and places them in a logical timeline that clearly makes sense in simple language. I have read many cocktail books explaining these eras separately, but for the first time Mehaan connects and integrates the whole story clearly, showing how our history molded the cocktail renessance we are in today.-Commercial Bar Design: he examines every detail down to the minimum dimension of a bar stool chair cushion, to optimized well bottle organization, to lighting, floor plans, neighborhood selection, all with insights gleaming through from his many years building PDT and other world renown bars.-Home Bar Design: this is the first book I have seen touch on Home bars, where many readers like myself spend the majority of our time crafting drinks.-Tools and Techniques: while many other books have belabored these subjects to death, Meehan added fresh insight to these already well written about topics. It is written at the level both an expert and a novice can draw significant knowledge from.-Production: Meehan takes liquor from the farm to distillation to bottling to table, unmasking a fascinating world only seen by the leaders in the field.And of course as with every book, there is the ‘Spirits and Cocktails’ section. It’s divided by liquor class, each with a beautiful introduction on the birthplace, origin, history, and shaping of that class. Meehan focuses on only 100 cocktails (classics/vintage + some of his creations), allowing more depth by going through the “origin, logic, and hacks” for each drink. I love this organization. It’s a nice variation from so many prior cocktail books.And past page 260 (I’m currently in his rum based section), I’ll leave to you so I don’t spoil it all. Enjoy as you dive into this great new book that will join in history as a defining book of our cocktail revolution.p.s.+It’s bound in a beautiful green thick hardback cover that has both the beauty of a coffee table book to the durability of a barback book+It has beautiful Pictures, Bar Layout Designs, Maps, and imagery making it pleasing to flip through.

I am extremely impressed by the entirety of this cocktail book. It has a heavy focus on the logistical and technical aspects of not just making drinks, but opening, setting up, and operating a bar efficiently. The included architectural plans of successful bars and the explanation and analysis of their use of design and space is something you don't see in almost any other cocktail book. The section on drink making technique is handled in an almost tactical narrative. It using the fictional placement of a very large order of 11 or so cocktails requiring every method of drink creation to explain how a bar with two bartenders would most efficiently split the work and create the ensuing drinks so that everything was finished at around the same time while maintaining the quality of every single drink.The photography is stunning, the layout is very intuitive, and the physical binding and quality of printing are all top notch. Each recipe comes with a photograph, the history of the drink, and recommendations on quality of spirits/ingredients to use.I will say, that if you're just looking for a straight recipe book or an introductory cocktail book to get your feet wet, this may be a bit intense. It really is aimed more towards folks who are already, or are interested in becoming, involved in the cocktail/hospitality industry, or cocktail enthusiasts who are in pretty deep. This is not a generalist manual as it goes into very detailed specifics and theory as well as philosophy of being in the service industry.This is not a criticism at all and I think that this is one of Meehan's Bartender Manual's greatest strengths which makes it stand out from the crowd, but that said just be aware if that doesn't sound like something you're into. I'd absolutely recommend this book and am very pleased with this purchase. I already had high expectations when I pre-ordered this since PDT's cocktail book (also by Jim Meehan) was amazing, but this is a book with a different purpose that I think elevates even past it.

Great reference and history of spirits. There are some great recipes in here that go to often. Many of the recipes call for boutique spirits that can be very hard to acquire. I wish substitutions are more clearly spelled out, but to be clear, there are attempts to 'hack' some recipes in cases where some recipes are hard to find. It's a great book and very interesting, but not quite what I was expecting for home mixing. The few recipes I pulled out of it are great--I was just expecting a book/reference with many recipes that I can use.The take away for me would be: if you're looking for a book with a bunch of recipes for home mixing, this may not be the best one for you. The first recipe doesn't show up until hundreds f of pages into the book. However, If you're looking to be highly educated in spirits with a few bullet-proof recipes, you should consider this book. I recommend the Negroni, Boulevardier, Rob Roy, Vesper, Old Friend, and 21st Century.

Although I have been playing bridge quite regularly for the past two years, and now consider myself more than a "beginner", I found that Mr. Bayonne's approach to teaching bridge and easy-going writing definitely gave me insights and hints that have been very useful as I continue to enjoy this game so very much. I was grateful for the many hand illustrations and explanations of how to "read" the cards to develop a strategy for play, and appreciated the definitions of "bridge lingo" that I had heard but wasn't really certain of. Well done! How abut a book for intermediate players, Mr. Bayonne?

Well written, but needs a section on intermediate bridge playing. Good explanations and good example hands

I sampled this book at a bookstore near where I live. It's a slightly re-written edition of Mr. Bayone's primer from 1998, "It's Bridge, Baby." I thoroughly enjoyed that book, and learned a great deal from it. The main differences are: 1) "A Taste" has more illustrations and some practice exercises, something which "Baby" didn't include; and 2) it's also noticeably thinner than "Baby." (Same content - different paper?) As fine a manual as "Baby" was, I heard in some circles that it's inch-and-a-half thickness drove away some beginners. Players realize that bridge is a challenge to learn - and teach. Thick beginners' books don't exactly help the game's image. "A Taste," at about three-fourths of an inch, is about right. It makes for lively reading and a good foundation into the world's most intriguing mind game.

Jeff's knowledge of bridge and the teaching of bridge makes this a unique book. He emphasizes what's fun, unlike other primers. That should encourage those who are interested in Bridge to give it a try. He did a marvelous job explaining how to get started at his event in Bryant Park in NYC. In fact, Bryant Park has invited him to continue to teach bridge there in 2018. I think many players will be inspired to stick with it once they get "A Taste of Bridge."

I've been very impressed with the format of this book. The emphasis on the play of the hand is so important, not only for beginners but for players who have a problem seeing how they can make their contract. A must read for all new players. Ellen Waldman

He tenido el privilegio de leer muchos libros, de los cuales he disfrutado bastantes aunque hay otros que no tanto. Debido a mi trabajo me tome un descanso en la lectura y despues de varias recomendaciones sobre este libro decidi comprarlo en ingles porque queria leerlo con las propias palabras del autor. Me gusto que no era tan largo asi que pense que no tendria problemas con la lectura y que no me iba a quitar mucho tiempo. Termine leyendolo en dos dias. Es una historia realmente buena, la narracion entre lo crudo con un toque de humor lo hace unico. Despues lo lei en espanol y debo decir que la traduccion es muy fiel al original. Definitivamente lo recomiendo aunque me dejo llorando por varios dias. Crees saber como va a terminar desde un principio pero de repente sucede algo que no te esperabas. Vas a reir pero tambien vas a llorar. Espero que la pelicula sea una buena adaptacion a este libro tan hermoso.

Si bien muchos pensarán que la película sobre este libro te deja sin aliento, la lectura del mismo te impactara. Esta fugas historia de amor te mete tanto en la mente de los personajes que uno siente sus alegrías y tristezas. Recomiendo la lectura de esta novela tanto para jóvenes como para adultos.

As an online missionary with Global Media Outreach, I am the fortunate recipient of a wonderful education in cultures around the world. Recently GMO pointed me to a book about the way cultural teachings about right and wrong are shaped by various other cultural norms. In the West, for example, we are brought up to believe that law embodies right and that lawlessness is evil run rampant. Each person stands on his own before the judge, and each is responsible to comply with the law in his own strength of character. This cultural model affects the way we understand the gospel, too. For us, the story of sin and salvation works out in our individual lives, placing each of us alone before God to deal with our individual sin for our individual salvation.Until I read The 3D Gospel, I did not realize that the gospel could be understood any other way. I would have said, and I would have been very sure that I was right, that this is how God sees it. In the past, exposure to other cultural patterns before I read 3D Gospel led me to believe that other cultures needed to “grow up” and see it our way.The author of The 3D Gospel makes it very clear that our understanding that the Bible is for everyone is absolutely true. Cultures in which the individual has an overarching responsibility to avoid bringing shame to the family, the local community, or the tribe are known to God, and they are loved. God did not forget them when he inspired the language of the Bible. God also lovingly integrated into Scripture language that resonates with cultures who fear the spirit realm and have developed their communal deportment to manipulate spiritual power. The Bible, in fact, embodies all three of the cultural views of right and wrong that shape cultures around the world. I was already familiar with stories and Bible verses that address the way each form of culture receives the good news about Jesus, but when I heard those words in the past, my mind immediately translated each story and each verse into my own cultural worldview.The notion that people from the USA feel a need to educate people in other cultures to think the way we think is one of the most reviled images of America. That attitude is at the root of rejection of Americans and American ideas. It is an attitude unbecoming to someone who wants to share Jesus, the light of the world, with people who live in darkness. Many people around the world speak and write English with great skill. For that reason it is easy for us to wrongly believe that we all think alike. We don’t. The 3D Gospel is a good introduction for any person who loves people and wants to tell everyone about Jesus.

Many have seen this book as primarily a missiology book about how to communicate the Gospel in non-Western cultures. I am recommending it for it's helpfulness to Westerners and ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE GOSPEL. Many evangelicals see the gospel too exclusively through the understanding of Penal Substitutionary Atonement (PSA).Although I have some quibbles with some elements of PSA, I affirm the strong scriptural basis for most of that understanding of the Gospel, but not as the only understanding or the most primary understanding of the Gospel. Several other authors, especially those working in non-Western cultures, have observed that PSA tends to be much less compelling of an understanding in those cultures than other presentations, such as the Satisfaction Theory of St. Anselm or Christus Victor. SOME OF THESE NON-PSA UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE GOSPEL HAVE SURPRISINGLY STRONG SCRIPTURAL SUPPORT, for those of us who take our PSA goggles off and look with greater openness at the scriptural data. This book is an easy, concise way to look at the gospel in its more multi-faceted completeness. It is apparent that the Gospel is more broadly relevant to cultures and human needs than a PSA-proscribed mindset tends to be. I keep thinking, "How did I miss all of these other truths about the Atonement and the Gospel?" I'd been suffering from an eclipse of the Gospel by PSA, despite my decades of studying the Bible!In the back of my Bible on my page of my notes for presenting the Gospel I have written this reminder: "Jesus is the answer/cure for... --guilt --shame --weakness --meaninglessness --badness/sinfulness --pride --foolishness"It's true that people have a guilt problem needing forgiveness, even if they might at a point in time be more concerned about their shame or by the seeming meaninglessness of their lives. God cares about bringing solutions to all of these other needs through the Gospel too. He has provided through the gospel much more than forgiveness. All of the various "God-shaped vacuum" needs of unbelievers are rightly used by God to draw precious people to Himself. For believers, we too need the Full Gospel of Jesus Christ to touch every need we have.

This book is an excellent introduction and primer on the "3 cultures" model. It is the best short treatment I've read. It helps us to understand why people in countries around the world say and do things that we often misunderstand - and it applies to any context: commercial, political, religious, etc., The focus of the text is, of course, the application of the principles to Christian evangelism and mission, but if you don't understand the culture at large then you'll likely be frustrated in cross-cultural religious work.For those unaware of it, the "3 cultures" model describes human societies as operating on the basis of maximizing (building up) the first and minimizing (or reducing) the second of the following values:- Innocence/Guilt (predominantly seen in what we today call "Western" cultures);- Honor/Shame (predominantly seen in what we consider "Eastern" or Asian cultures); and- Power/Fear (predominantly seen in tribal cultures.No culture is purely of one type, however, and although the text is brief, it gives enough examples to understand both the general cultures and common exceptions within them.Of great value for evangelism and missions are the two sections:- one lists various traits/values that are taught in Scripture and relate especially to one or the other of the 3 culture models; and- the other presents the essential Gospel story in a suitable form for each of the culture models.I think this is the best low-cost presentation of the model, that has both theory and practice.

I bought this book simply as a reference guide since I was building a copy of a 1952 Telecaster for my brother. I'm a guitarist and luthier and I build a variety of stringed instruments from guitars, to ukuleles, to dulcimers ([...]). I'd never built a solid body electric before. I wanted to make sure I was staying true to the '52 external specs as much as possible, while looking into the later years of the guitar for upgrading the "innards" of the project. So in the beginning, my use of the book was limited. However, the more I read, the more I learned about the Tele in general, things I never knew about the father of all electric guitars as it matured. It was actually quite fascninating and well presented. There are plenty of illustrations and photos and the text is very readable.It ended up putting more ideas in my head for building future guitars of the Tele genre. The book is full of accurate and interesting information on all aspects of the Telecaster family. It isn't what I'd call a coffee table book, but is an excellent technical reference and quite interesting in many other aspects.Highly recommended.

Of all the telecaster books I have this is the best detailed reference material, I used it in putting my partscaster together. Simple things like when slotted head screws were replaced with Phillips head ones; how the decals were applied and looked are invaluable.Highly recommended

Tons of facts. Probably the best book on Telecaster info except for the limited edition Blackguard Book which is hard to get and quite expensive.This book has most everything you would ever want to know about the first successful production solid body electric!

This book is written in a scholarly fashion. There is no other guitar book like this. Be sure to read his book on the fender Stratocaster too.

This book is quite old, only covering up to the early '90's. An updated edition would be appreciated by many guitarists.

As usual, Duchossoir provides an excellent description. All the nitty gritty details are covered.

I believe the story of Aminita, she was sheltered..we have to realize she's in Russia and an a black female; which could cause her not having a great number of female influences. So, this was a great and interesting read. I was intrigued trying to figure out who was to blame for the havoc surrounding them. Yes, this reader thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it...Wanda F

Aminanta and Mace.He's a tough and no-nonsense Navy SEAL she is the adopted daughter of a ricand powerful Russian. Neither one expects to like the other but as I say you can't judge a book by its cover protecting her from the outside world and danger is not a problem protecting her from him is the problem. Her father has lied to her her entire life it says so right in the description but reading what he lied to her about is shocking. Knowing she could never trust a man like him again meeting Mace she know she can never have him because of her fears. But what brought them together to begin with keeps them together getting to know one another spending time together after all the anger and frustration and over looking certain things they become a unit they fit perfectlyI received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a new author to me. She did an awesome job on this book. He wasn't looking for forever love;but one look at this beauty had him re thinking that idea. She didn't want someone like him; but all he had to do was look at her her and she 'd give him all. but they're forbidden lovers. all hell breaks loose. great read

I absolutely LOVED this story…everything about it. It was gritty, tense, heart-stopping tension. What was murdering all of the Seals? Why were they after Aminata, the Russian oligarch’s adopted daughter? How could Mace keep her safe…especially when they are stranded and don’t know who is killing members of the team off…one by one. I was so excited to have this fabulous story from Jamila JasperThere was intrigue, steamy scenes, heart-pounding action. All of that, and then….she never finished the story. It isn’t supposed to have a cliff-hanger. She says there will be a great ending in the actual completed book. Well, there will be a better rating, when I am actually able to finish reading it.

This story takes place in various countries but starts in Russia. Amy and Mace are thrown together in unusual circumstances. The Navy Brotherhood is renowned for their Navy Seal heroics. The story progresses from protecting Amy to an underlying mission. The best part of the book was figuring out who the real bad guy was. Heck, NO, this book did not just end with a CLIFFHANGER.It took me some time to get into the story, but once I got past the first few chapters, it began to get real interesting that I want to find out who was the bad guy and what was this all leading up to, then BAM, the story comes to an end.P!ease tell me there is a book two coming out...I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Unfortunately, I did not like this story. I found it unbelievable that Aminata was that naive. Did she have no friends? I did not feel the chemistry between Aminata and Mace. She went from scared kitten to needing sex with a stranger (Mace) within seconds it seemed. I like it better when the relationship builds over time. This book was a real page turner. I couldn't believe that someone on the team would kill other members, I truly thought that there was someone else that had landed on the island too. What happened tp having your brother's back, but I guess money is a big factor. I couldn't believe that Tim was the *Spoilers* was the killer. He was so quiet.Amy and Mace had good chemistry, the other characters were pretty much too.
