Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, by Douglas W. Tallamy

From Booklist

Tallamy takes an obvious observation—wildlife is threatened when suburban development encroaches on once wild lands—and weds it to a novel one: that beneficial insects are being deprived of essential food resources when suburban gardeners exclusively utilize nonnative plant material. Such an imbalance, Tallamy declares, can lead to a weakened food chain that will no longer be able to support birds and other animal life. Once embraced only by members of the counterculture, the idea of gardening with native plants has been landscape design's poor stepchild, thought to involve weeds and other plants too unattractive for pristine suburban enclaves. Not so, says Tallamy, who presents compelling arguments for aesthetically pleasing, ecologically healthy gardening. With nothing less than the future of North American biodiversity at stake, Tallamy imparts an encouraging message: it's not too late to save the ecosystem-sustaining matrix of insects and animals, and the solution is as easy as replacing alien plants with natives. Review

"This book not only shows how important native plants are but also how easy they can be to incorporate into a landscape plan." (Ann Lovejoy Seattle Post-Intelligencer)"An informative and engaging account of the ecological interactions between plants and wildlife, this fascinating handbook explains why exotic plants can hinder and confuse native creatures, from birds and bees to larger fauna."  (Anne Raver USA Today)"This book aims to motivate parents and caregivers who are concerned about childrens' lack of connection to the outdoors." (Anne Raver New York Times) "The book evolved out of a set of principles. So the message is loud and clear: gardeners could slow the rate of extinction by planting natives in their yards. This simple revelation about the food web―and it is an intricate web, not a chain―is the driving force in Bringing Nature Home." (Elizabeth Licata New York Times)"A fascinating study of the trees, shrubs, and vines that feed the insects, birds, and other animals in the suburban garden." (Judy Brinkerhoff Garden Rant)"We all know where resistance to natives, reliance on pesticides, and the cult of the lawn still reign supreme: suburban America. And suburban America is where Doug Tallamy aims the passionate arguments for natives and their accompanying wildlife."  (Sally Cunningham Petaluma Argus-Courier)Bringing Nature Home opens our eyes to an environmental problem of staggering proportions. Fortunately, it also shows us how we can help. (Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp Eco-Libris Blog) You can look at this book as a manifesto explaining why we should favor native plants, but it’s much more than that. It’s a plan to sustain the endangered biodiversity and even more, it’s a plan to transform suburbia from an environmental liability to an environmental asset. (Warwick Beacon) This updated and expanded edition … is a delight to read and a most needed resource." (Cabin Life)"This book will not only foster a love of the outdoors in all who read it, but also create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the intricate web of wildlife outside your door." (The Recorder)

This book has fundamentally changed the way I look at gardening. I've always thought of myself as an environmentalist, but before this book, I never really GOT the fundamental connection between humans and the natural world. What was missing? The insects. Insects can't eat ornamentals. Birds don't have food if there aren't insects!Oh my gosh. Does Tallamy drive home the importance of a diversity of insects to support the populations we care about. Usually, gardeners prefer a more bug-free environment, sterile even, because bugs eat plants, and we want plants to be beautiful. Tallamy turns that on its head and shows us just how terrible it is to keep only these ornamental species that feed nobody. Sure, birds might eat some ornamental berries -- after they've raised their young. But when they are raising their young? They rely on the species that ornamental gardeners detest -- the caterpillars and other creatures that might eat a leaf or two of native plants.I have been working with native plants in my area for a couple of years, but this book has really given me the impetus to ramp up the outreach that I do. I am already planting at least half native species in my front yard (while my neighbor works to perfect his sterile lawn). My work allows me to advocate for all gardeners to consider adding native species to their properties and supporting the species that help birds and other creatures survive. This book backs me up with solid studies about what planting natives really does -- and the harm that out-of-control ornamentals (like Japanese honeysuckle) really are doing. Yikes.Tallamy reminds us that the future of our planet may depend on small, individual efforts like these. That is the one ray of hope in this book, that we may be able to make a difference in this rampaging Anthropocene era. This is a heck of a book and full of very useful information. If it doesn't light a fire under your butt and get you considering putting in at least a little patch of species native to your area to help the birds and other wildlife, then you've got some soul searching to do, my friend.

This book is terrific. I had checked it out of the library, and then wanted to have a copy of my own. I have gardened and farmed for many years, on a small suburban plot of land. I have seen all the farmland around me be developed into large suburban subdivisions, and seen yards that used to be natural and graceful become more and more sculpted, with lawns that are more like carpets, and a formality more like a living room than a beautiful outdoor space. Lawn services have replaced individual homeowner mowing, and now instead of just mowing, there is edging and blowing and removal of any natural leaf debris that is so important for the many species that a complex ecosystem supports. Many developments have Homeowner Associations that require that it be done this way. Many of them also require the right to approve the planting of anything beyond 3 feet of the house, resulting in a loss of diversity there as well.Even in neighborhoods without HOA's, the trend has been toward sculpted yards and the planting of ornamentals that are often non-native. As a result, there are fewer and fewer songbirds, butterflies, and more and more "pests" that the birds and other wildlife would have managed. I was contributing to this without realizing it, by planting non-native trees or shrubs based only on "beauty," but not with an eye to the species they support or the healthy ecosystem they make possible. Dr. Tallamy explains all of this so easily and clearly, and the many charts and lists provide accessible and quick information. This book can guide you to better choices when you're adding a new tree or shrub or flower to your yard, it can guide you to simple steps that add a very important diversity to your yards plants, and the species they support. It's like, without realizing it, you can offer so many beneficial species food to support a healthy complex web, or inadvertently be part of the starving and loss of beneficial species we want and need, just by choosing a different plant or tree, or doing things a little differently. He shows you how to do this within what you already have. And you notice the difference in even a short period of time. The word seems to go out, and the species arrive! In the past two days I have seen two different species of butterfly I never saw here before. Even things as simple as leaving a "weed" I would have otherwise removed - milkweed - we were actually able to watch monarchs go from egg to larvae to chysalis to butterfly, in our own yard, from plants in my ditch I would have just mowed down. There are so many things we can't do as we see the loss of farmland and wild places around us. This book shows how much we can do, even on a little yard, or even balcony. My yard is more beautiful, and the birds and wildlife is a joy every single day. I even appreciate and notice beneficial insects I never would have noticed, and possibly would not have had.It also helps us pass on the information so our friends and neighbors - and HOA boards - don't inadvertently contribute to the problem, and help them see how easily they can make a positive difference. The book is well written, clear, positive, approachable. It is not a "just for scientist" kind of book, and he does not lecture. It's delightful to read.I love this book and recommend it highly, for yourself, and as a gift for every gardener/homeowner that you know. It is not a book your gardening/homeowner friends might have known about or thought of, but they will appreciate it, and use it, and pass the information on to their children. And in the best kind of way - it doesn't preach, it's like taking a walk outside with a favorite uncle who knows all about the beauty and wonder around you, and is generous and fun enough so you can too.

The majority of the book's chapters deal with "Why" this is a good idea. I think that most people seeking out this type of information might already understand Why - which is important. But the book title says "How" and only dedicates one chapter on "What to Plant". Even it deals mostly with Trees except a few pages that mentions some berries. The appendix's save the book. Appendix 1 covers Native plants (not just trees) per region of the United States. Appendix 2 lists types of insects like the Monarch butterfly and what you can plant to attract and provide for it.The book is informative, but spends most of the time trying to convince the reader Why this is a method to consider as opposed to How to do it.

Even though I live on the west coast, this book has given me the understanding that I was seeking: an understanding of biodiversity, insects, the food web, and how it all fits together in supporting native pollinators/insects, birds, mammals Even though the examples are mostly east coast the message is the same: native insects rely on the native plants they evolved with, non-natives deprive native pollinators and butterflies of places to lay their eggs and feed their larvae, lack of larvae/caterpillars starve out birds and they have nothing to feed their young. Birds especially baby birds are reliant on the insects that eat the leaves to turn the plants into usable protein sources for birds. No caterpillars no baby birds. I'm using this book in conjunction with "Real Gardeners Grow Natives" by Eileen M. Stark (for Pacific NW gardens) to swap out some plants for more natives so that there are caterpillar/larvae hosts for insects to use the leaves as needed for food and nesting; also reducing lawn and changing law to a native low growing wild mix.

Review

“The book under review is a new introductory textbook in number theory. … the book is a fine book. Unique as it is focused to students that are not mathematicians. I do think this can be a trend nowdays to try to write some sophisticated material in a way that non-technical readers can enjoy. And this is a fine example I reccomend it.” (Philosophy, Religion and Science, June, 2016)“This book is intended for non-math and non-science majors. … Forman and Rash (both, St. Joseph’s Univ.) are commended for approaching this audience with this content, as number theory includes many interesting ideas, such as prime number properties, congruences, key theorems such as Euler’s and Fermat’s, and even public key cryptography. … Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates, two-year technical program students, professionals, and practitioners; general readers.” (J. Johnson, Choice, Vol. 53 (2), October, 2015)“This material is so fundamental and so well presented that if I was still teaching college mathematics I would recommend that a course based on this book be required for all potential teachers. For those on the track to teach high school math, this would be the first course in their math sequence. One of the best features of this book is the section that introduces proofs, a topic that terrifies almost every education student and many math students.” (Charles Ashbacher, MAA Reviews, February, 2015)

From the Back Cover

The Whole Truth About Whole Numbers is an introduction to the field of Number Theory for students in non-math and non-science majors who have studied at least two years of high school algebra. Rather than giving brief introductions to a wide variety of topics, this book provides an in-depth introduction to the field of Number Theory. The topics covered are many of those included in an introductory Number Theory course for mathematics majors, but the presentation is carefully tailored to meet the needs of elementary education, liberal arts, and other non-mathematical majors. The text covers logic and proofs, as well as major concepts in Number Theory, and contains an abundance of worked examples and exercises to both clearly illustrate concepts and evaluate the students’ mastery of the material.

I have read several of Mark's books and extracted good information from all of them.I am an agent and an investor myself and have done well. I always get great nuggets of ideas that will help on my next flip. Thanks Mark.

Great book. Easy read. I have been flipping for 3 years and I am always looking for more knowledge. This book gave me some new strategies and ideas and was also motivating. I am looking forward to getting the rental book as well.

Stay as far away from this drivel as possible.Scattered, terrible publishing/chapter structure, non-sequential or progressive, switches from housing to rentals every other sentence, double-speak, on and on.I read this in a day and only took one piece of advice from it: don’t ever buy another book written by this dude.

Good but a little regional

I was reading a lot of information about real estate and flipping houses. Definitely Mark's book is the one with the most valuable, current and clear details about flipping. Highly recommended!

I have bought and read a lot of RE books over the years and find Mark's writing style one of the clearest and easiest to understand. I recognize some of the material from his blog post over the years but but its all good info and seeing it again reinforces it in my mind. I have only finished six flips since starting two years ago but seeing how much Mark has accomplished gives me confidence I can build my business into something big!

The author guides you through a risky process and allows you to learn from his and others mistakes. Well written engaging content keeps you reading through well detailed subject matter. A must have for anyone thinking of purchasing a property.

I am working my way through Mark's books and have just finished this one. A ton of great information and good advice on avoiding trouble. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering this investing approach.

I'll admit I was completely ignorant of many of the details surrounding this terrorist attack. I am ashamed of just how ignorant I was. This is not a politically slanted story. It is an illustration of how our government was unprepared for this attack and no one in charge seemed to know what to do. I don't think the President's name or the Secretary of State's name were ever mentioned.I did not realize it was not a military force which fought off the attackers. I also did not realize there were two different facilities attacked that night. I had only listened to small portions of the congressional hearings and it seems to me I had heard more on the news about the reason for the attacks rather than the actual details of the attacks. This story is an incredible story is which must be told and should be taught. It is a frightening realization into just how easily our country can suffer a tragedy. The element of surprise will always give one side the upper hand and unfortunately we were caught off guard. Many people take for granted the freedom's we've been afforded with little to no personal sacrifice ourselves. Many Americans have answered the call to service and many more have died. Those brave men and women only paid part of the price in terms of sacrifice; their friends, family and loved ones paid the other part. American's, some days, may argue and complain they have to wait in line too long, or because their internet is down. It's a shame we, as Americans, have so little appreciation for the sacrifices made on our behalf. It is also a blessing we are able to live life with so few real tribulations.Thank you, to everyone, who has fought for our way of life. Always remember, freedom isn't free.

This is an excellent book the tells the story of what happened in Benghazi at both the diplomatic compound and at the CIA Annex. It is told by the operators, warriors, that were there and that fought to save lives and protect other Americans. The book takes no side in the political arguments that have taken place during the event or after the event. It is written to simply tell the story of the actions of the people involved in protecting the security and lives of the people that were there. The book is well written and the story is so intense that it is hard to stop reading for any reason. It shows the bravery of the men involved in the security and how they risk their lives to protect the Americans in Benghazi. It is important for people to know that brave men defend this country daily and this story clearly depicts what these men went through during this ordeal.I rated this book at 5 stars and I commend the warriors that were involved. Overall people were killed by terrorists and many more would have certainly died if not for the brave actions of these men. This is a fair recollection of the events as they happened and I recommend that you read this book if you have any interest of the true events that took place. This book is amazing when you consider both sides of the story that was told to the American citizens.

There was no official consulate in Benghazi. They called it the Diplomatic Compound, or Compound, because it unofficially housed American diplomats at various times for varying purposes. It was slated to host Ambassador Chris Stevens on his next Benghazi visit from Tripoli on September 11, 2012.Less than a mile away was the clandestine CIA compound known as The Annex. It housed about 30 CIA analysts and a small force of contract "operators" who provided security. They were known as the Global Response Staff (GRS Operators). The operators would accompany CIA agents as they made there way through the unfriendly confines of the city to assure their safety. They also provided security for the Annex. While the State Department hired local militia to provide most of the heavily armed security in both places, the GRS Operators knew they were the only ones they could trust if and when the crap hit the fan.The five GRS members of the Annex Security Team were all ex-military (Rangers, SEALS, Marines), all knew each other well, were in their late thirties and early forties and most had young families. All had vast Middle East military experience and some knew the language well. Others promised this to be their last "paycheck" before retiring for good; a last chance to make a few dollars to provide some financial security to their families. The Annex GRS team was asked to do an assessment of the security at the Diplomatic Compound. Ambassador Stevens had only a handful of capable, but light armed, Department of State (DS) agents for his personal protection. The Annex Security Team told the DS staff their security arrangement was awful, they should not trust the militia and would be easily overrun if a forceful attack was made. They also promised to act as the QRF (Quick Reaction Force) and come to their assistance in the event of an attack. Both Stevens and the DS agents had long asked the Department of State for more protection for the Ambassador but were routinely turned down. A lightly guarded American Ambassador in a tumultuous and unsettled Arab city was a ripe target and a recipe for disaster, especially on the anniversary of September 11.The worst did come to pass. 13 Hours is the story of how the GRS operators from the Annex did all they could, at huge risk of life and limb, to save the Ambassador, his staff and the DS agents. By the time they got there, the Compound had been overrun and the buildings were ablaze and smoking. The local militia protection had fled. They then returned to the Annex to repel 2 formidable terrorist attacks thereby protecting the CIA staff (and most likely its secrets) within that compound. The third attack killed two of them. These operators were not young gung-ho soldiers acting recklessly in a randomly scattered effort to kill the enemy. They were mature, competent, professional warriors who trusted each other implicitly. They would willingly give their life for each other or for the mission. But not before extracting a terrible price from their enemy. They were the consummate warriors, insisting on providing help to the diplomatic compound when the desperate calls for help started coming in. However, they were delayed by the controversial "stand down" order (if they said they were given one, you can be sure it's the truth) and did not arrive at the Diplomatic Compound in a timely manner. They may not have been able to save Chris Stevens or Sean Smith in any event but they successfully evacuated the rest of the staff and returned to defend the Annex. At the Annex, exposed on the rooftops to provide better firing and observation positions, these GRS Operators made their stand. Dozens if not hundreds of jihadists were cut down attempting to breach the walls. Stocked with plenty of ammo and night vision, they made their attackers pay a humiliating price. But they knew as good as they were, they could not hold out forever.Their pleas for a Specter gunship or low flying F-16s or a company of Marines were ignored and they began to wonder why their country was not helping them. Finally, a convoy of GRS Operators from Tripoli and Libyan Militia fought their way into the Annex and evacuated all personnel. All but ex-SEAL Tyrone "Rone" Woods and his old SEAL friend Glen "Bub" Doherty who came in with the "rescue" convoy and Sean Smith and Ambassador Stevens. They went out in body bags.Mitch Zuckoff does a wonderful job introducing us to these extraordinary war-fighters. His narrative is fast paced and the ironies are numerous and heart breaking. You can't help but bleed with these special guys, cry with their families and shake a fist at the leadership that abandoned them.John E. After attending three 8:30AM sociology lectures at my university, I dropped the course and bought this book.It was one of the best academic decisions I ever made.Instead of spending all semester writing essays that I don't care about, I spent about two weeks studying this book on and off and passed with a scaled score of 61.What worked for me was to read the book over the course of a couple days and take notes on it, primarily consisting of vocabulary terms with their meanings and the names of important people in sociology along with a bit about what they did. In the end I had 6-7 pages of typed notes, so I reviewed them and started doing practice tests. While doing the practice tests, I wrote down all my answers and marked the ones I wasn't sure about, then graded it. I then read through the solutions for every question that I missed or wasn't sure about (regardless of whether I got it right) and made sure I had a good idea of what each answer choice actually meant. Also, the practice tests seemed very similar to the real computer-based tests in terms of difficulty. I scored a 63 on the last practice test and a 61 on the actual test. For future readers, I took the test near the end of 2015.Study Tips:A good rule of thumb is that the earlier you see a name mentioned in the book, the more important it is that you know who they are. For example, Emile Durkheim, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, and Max Weber will show up in multiple questions, while somebody like George Simmel probably won't show up at all. You can see this trend in the included practice tests.Spread your studying out over the course of a few days or even a week or so, it's easier to stay focused if you don't have to read the whole book in one sitting, but take the test as soon as you finish your studying so it's still fresh in your mind.If you don't have a firm grasp of the English language I would not recommend you take this test without much prep. Many of the terms can be figured out just by breaking them down into their roots, but having to memorize all of them would be terrible.Disclaimer: This is what worked for me and me alone, everyone is different, and if you fail it isn't my fault.

Hello,So I never write reviews for anything but I thought this one was necessary because I would like to help out my fellow clep test takers. I will first discuss how I studied for the test, and finally I will say if I recommend this book or not. So hello, I took this class because it was the last class in order for me to graduate, therefore the pressure was real. I studied for approximately two weeks for this test, but could have studied less. Now, I believe that everyone studies differently for tests and you have to do what is best for you. I barely passed with a 53/80 and thankfully I got my credits. I am really bad a multiple choice tests and I am the girl who is between two answers and chooses the wrong one.Anyways, if you want to be successful at studying for this test I would suggest purchasing two things: this book and the official intro to sociology clep exam study guide. Take the test without prior knowledge of anything and fail it. Then highlight all the words and people you don't know and study them. I would go to a library and get books. I would get any intro to sociology book and not read the whole thing (no one has time for that) just read the summary and vocab words. If you are going to read any chapters let them be the first one and the one where they talk about the most famous sociologists. TRUST ME YOU HAVE TO KNOW THEM (Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Talcott Parsons, Emile Durkheim) and if you learn about them they will be easy points for you.I used this book as a supplement but not really to learn anything from it. It is very basic and as the other reviewers said you definitely need more than just this. As I said, you know how well you are for tests and how you should prepare... and the practice tests do help.. between each test review words that you missed and people you do not know that will definitely help.Good luck you can do it!

I just passed the CLEP yesterday with 54. I am very happy because I passed it. However, I feel like there were a lot of materials on CLEP are not covered in this book. Probably this book is not up to date (it is published over 10 years from now). I used mostly this book and did the practice tests twice. I think it's very helpful to read the answer explanation on both the questions you got correct and wrong. I feel this way works best for me. I also YOUTUBE some videos, because I am a visual learner. If I need to give suggestions to someone who is going to take the sociology CLEP exam, I will say defiantly get a newer version study guide, remember what the famous sociologists did or their ideas, try to do a lot practice questions. You will be fine. Good Luck!

#87,097 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I expected so much more out of this book. I bought it on a recommendation hoping to help some stomach issues I have been having. Reading through the first section was more like listening to the same song on repeat. What took 1/3 of the book could have easily been done in one chapter as she just kept repeating the same thing. "You are taking too many antibiotics", "you are not eating whole natural foods" "Don't be afraid of dirt". Actually no I am not and yes I am and no I am not! I get to the next section hoping for some more insight. Stop taking unnecessary antibiotics and start eating whole foods. OK since I am doing both of those things I keep reading hoping for more. Add probiotics. Well yea, we all know that. But don't mix certain ones, research it. What? Why not just tell me what not to mix? I decided not to go as low as one star as there probably is some good info in here for someone who has no idea about gut health whatsoever but if you have spent a little time reading up online don't waste your money.

We live in a new age of weird diseases and symptoms -- many traveling under the "auto-immune" banner. People by the droves go to their primary care doctors and complain of stomach and digestive ailments (bloating, food allergies, abdominal pain), light-headedness, fatigue, skin rashes, eczema, rosacea, and worse. Their doctors, in turn, follow the protocols of their training and order up standard tests in search of something physical. The tests come back negative. Now doc is beginning to wonder if he has a hypochondriac on his hands, and the patients either persist or resign themselves to pain and misery, becoming depressed as symptoms continue to plague them. Sometimes more tests are ordered, but seldom is a solution found. It's a bad scene all around. Welcome to the world of microbes, the artful dodgers (at least when it comes to standard medical tests). If you fit the description above, you should be reading Dr. Chutkan's latest book. She talks about "dysbiosis," a widely prevalent but seldom diagnosed condition where the microbial community in your body is way out of whack -- low on good bacteria and high on pathogens (bad bacteria) due to a host of modern-day causes: the accumulated ravages of antibiotic treatments, alcohol consumption, stress, diet (specifically lack of enough fiber, vegetables, fruits, fermented foods and too much sugar, carbs, processed "food," genetically-modified food), antacid use, NSAID use, birth-control pill regimes, chemotherapy, and artificial sweeteners. As patients feel sicker, doctors unknowingly feed the flames by prescribing more pain medication, antibiotics, etc., to try to alleviate symptoms and show their patients that they are "doing something." Vicious, meet circle. The misery continues.Well, if all politics are local, all health is in the gut. That's right. We are the microbial profile we feed on a daily basis. And while "feed" mostly means the mouth, it also includes the skin. Dr. Chutkan sees it as a twin mission: living dirty and eating clean. That means we do ourselves no favors by constantly cleaning our hands with hand sanitizers, applying skin products and soaps with anti-bacterial elements and good-bacteria killing chemicals (go ahead, read the ingredients, see if you have the slightest idea about what you are slathering to your skin and scalp on a daily basis... didn't think so).The best part: Chutkan offers practical tips on turning it around -- what you should eat and what you should not eat. Watch out for corn, soy products, and sugar especially. They kill the Good Army and arm the Terrorist in your gut flora. They are almost all GMO-made monstrosities by now, thanks to companies like Monsanto, which have their profits (and yes, Big Pharma's, too, because sick people drive profits) to watch after. Certain bacteria (bad) thrive on sugar and artificial sweeteners and will hijack your body's eating preferences. What we call a "sweet tooth" is actually a type of bad bacteria clamoring from your gut for more of what they need to survive (that it makes you sick means little to them, they are out for themselves and haven't a clue that they will die with you).Chutkan also offers some basic day-to-day living advice, too. A little dirt is a good thing, as is being outside (or opening windows and letting the outside in). Remember when you were a kid? Always outside, barefoot and dirty, exercising through play and interaction with others? Compare to the present, where we spend so much time in our antiseptic, air-conditioned houses, take showers every day, shellack our skin with mysterious products, clean our homes with even more mysterious, bacteria-killing products. Recipe, meet disaster. Patient, meet doctor (yet again): "Doc, I feel miserable and I don't know why." Doc and Conventional Medicine don't know why, either. As to the book itself, yes, it is somewhat repetitive at times and not a narrative wonder or anything, but I 4-star it for its contents and importance. Chutkan even devotes a chapter to the hardcore cases. Here she discusses fecal transplants, the latest frontier for people who cannot turn around their severe conditions through diet and lifestyle changes alone. Feces from healthy patients with the correct microbial profiles are transplanted into the intestines of the sick patient with miraculous results (just look the other way and get over your aversion, I guess). It's been a life-changer for people with relentless conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, pouchitis, infectious diarrhea, etc. Animals don't eat other animals' feces for nothing. Nature is often instructive (and gross). It's squeamish patients who often choose not to heed such lessons. Finally, and not least importantly, the book ends with 95 pages of "microbiome solution" recipes, mostly for dishes that will feed the good and suppress the bad bacteria that live within you -- food for stomach, skin, and soul.Yep. Brave New World (which looks suspiciously like our grandparents' Brave OLD World, before the corporations and chemicals started to hijack our willingly sheep-like lives). Advice: Buy or check out of the library. Then fight back against bad bacteria and bad businesses that will shed no tears over your slow and protracted demise.

A lot of redundant, basic information. If you are new to this topic, check it out. If you are looking for more in depth information, look elsewhere.

Excellent book for so many reasons!! Just one is that I've been taking several different probiotics recommended by my functional medicine physician for the past few years. I learned that the reason I need to eat more leafy greens and vegetables is to feed the good bacteria b/c they don't always permanently take up residence just because you take a capsule every day. If they're not receiving the food they need, they can pass out of your system which makes room for the bad bacteria. Certainly helps motivate me to eat better!

This book was a fascinating approach to a healthy lifestyle. I'm an MD and extremely frustrated at how little the western medical community knows about nutrition and diet as they relate to medical complaints that we see all the time in our patients. This book will help me personally, as well as with the medical advice I offer patients and family/friends. And the recipes look amazing- I am inspired to try all of them. Some of the book got a bit repetitive and a bit preachy, but don't let that stop you from integrating her message into your life! I will be recommending this book to everyone I know.

I bought this after watching Dr. Chutkan on the Megyn Kelly show. Having fibromyalgia and CFS, she has shown me how I can make improvements to my existing treatment and what changes I probably need to make. Of course I will talk to my doctor first. My 8 yr old son has had anxiety and chronic GI issues for the last 4 years. I'm going to get him started on her dietary recommendments. This is a great book that explains how the microbiome is at the center of our health!

Dr. Chutkan is one of my favorite doctor authors. I love how she's able to simplify the topic of the microbiome & make it very understandable for non-medical folks like myself. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to be open to the idea of working with food sensitivities due to unreliable testing. I hope that she & other doctors would start to consider the MRT blood test as part of their protocol. My son & I were helped tremendously as a result of the MRT & follow-up LEAP diet. I wonder if the difficult case she writes about could have been helped further by eliminating reactive foods?

What an incredible wealth of information. I have read this book several times and now use it as a guide. Dr. Chutkan delivers the commen sense that has been missing from the medical industry. For the first time, I am finding the solutions to my health issues. 40 years, my issues have been getting worse... and now it all makes sense. Thank you Dr. Chutkan... we are living the "Microbiome Solution" way and experiencing incredible health.
