There were 53 Father Brown stories, so any set that contains all 53 is truly complete. (FYI: There are NO Father Brown NOVELS; Chesterton -- who was otherwise a quite prolific author -- only wrote these 53 short stories about him.)The prospective reader should be aware that these stories are considerably different than those presented on the popular BBC television series. These stories were written between 1910 and 1951, and their content more or less tends to reflect those dates of composition; in actuality, however, they seem to be taking place in various and much varied locales within some generally indistinct "now." The TV series, on the other hand, is deliberately and uniformly set in a quaint English village in the 1950's. The written stories feature different characters (except for master thief-turned-detective Flambeau who occasionally reappears), whereas the TV series repeatedly uses a small number of regular cast members. The police, unlike in the TV version, are not always at odds with Father Brown, who is not quite as loveably goofy in the written versions. In the early stories he is quite inconspicuous, his humble and unassuming presence only belatedly noticed by the police; in later stories, however, after he has become something of a celebrity as a crime solver, his help is not only tolerated but welcomed. The two versions are thus different, and yet, each in its own way manages to capture the charm of the title character. Yes, those who come to these stories via having first seen the TV programs will have to adjust their mental image of Father Brown somewhat, but as they read and enjoy these stories, one image will soon painlessly merge into the other.Father Brown mysteries are as much character studies as they are mystery puzzles, and he relies on his innate understanding of human nature no less than a keen eye and logical thinking in the search for clues and motivation. Father Brown is a man of God, but the religious content of these tales, while it provides a moral compass, is not obtrusive; these stories are meant to entertain, not proselytise, and no non-Catholic need fear reading them.Admittedly, some stories are stronger, better written, more fully-developed, and more satisfying than others; a few are quite weak. But considered in toto, they are all quite charming and enjoyable. Every fan of the mystery genre who has not yet done so should immediately download and read these stories, especially in a complete set of all fifty-three.ONE CAVEAT: These are NOT all "murder mysteries" as claimed in the extended title of this edition published February 19, 2019. Inasmuch as not every crime investigated in these stories involves murder, that reference is both misleading and erroneous.
The Complete Father BrownG. K. Chesterton had sympathy for the people and against the rich rulers. His `Father Brown' stories were popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Chesterton was known for his love of paradoxes, "truth standing on its head to get attention". The `Foreword' by R.T. Bond tells how Chesterton invented the character of Father Brown after a discussion with a curate, who told him about practices unimaginable to Chesterton. Later he heard college students wonder what a curate could know about real life. Chesterton's detective would be ordinary appearing, even dull, individual. Yet he would figure out a mystery that seemingly wiser men could not fathom. Instead of analyzing clues, Father Brown tried to get inside the mind of the murderer to determine his motive and identity. [Today we would call that profiling.] This book contains all fifty-one stories. They are always entertaining and amusing even if some details are now as extinct as a horse and buggy or may seem improbable."The Innocence of Father Brown" (1911) has twelve stories. The Blue Cross; The Secret Garden; The Queer Feet; The Flying Stars; The Invisible Man; The Honor of Israel Gow; The Wrong Shape; The Sins of Prince Saradine; The Hammer of God; The Eye of Apollo; The Sign of the Broken Sword; The Three Tools of Death."The Wisdom of Father Brown" (1913) has twelve stories. The Absence of Mr. Glass; The Paradise of Thieves; The Duel of Dr. Hirsch; The Man in the Passage; The Mistake of the Machine; The Head of Caesar; The Purple Wig; The Punishing of Pendragon; The God of the Gong; The Salad of Colonel Cray; The Strange Crime of John Boulnois; The Fiery Tale of Father Brown."The Incredulity of Father Brown" (1923) has eight stories. The Resurrection of Father Brown; The Arrow of Heaven; The Oracle of the Dog;The Miracle of Moon Crescent; The Curse of the Golden Cross; The Dagger with Wings; The Doom of the Darnaways; The Ghost of Gideon Wise."The Secret of Father Brown" (1927) has ten stories. The Secret of Father Brown; The Mirror of the Magistrate; The Man with Two Beards; The Song of the Flying Fish; The Actor and the Alibi; The Vanishing of Vaudrey; The Worst Crime in the World; The Red Moon of Meru; The Chief Mourner of Marne; The Secret of Flambeau."The Scandal of Father Brown" (1935) has nine stories. The Scandal of Father Brown; The Quick One; The Blast of the Book; The Green Man; The Pursuit of Mr. Blue; The Crime of the Communist; The Point of a Pin; The Insoluble Problem; The Vampire of the Village.
