KEITH GRINT is Professor of Defence Leadership at Cranfield University, UK, and Deputy Principal (Leadership and Management) at the Defence College of Management and Leadership within the Defence Academy in Shrivenham. Previously he was Professor of Leadership Studies and Director of the Lancaster Leadership Centre at Lancaster University Management School. Before that he was Director of Research at the SaId Business School and Fellow in Organizational Behaviour, Templeton College, University of Oxford. Keith spent 10 years in industry before switching to an academic career. He is a founding co-editor of the journal Leadership, and founding co-organizer of the International Conference in Leadership Research. It is difficult to believe that this book has remained unreviewed for so long. It is a seminal contribution to the literature on leadership, and the distinction of that capacity from management. It deserves to be read and debated across so many spectra of organizations, politics and decision making.The book analyses the D-Day invasion in 1944. There is a masterful detail of the information available. This demands careful study and belies a superficial read and commentary. It is accompanied by analyses of the processes and the understanding of the personalities of the major actors involved, Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton, Montgomery, Tedder and others.But there is so much more than this. This is an analysis of the contributions of individual actors, soldiers, right down to the level of the infantryman, the destroyer captains, the beachmasters; all of those brave and dedicated, and sometimes not so ideologically dedicated, people, who gave their lives to the success of the invasion, who made things work when the strategic planning had gone awry, as it inevitably did, after the exchange of the first shots.The distinction made between management and command and the essentials of leadership in the heat of battle and invasion, resonates so much with the state of politics and the management of change in modern society. There have been so many trite comparisons made between the management of modern corporations and firms and the leadership of soldiers in battle. The literature on strategic planning is replete with the analogy between the management of the regiment and of the firm and the company, the university, the school, etc. This loses sight of the differences between command and direction in battle (and the tedium of the preparation for war) and the day to day management of organizations in mundane society. It could lead the reader to think that the metaphor of battle does not really apply to the modern organization, or at least to consider the manifest differences.But this volume goes a whole step further. It enables one to see a different way to understand management, and more importantly leadership. The distinction is made between tame problems, critical problems and wicked problems, which require the engagement of skills in management and command, but more importantly in leadership. We are led to see the vital role that the real leader, the person able to see that problems cannot be understood or analyzed from the perspective of the past, can enable change and lead, not simply manage. And the management, or leadership, of the "wicked" problem, the intractable, complex and perhaps unsolvable problem, may need to be addressed by the person at the "coal face", the person who has to see the problem that is immediately "there' and is not necessarily the person who has been appointed "to be in charge" . People may be thrust into the "wicked" problem and solve it, or at least arrive at an optimal solution, even if they were not expecting it or were not specifically trained for it. The destroyer captains off the coast of Normandy in June 1944 may have taken leadership of the wicked problem of imminent disaster, emanating from the German artillery and may thereby have advanced the invasion in a manner not foreseen by the strategic managers in London or Washington.And there are other delights in this text.The author's analysis of the training and performance of German troops, both officers and other ranks, before and for World War II, showing their preparation for and ability to adapt to change and volatile situations, as against the authoritarian and rigid preparation of soldiers in the allies, throws a whole new light on an understanding of the behavior of the armies in that conflict. It requires a resolution of dissonance about what many have understood about the differences between the Axis and Allied armies. The thinking of the like of Tarantino and his "inglorious basterds" needs a quiet re-think.It also demonstrates an ability to throw open the analysis of group performance under stress and so many other issues and problems.This book deserves attention, comment, analysis, criticism and debate. This book is stuffed full of smart and startling ideas, as well as fresh interpretations of an astonishing range of things from feminist theory to recent poetry, television, film, novels, contemporary art. I found the book a total delight to read, all manner of texts and issues are handled lightly, imaginatively and incredibly intelligently, if on occassions somewhat quickly. Ugly feelings, the main theme of the book, are states we don't like to examine, yet Ngai's book demonstrates how much can be gained from careful attention to them--the study of irritation in Nella Larsen's Quicksand is fantastic. The book is also an object lesson in how to think about the affective dimension of diverse cultural practices.

Ugly Feelings is an important new perspective in the discussion on the social significance of emotion. Ngai's exploration of chronic, non-cathartic emotions including envy, irritation, paranoia, tolerance, etc. is fascinating particularly within the political context she discusses. She shows how certain emotions are considered shameful by society and thus repressed by individuals who experience these emotions, or the emotions are vague or generalized so they do not motivate us to action. Unlike strong feelings with direct objects, most "ugly feelings" prohibit individuals from acting, or exerting political agency on their own behalf. Ngai examines these emotions at work throughout a wide range of nineteenth and twentieth-century American literature and film.

I'm somewhat perplexed by the negative reviews. There are books we like, others we don't - i like that, I get it. I may be misreading the critiques, but it appears the reviews are faulting Ngai for creating new terms. And by extension, her arguments, analyses, readings have no firm theoretic basis. Uhhm, this is how new knowledge is produced - by forging novel, relevant concepts. By calling into question or re-configuring existing concepts. Not willy-nilly but in a sustained, trenchant and thoughtful way. Ugly Feelings resists staleness.I love this book,I think it's absolutely brilliant!

I don't know what's up with those other readers, but this is a quirky, smart, compelling and useful contribution to literary & cultural studies. Not only is it well written, it's the kind of book us critics read with envy. (Speaking of ugly feelings!) I will be teaching chapters of this book in graduate seminars, and in upper-division undergraduate classes. It is a fine example of what critical projects can be and do.

Overall the book is an interesting idea, but disappointing in its execution.The objective of this book is to use literature and film as a means of exploring some of the more neglected emotional aspects of personal interaction. The major flaw is the writing style. It is overwhelmingly pretentious, to the point of being almost unreadable. Every chapter reads like a bad college essay in which the author is trying too hard to appear intelligent, using a long word (sometimes incorrectly) when a short one would have been a better fit and more readable, and packing each sentence with as many subclauses and parenthetical distractions as possible.If you can make it past the bad writing, there is some good content here, but it's hard work, and once you unpack some of the arguments from their obfuscated language, they often turn out to be quite flimsy. This is a shame, because the author certainly seems to have a wide knowledge of literature to draw upon, and the premise of the book is a good one.

it was bound to be a rocky road when Ngai invented a word for a psychological state in the introduction. Ngai devotes an entire chapter to this newly invented term. Is this an attempt to mimic Heidegger? The word is even a quasi-Kompositor, rather like Dasein! Although filled with brilliant references, the book did not deliver. A philosophical who's who name and quote dropping nuisance with some pop-culture and psychology tossed in the mix. Adorno, Nietzsche or Heidegger directly were more exciting. I read this book in English and perhaps it is better if read in another language, but I won't be reading it twice.

"Caveat emptor"/buyer beware.For those fellow customers who want to buy this item because they intend to use it in a Shakespeare class on the college grad school level. Do not, I repeat do not waste your money.Let me explain, this edition does not contain any "glosses," notes in the margin which clarify word use or other language issues. It does not contain any footnotes at all. So there is nothing which you can use for cross-referencing among the plays, this is particularly important when studying Shakespeare's "histories," as they are all related until one continuous story when put together. This edition of the complete works also does not contain any kind of a general introduction about the person of William Shakespeare, his life or historical times. This edition does not contain an introduction to any of the plays.Honestly, this is the first addition of "The Complete Works" that I have ever seen that does not contain all of these things. Some editions I have seen in the past, have better glosses, footnotes and intros that others but they have all had them.I wanted this edition because it was divided into the four logical volumes, comedies, tragedies, histories, & romances & poems, and I wouldn't have to carry around one huge book. However, to charge very nearly 50 dollars, for edition of the complete works of William Shakespeare, that doesn't have margin notes, footnotes and contextual introductions, is a complete release the money. Even if you don't intend to use this to study Shakespearean school, and even if you think you are very familiar with Shakespeare's work, margin glosses footnotes and other contextual information is still very important to remind yourself of salient points of information. You would be better off buying one of the older paperback editions edited by Prof. David Bevington for example of the University of Chicago. There is a six volume and four volume set of the works available. In those all contain the same study aids, I have described above, better in his comprehensive one volume edition of Shakespeare. There also fine editions by the Royal Shakespeare Company available, and Pelican books. Again buyer beware don't waste your cash

I purchased the Kindle version of this book. I bought this particular version of the Complete Works because it comes with free audio, which is excellent to have handy when reading Shakespeare. However, the Table of Contents only exists for the first part of the book--the tragedies. To read a particular play that's a comedy or history (or any of the sonnets)--in other words, 75% of the book--you have to click onto the last "chapter" listed--Titus Andronicus--and page through to find the work you're looking for. What a HUGE pain! If you're buying this on Kindle, might want to find a better version, unless you plan to simply read the book cover to cover every time.

I am a huge Shakespeare fan! HUGE!! I remember toting the "Portable Shakespeare" literature book around with me wherever i went. In 2014, after looking at my dog-eared version of limited collections - i decided to buy the ULTIMATE collection for a mere $1.99.It was wonderful! I was happier than a twister in a trailer park! Whenever there was down-time at my facility, and everyone sat there exchanging bean dip recipes, while talking about dieting at the same time, i'd have my nose in my Kindle reading my favorite plays, exploring new ones as well as sonnets, etc.Fast forward 2016, it had been a few months since i read from my Ultimate collection. I went to the table of contents. And.. there wasn't any. I highlighted "Front Matter" hoping i would find it there? Nope. All that appeared was the beginning of the first comedy, "All's Well that end's well"..okay..I highlighted "Cover" where i could see the cover of the book and swipe right over to the table of contents. Guess what? There i was AGAIN - All's Well that ends well."Like other people have posted in the the one star reviews: It's like reading a data file. You have to go through every single play in order to find what you're looking for.I did the Kindle "video MayDay" asking if this was a problem, and could she help me resolve this issue? She pretended to look for the problem and disconnected us.I thought, okay.. Let's try this again. Guess what? The second "customer service" rep listened, then pretended to "look it up on amazon" herself.. right in the middle of it? She disconnected us.Apparently, this is a problem no one can solve. I tried deleting the book from the carousel, no problem. But you CANNOT delete it from the Cloud and start over. I've tried it. You cannot even remove this worthless file from the Cloud itself. It's stuck there.Thus, i'll have to find a new Shakespeare collection, with an ACTIVE table of contents.Do not waste your money of this.. I have no idea what happened? But Everlasting Flames Publishing Company better get off their Everlasting As** and fix this problem before they lose customers to other companies.Oh, just when i thought i would download other Kindle Editions of Shakespeare from other publishers? Guess What? Many of the Kindle users are having the same problem.Also, if you see a 5 star review regarding the Ultimate Collection? Check very closely. These reviews are mixed in with those who have bought the "HARD COVER EDITION" which seem to be the ones getting the 5 stars.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION! The Kindle edition does not even have a Table of Contents. You want to read Romeo and Juliet - good luck in even finding it. The hard-copy version might be OK - I don't have a copy to check. But this kindle edition is a mess. If you want to read Shakespeare on Kindle, get "William Shakespeare: The Complete Works" based on the 1974 Riverside Edition published by Eireann Press. That is the one I bought after ordering this one and finding how awful it is.
